@rambo6267 So you're judging an entire race from the actions of a Movie character? Wow, thats worse than basing "facts" on Deadliest Warrior. Actually thats borderline retarded.
I'm American, and I agree that Deadliest warrior is a pretty dumb show... And all my "dumb ass" American friends and like 90% of all American "dumb asses" agree... That show is complete bull, I'm a Chamorro from Guam, and Americans are not dumb, there's dumb and smart people in every country. Trust me.
@rambo6267 Is all you can say? You are just as ignorant as that boy. And he's just a fictional character. Have you seen this movie? Do you even know what it means? "ONCE were warriors." It is a tragedy. And it is meant to send out a message to the Maori about what they once were and what many of them have become.
got to keep our culture going... I am in Australia and there are heeeeaps of maoris here, its a shame because some will lose their culture in years to come, others try to hold on to their culture but eventually as they integrate into society they let it slowly slip away. If New Zealand paid its workers well then alot of us would stay. Must say, it is good to see a kapahaka group over here though
@dressedgull The moari population of of New Zealand whether they acknowledge it or not is approximately 35%. My mother does not acknowledge her maori side as she was whipped for speaking maori when she started at school, she is pale enough she could pass as pakeha so she did so she could get work ans marry well. now all her children and grandchildren are fluent and proud of her, her parents and our people
@Borogoroeaesum the taiaha is actual a pretty crafty weapon it break bones with a single strike and it has spear head with a stone thats actually stronger than steel

@bradvswild Made in 1994. It's hard hitting inparticular with domestic violence. Remember not all of us Maori are nut cases but yes it does happen just like it does around the world. This movie won many awards in it's time and launched the Hollywood movie careers of Temuera Morrison (Jake) - Speed 2, Barb Wire, Star Wars etcc and Uncle Bule (Cliff Curtis) - Whale Rider, Training Day, Die Hard 4, Bringing out the dead, etc.. enjoy
@GuamKomudo - He is referring to the British Redcoats. And when you think about it, the combination of a deadly long-ranged weapon like the musket and a short spear-like bayonet would be quite a devastating weapon against a suited knight. One, a Redcoat wasn't bogged down by 20lbs of steel plate. Two, both a lead pellet fired at plate and a thrust from a bayonet would easily pierce armor.
It wouldn't "easily" pierce armor... And the reason people stopped using the legit close combat weapons like a battle axe or a sword, war hammer ect is because shooting people became more effective... Not because Bayonets were more effective than a trained knight. If you're a red coat, your hand to hand skill is not going to be even close to a Knights skill so you can rule that out...
@GuamKomudo - no ones debating who is the more skilled in hand to hand combat. The Knight wins that easily. But instead of asking "why did the knights stop using proper Hand to hand combat weapons like the sword", instead ask "why did British soldiers stop wearing armor altogether?". The answer is obvious. Shots penetrate armor, making heavy plate obsolete. And of course a thrust from a bayonet will easily penetrate. European knights were doing the same thing when they invented halfswording.
The bayonet is NOT the most effective hand to hand combat weapon the British ever knew... ESPECIALLY not compared to the the Maori, wooden made Taiaha >.>
@GuamKomudo ever seen crooked earth? there they use a pounamu patu, cut a mans head open. Just because Maori used wood doesnt mean it wasnt deadly. The taiaha could be used to deflect a blow and then to strike..one motion. And in the times where the British first came to new zealand it was. That's what he's talking about.
@deftking - Maori are proud to be Maori. They were Maori before New Zealand was ever called "New Zealand". Why would they call themselves New Zealander? Pakeha, on the other hand, is the term given to white settlers by the Maori. Everyone else is a New Zealander.

they had wars way before WW1 with the bitish called the musket wars about 100 years before WW1 thye built big fortrestest and they had huge walls around them
@Hoob22 I think if we wanted a European melee weapon to compare with the reach and lethality of the taiaha, we could consider something like the pole axe. Mind you, that's from centuries prior. By the time the British and Maori clashed, the Brits were far more accustomed to the use or projectile weapons, whereas the Maori were still very well acquainted with close quarters combat. Oh, and as per the trench warfare bit, the Maori pa are likely what folk here are referring to.
Actually trench warfare was used extensively and very effictively by Maori against the British in the New Zealand Wars. The first accounts of a modern pa adapted with trenches, firing pits and bomb shelters go back to 1845 in New Zealand's Northern War. Nga Phui chief, Te Ruki Kawiti used these tactics to slaughter British attackers to very good effect at places like Ohaeawai and Ruapekapeka.
Many historians claim Maori first invented modern trech warefare because of this fact. I'm not sure if there are any accounts of it that predate the mid 1800s but it was certainly in use in New Zealand by that time.
By 'many historians', you mean James Belich and no-one else. The Lines of Torre Vedras were a system of trenches and redoubts that stretched for dozens of miles during the Peninsular War.
Maori were well accustomed to firearms by the 1820s and 1830s and were well in use by all tribes by the time the major clashes flared up between the British in the 1840s. Most warriors still carried close combat weapons of course such as patu and tomahawks but the taiaha became a bit out of date because with a musket, there was no logic in carrying two douple handed weapons.
I thought that the tongue end of a taiaha was a carved piece of stone set into the end of the weapon. Am I wrong, or is that a variation of the weeapon?
A real taiaha is all wood. I've never seen a one with a greenstone tongue. There are faux 'maori weapons' made for the tourist market, usually made in china, and they usually have fake stuff added to them to make them seem authentic. This is probably what you have seen. The wierd thing is they often cost as much or more than a real taiaha. Greenstone is usually only utilized for the short clubs called Patu, and even these are just for ceremonial, not combat use.
What the guy said about the English and the bayonnet was bs bro. Learn some history on our weapons and you'll change your mind. That Taiaha is really cool though for real.
the strange thing is I got chills or goos ebumps whe too whe he starts swinging the taiaha and im from ireland
have been to New Zealand twice and have so much respect for the people and history, I learned so much by chatting to kiwis maori and pakea. such a precious culture that should be preserved and handed to down parents to kids!!
Cheers and ill be back to new zealand some time in my life yet...
As a former Kiwi living in Canada I loved the movie but found it very disturbing.I saw a very close similarity between the Maori and our natives, the level of violence.I am not sure how close to the truth the movie is.All the Maoris I ever met were great blokes, great singers, bloody good rugby players. One Maori lad Willy Apiata(excuse me if spelling is wrong)won the VC in Afghanistan with NZSAS.check it out on You Tube under NZSAS.Maori or Pakeha you are all Kiwis.
No! Universal Healthcare is not on reservations. Tax dollars pay for what little health care there is but this is subject to what reservation you are on and what tribe you belong to.
European are obviously inferior to aboriginals. However, in north America, Europeans were able to exploit tribal rivalries in the divide and conquer tactic very effectively which gave them time to develop advanced automated military technology for mass genocide which made up for their low fertility rates and genetic inability to adapt.
Didn't mean for that to sound racists; better to say that COLONIALISTS are inferior. Colonialism refers to anyone regardless of race/nationality that exploits or displaces other people by force. China did it and continues in Tibet. It happens in Africa. Many Europeans that moved, mixed and contributed peacefully. During the last 400 years, colonial Europeans caused a lot of death and destruction. Genocide is still going in the reservation, ghetto and barrio; we have the power to stop it.
Ballsy statement but untrue. Just because my people live on reservations does not mean that they cannot survive. We are taking back this country in the way that Europeans cant fight off....CASH! Even my reservation in OK has a casino on it! Palefaces flock to them and get fleeced by thier own greed!
Surviving is different than prospering. Not sure which casino you are referring to, you must get a good per cap. Most of my friends from OK get tiny check from their tribes which mostly goes to their ex-wifes! ;)
Only my first cousin is the rich one. I do agree with you though, Surviving is not the same as prospering but its better than the outright genocide that most NA tribes have been through since 1621. But back to Maori...it just seems to me that the "taiaha " (the symbol of fighting spirit. Called "mana" in Maori, I think) needed to battle on the INSIDE is gone. I am beginning to wonder if those in NZ see it or am I just on the outside looking in? What do you think?
They have reservations in NZ? i am sorry but although i am fascinated by Maori culture since i saw Once were Warriors and Whale rider, yet i know little 'bout Polenesian culture. One thing i know is reading National Geographic 'bout how they made it to the Americas before anybody else did :) I think the movie 'bout the bird-run is supposed to be 'bout the first colony of Maoris in America (not sure if that was the title of that movie) Is got Jason Scott Lee as the start an another Maori actress
and i think thats good mabey just mabey theyll wise up to there odds i wont hold my breathe though and i just want to ask one thing someone told me native reservations have universal healthcare is that true?
The british were useless fighters and cowards who got their asses handed to them on many occasions. The only reason they won was purely because of fire power and numbers. The maori still won heaps of battles even when they were outnumbered 400 to 2000. when the brits fought us they expected a pack of dumb outnumbered cannibal idiots, but guess who ended up kicking who's ass.
Maybe that is why more Maori heads are in museums all over the Commonwealth? The fact is that while Maori are still warriors(at least to us here on the reservation), its just that you havent learned to fight battles WITHOUT taiaha. Only then will you drive the pishteah (pakiea as you call them) back to where they came from.
First of all its pakeha not pakiea, and secondly mau rakau isnt just abvout fighting with a taiaha its using all body segments saying that we couldnt fight without taiaha is stupid. We could easily kick the pakeha's asses taiaha or not once again they expected dumb ass cannibills and ended being defeated by a smarter enemy..
I did not say that Maoris couldnt fight without taiaha so dont get offended. It just seems that the taiaha on the INSIDE is gone. I think that this movie makes a strong point to this fact. Still, not being Maori, I can only assume from observation. Again, no offense.
To misjudge your opponent is a sure way to loose...Not defending the Brits or anything, but they were famous for facing Napoleon and the germans in WWI & II.Just so happens that you guys were badder-asses than they were. And yes technology tends to give you the upper-hand
Why the fuck do we all still fight about this Maori vs Whites Bullshit, Read the comments we got it on all sides racism.
I believe in my ancestors and what they did, so should every1. But right now we are all kiwis, of NewZealand and we should be proud to come from the most beautiful, free and Glorious Country there ever has been. Stop the fighting keep the peace. Ahakoa tana whakahē, i nohopuku a ia.
Why is everyone just talking about whites and how oppressive they are? A little history will show you that oppression can and has come from most ethnicities. Don't get me wrong, whites can be bad, but we are not the only ones.
Europeans are cowars using gunpowder and numbers against amrtial artistry and honor warriors, they have ruined the world, climebd to the top and shit on eevryone else when they sat at the top, then the Americans did it too, the crisis today will let someone else return the favor and one day it will be the Polynesian's turn
there's a superior minded white guy of my own race on this forum who's views get up my fuckin nose. bottom line is this : what are us whites doing dominating guys the world over who were just minding their own business?
your right. we should keep to ourselves and build our own armies and if someone attacks us we will fight back. but only if we are attacked. let the world take its own course and stay out of other countries. if they want sharia law then let them have it.
i agree with cruz8r.... that was very racist to judge maori as a whole like that... no im not maori but have maori friends.. and maybe there are some maori ppl that do that stuff but there are some white ppl who do that stuff too, same goes for latino or african-american, or native amrican, or asian. but u cant judge a single race as a whole
lol look the truth all young maori think they are from america and living in a getto and they all want to be thugs so they smoke crack and kill rob and rape anyone white !!! because whitye man made them smoke crack and not go to school and want to just beat everyone up for a 20c for the spacies aye bro. they have a great culture but they let themselves down with their racist attitudes towards anyone not dark skined they hate white people so hard just read the news in New Zealand and see
I give you the thumbs down on that comment. You're judging us as whole. I'm a maori myself and have a different outlook on life. Your comment is not one hundred percent accurate. It's not a good idea making comments like that. I have alot of different friends white or any colour. Facts over fictions!.
crash669 actually you have it wrong, British got the livin crap beat outa them, you need to read more, on British sides there many iwi who simpy wanted to other iwi. First war was embaressing, they tried lieing about it , and tryed claiming it wasn't a war, 2 very important battles were also written as standstills by new historians.
It's true the Maori were later subject to illness and even during the land wars,
But make no mistake, they got the arse wooped, and rightfuly so.
Hey EskrimaDork, I take it you obviously like your Filipino Martial Arts as well, if so here's a question is there any similarities between Eskrima and Mau rākau?
yo EskrrimaDork...shot for posting this vid aye...in my opinion, this movie was a real eye opener for a lot of diff cultures...be white black green or wat eva...if you aint seen it, go see it...dang.ill hook u up! u gotta see it!
This is one of my all-time favorite films, and I think it's horribly underrated.
It's one of the most powerful, most culturally significant, most human films I have ever seen. Rena Owen must be one of the most under-appreciated actresses in the world - I mean, where is she today?

Maori Trenches were built to move around the field AND house troops protecting them from projectiles.

SofaMan1000 1 year ago
Many historians claim Maori first invented modern trech warefare because of this fact. I'm not sure if there are any accounts of it that predate the mid 1800s but it was certainly in use in New Zealand by that time.
SofaMan1000 1 year ago
@SofaMan1000
By 'many historians', you mean James Belich and no-one else. The Lines of Torre Vedras were a system of trenches and redoubts that stretched for dozens of miles during the Peninsular War.
SD78 1 year ago
Maori were well accustomed to firearms by the 1820s and 1830s and were well in use by all tribes by the time the major clashes flared up between the British in the 1840s. Most warriors still carried close combat weapons of course such as patu and tomahawks but the taiaha became a bit out of date because with a musket, there was no logic in carrying two douple handed weapons.

I thought that the tongue end of a taiaha was a carved piece of stone set into the end of the weapon. Am I wrong, or is that a variation of the weeapon?
ChannelUmptyThree 2 years ago
A real taiaha is all wood. I've never seen a one with a greenstone tongue. There are faux 'maori weapons' made for the tourist market, usually made in china, and they usually have fake stuff added to them to make them seem authentic. This is probably what you have seen. The wierd thing is they often cost as much or more than a real taiaha. Greenstone is usually only utilized for the short clubs called Patu, and even these are just for ceremonial, not combat use.

However, in north America, Europeans were able to exploit tribal rivalries in the divide and conquer tactic very effectively which gave them time to develop advanced automated military technology for mass genocide which made up for their low fertility rates and genetic inability to adapt.
linuxguru1968 2 years ago
Genetic inability to adapt...
versus the Aboriginals...
A lotta balls in that statement... A lot of balls...
fatmarco 2 years ago
Didn't mean for that to sound racists; better to say that COLONIALISTS are inferior. Colonialism refers to anyone regardless of race/nationality that exploits or displaces other people by force. China did it and continues in Tibet. It happens in Africa. Many Europeans that moved, mixed and contributed peacefully. During the last 400 years, colonial Europeans caused a lot of death and destruction. Genocide is still going in the reservation, ghetto and barrio; we have the power to stop it.
linuxguru1968 2 years ago
Ballsy statement but untrue. Just because my people live on reservations does not mean that they cannot survive. We are taking back this country in the way that Europeans cant fight off....CASH! Even my reservation in OK has a casino on it! Palefaces flock to them and get fleeced by thier own greed!
RRydnew 2 years ago
Surviving is different than prospering. Not sure which casino you are referring to, you must get a good per cap. Most of my friends from OK get tiny check from their tribes which mostly goes to their ex-wifes! ;)
linuxguru1968 2 years ago
I have relations on 2 reservations. One on the Chactow res in OK and the other in CT. Thanks for asking.
RRydnew 2 years ago
Oh...a rich casino Indian..... LOL ;)
linuxguru1968 2 years ago
Only my first cousin is the rich one. I do agree with you though, Surviving is not the same as prospering but its better than the outright genocide that most NA tribes have been through since 1621. But back to Maori...it just seems to me that the "taiaha " (the symbol of fighting spirit. Called "mana" in Maori, I think) needed to battle on the INSIDE is gone. I am beginning to wonder if those in NZ see it or am I just on the outside looking in? What do you think?
RRydnew 2 years ago
They have reservations in NZ? i am sorry but although i am fascinated by Maori culture since i saw Once were Warriors and Whale rider, yet i know little 'bout Polenesian culture. One thing i know is reading National Geographic 'bout how they made it to the Americas before anybody else did :) I think the movie 'bout the bird-run is supposed to be 'bout the first colony of Maoris in America (not sure if that was the title of that movie) Is got Jason Scott Lee as the start an another Maori actress

and i think thats good mabey just mabey theyll wise up to there odds i wont hold my breathe though and i just want to ask one thing someone told me native reservations have universal healthcare is that true?
iknowimhotterthanu 2 years ago
The british were useless fighters and cowards who got their asses handed to them on many occasions. The only reason they won was purely because of fire power and numbers. The maori still won heaps of battles even when they were outnumbered 400 to 2000. when the brits fought us they expected a pack of dumb outnumbered cannibal idiots, but guess who ended up kicking who's ass.
Tawhguy 2 years ago
Maybe that is why more Maori heads are in museums all over the Commonwealth? The fact is that while Maori are still warriors(at least to us here on the reservation), its just that you havent learned to fight battles WITHOUT taiaha. Only then will you drive the pishteah (pakiea as you call them) back to where they came from.
RRydnew 2 years ago
First of all its pakeha not pakiea, and secondly mau rakau isnt just abvout fighting with a taiaha its using all body segments saying that we couldnt fight without taiaha is stupid. We could easily kick the pakeha's asses taiaha or not once again they expected dumb ass cannibills and ended being defeated by a smarter enemy..
Tawhguy 2 years ago 2
I did not say that Maoris couldnt fight without taiaha so dont get offended. It just seems that the taiaha on the INSIDE is gone. I think that this movie makes a strong point to this fact. Still, not being Maori, I can only assume from observation. Again, no offense.
RRydnew 2 years ago
To misjudge your opponent is a sure way to loose...Not defending the Brits or anything, but they were famous for facing Napoleon and the germans in WWI & II.Just so happens that you guys were badder-asses than they were. And yes technology tends to give you the upper-hand

Even today the history gets slightly more in favor over time , now it's up to stand still again.
DragonToes13 3 years ago
crash669 actually you have it wrong, British got the livin crap beat outa them, you need to read more, on British sides there many iwi who simpy wanted to other iwi. First war was embaressing, they tried lieing about it , and tryed claiming it wasn't a war, 2 very important battles were also written as standstills by new historians.
It's true the Maori were later subject to illness and even during the land wars,
But make no mistake, they got the arse wooped, and rightfuly so.
