! This reminds me alot of the "split or steal" show where if both of the two contestants chose to split, then they would both get half, but if one chose steal and the other split, then the one who chose steal would get everything. If both chose steal then they would get nothing.
Here the women would almost always use their puppy-eyed innocence and make the male contestant choose split while they stole.
ps: At the age of 19 you've probably always had a this dominant figure telling you what to do.
I used to think that the nazi excuses for what they did during the Holocaust were bullshit as they would always say they were just following orders. Now I think anyone would have done the same thing if they were told to by a superior.
We watch these leanbacks and learn so much from them. I suggest everyone here be leaders so we can stop stupidity (so-to-speak) amongst the people around us
In the Milgram experiments the women kept increasing the voltages of the "shocks", while the men stopped when they heard cries of the student's pain.
I think this could be caused by the fact that women tend to be more submissive, as in they listen and obey to authority and such. (Perhaps intimidation?)
and the men chose to stop possibly because men tend to be more aggressive, as in they will listen to authority, but to their own moral extent. (Perhaps no intimidation?)
Okay let me revise since I've not watched the full video
I believe that the people (the men and women) who kept increasing voltages did so because they were submissive and chose to obey their authority (Perhaps out of intimidation to authority)
while the people who chose to stop increasing the voltage did so because they were more aggressive and listened to authority, but to their own moral extent. (Perhaps they had no intimidation)
@DNaidoo95 If you notice the younger ones had less reaction to the pain they were giving... One girl laughed saying "did we kill him?" while another said "i didn't even think about it" Which is funny, cause I say that all the time to my mom. My guess is that a persons brain(frontal lobe specifically) isn't fully devolved until early 20's, the girl that laughed was 19... So maybe her judgment was compromised because of this, and it made her less sensitive to someones pain. IDK just a hypothesis.
@Mrdevinda the experiments show this is not limited to any one single generation. This is about the nature of the humans. Also, that includes YOUR generation as well.
I Am Really Disgusted At My Self After Seeing These Videos It Made Me Question My Self That Am I That Much Of A Idiot To Not Help A Person In Need Or Shock Some Stranger To Death Because Some Other Stranger Told Me That Its The Right Thing To Do!!! it was actually quite sad and in horror for me to witness from the milgram experience, was actual people, people our age...contributing to the infliction of pain without any decency of stopping and protesting...extraordinary human nature we took part in and made...

First time I ever really got into vsauce's stuff as in not watching his img vids casually. Vsauce is a great source of information... and the way he speaks and shares this stuff is so easy to just listen to and learn about and WOW!
@TheSwamo Uhm.. no. The original experiment had mostly middle aged people and the results are the same. Many of the middle aged people in this reproduction behaved the same way, so I'm not sure where you're basing that theory off of.
That last experiment is terrible.I cant believe that that one guy is the only one who had the mind to stop. That anyone would inflict life threatening pain on those people,i cant believe that.Especially the looks on some of their faces, they looked as if they were enjoying it! This whole leanback episode has tol me how the people of the world have no morals, and are too afraid to be themselves and do as they believe they should do.
the last video reminded me of the end of portal 2 co-op because i didnt know if i did the right thing by letting the humans get tested on...i felt bad and a little happy becase the game tell you that u have saved science.
the pscho-social experiments like the last two change according to the social values of given people... i'm sure the same experiments conducted in different countries will give different results.
the last test for example would work less effectively in a less developed country (more generally) where people don't have that respect and obedience to aythority, don't trust what might be going on vis a vis human rights in their coutry etc...
i'm assuming all of this because i come from one of these
@961kgb It wouldnt as instead of a scientist it would be a different authority figure. Also in more economically develpoed countrys the indvdual has more freedom and is more likly to rebel then in a less economically develpoed country.
This is probably the most amazing thing I've watched all year.. no, that's wrong; my whole life. It really opens up your eyes to how humans truly are, and it's quite amazing. This honestly makes me want to go on to study psychology in University. Thank you Michael.
what about gut feelings? the last experiment doesnt take into account the fact that humans can pick up on gut feelings / situations that arent as they seem... does the experiment consider this?
Can you imagine how Media is the massage! This goes a long way to explaining both fundamentalism and the young sheeple a poor education produce. Belief in Aliens, religion, prophecy and many of humanities major works, started in fear, around the campfire 150K years ago. Fight corpratocratic take over of our net. The only fight worthy of humans, and it will never fail, if the law refuse to shoot, is long term peaceful demonstrations.
that last experiment was bullshit. The 'professor' told them it wouldn't damage them in long term effects. Most people would feel fine about doint it it you were to tell them that. He should of played along and said it could potentially kill them. Oh, and this was in Britain, so maybe it would be different in the U.S. or some other country. We all know that they're assholes anyway lol
@Timmytard190 Your a total douche. That experiment has been repeated hundreds of times all around the world with different variables and the same results. All that comment did was further reinforce the rest of the world's view of what ignorant uneducated fucktards people like you are. (Notice how I didn't have to make obnoxious generalizations about your country to show what a prick you are).
@2TheFot Seriously dude dont even bother wasting time on that guy, he's just making controversy and anything you say will just rile him up even more. @Timmytard190 The thrid clips experment has been repeted all over the world with people from different countrys and it is always the same. HOW EVIL WAS THE B*TCH IN THE LAS EXPERIMENT !!!!!? the 19 year old student ? Stupid b*tch was smiling whilst inflicting pain on another human being ! talk about never to judge a book by its cover ! Im sorry but i go with my instinct and if i come across someone who appears to be suffering i would go to there aid at the end of the day that could be me lying there !
I don't understand how to watch some of your videos. What do I do with the text from the textbin.com link? Where is the Psychology Experiments videos?
You know, the last one kind of reminds of one of those horror movies where you have to kill other people to live, only the only motivation to "kill" people is that an authority figure told you to.
I have an incredibly hard time believing that could actually happen. Do people really not consider what they're doing for two seconds and realize that they're killing someone for a simple experiment in memory? How can they think the output of it can justify torturing and killing someone?
I've come across most of these experiments in psychology but was it still very interesting to see some visual aids and though I have seen the last 3 clips before, they still shocked me! :O I think I'll have to suggest this to my tutor to show to next year as an overview. Great playlist LEANBACK!
I'm don't know if this means anything, but I don't think I'd follow through with the experiments the way the subjects did. Maybe that's what all the subjects would've thought too...
wow, i think the subject of the electric shock experiment could also be "Ethics of Science" cos many volunteers thought they were doing the "right thing" since it was "science" they were serving
Each Lean-back is better then the last. And the first 1 was great. So I don't even know how to rate this 1. Totally awesome is the best I can come up with.
If I were in the final experiment, I would just put it right to the highest voltage and hold it down for a minute, knowing that it's a fake because it's illegal to strap someone in a chair and torture them with electricity.
there was one women at the end who seemed to gain pleasure from inducing shocks, she looked pretty satisfied when she did the 450v shock.im scared of regular people now
The last one scary ha ..... it was something i realized myself that people don't give much shit about each other and would just hurt you even just for fun. Every normal person is a villain
jesus christ, this shows how evil everybody are. In both the obidience to authority expiriment and the prison study u can see that as soon as you tell somebody that they can hurt others with no consequences they WILL do it. Only a small part of the people were actually humane but the others didnt give a shit. And waht about the Bystander Expiriment? I can get shot and lie on the ground dying and nobodys gonna give a shit cuz thet dont wanna stand out! this is a fucked up world!
The last one was good but I wouldn't agree to that... No reason to use pain as a measuring tool BUT if I was told that the person signing up knew the risk and what was going to be done I might be more willing to do it but never to a point of death or long term injury. The people in the test are average people under orders by someone who they think is smarter and wiser so he must know better so they just listen while the others listen to what they think is right. It's scary to think like this.
It didn't mention were the people actually told after that 450V is a lethal voltage? All these experiments really just show that conformity is part of human nature and that individualism can have severe consequences. I don't want to spoil too much for future leanbackers so I will stop here.
This shit is scary and awesome...that last one specifically...I got chills just thinking that people will blindly follow authority despite knowing that it was wrong. I guess it also follows the Asch experiment as well...
Great job Vsauce; no ads, the playlist works perfectly, it's a hell of an interesting topic and you save the most interesting vid until the very end. Keep it up! More people need to see this.
at the last one... if you put yourself in that pozition ... you would think that you would of done the right thing and end the experiment.. but to be honest ... you and me .. and most of us would of killed the man :D
! This reminds me alot of the "split or steal" show where if both of the two contestants chose to split, then they would both get half, but if one chose steal and the other split, then the one who chose steal would get everything. If both chose steal then they would get nothing.

wow, i think the subject of the electric shock experiment could also be "Ethics of Science" cos many volunteers thought they were doing the "right thing" since it was "science" they were serving

People are crazy! Do they not know that 450V shock is a 100% death? They said: "I can tell that it wasn't me responsible, they told me to"
It's a man's life for God's sake!

2/3 Of the final part was pretty damn scary.
That 19 year old girl had no doubts about inflicting the shock at all quite messed up.
and that red headed guy didnt seem to care at all about inflicting the shocks as well.

jesus christ, this shows how evil everybody are.

Was that a real actual Test or an reenactment?
I mean it wasnt rlly looking like an reenactment, but how a Biology student, a educated person doesnt know the milgrim experiment from school?
Atleast this should be shown to all students all over the world.

JacoblCanada 9 months ago in playlist Awesome Psychology! Vsauce Leanback #4
It didn't mention were the people actually told after that 450V is a lethal voltage? All these experiments really just show that conformity is part of human nature and that individualism can have severe consequences. I don't want to spoil too much for future leanbackers so I will stop here.

What I've learned.
1. go with your gut feeling
2. wear a fancy suit, people will help you quicker
3. don't be a sheep to the authority figure, make your own decission g'dammit
