i took mine to range and loaded 38wad cutter38 lead slugs,38 hollow point,357 fiochi round, the first two shots had no recoil and werent loud at all and shot straight, the 38 hollow points and 357 round got loud.the guys next to me shooting noticed it they were shooting 22, and nines,,,lol now for the grand finally i shot the bear loads and that frightned the old man shooting the 22...and also i had a dan wesson out there and with those bear loads its cracked the gun into two no more bear loads!
I am considering buying a 357 snub nose but im wondering what the recoil is like in comparasion to a glock 40. cal semi auto handgun? My glock treats me just fine but I am liking the snub nose style revolvers. I was originally going to get a 38. special but since this can fire both calibers im considering this. So what do you guys think should I get a 38. snub nose or go with the 357?
I like the idea of the .357, then loading it with any load you choose. 357 can really beat up your hands but its good to have that option. I've also loaded it with 38 and 38+P, easy to handle. after maarket grips can help with recoil. I think the .357 has more kick than a 40 cal, I own a Taurus 24/7 40, and it has less kick. .357 is better option, i now have SP101 ruger with a 3" barrel, its 5 shot, I would prefer a 6 shot, but tarus 617 was a 7 shot, it was nice but bulky.
@remsensor I owned a Taurus 617SS 7 shot .357 and I own a 3rd gen Glock 22, a 3rd gen Glock 27 and a 4th gen Glock 22. The .357 revolver will have more kick but it's not bad at all. If it were so bad they wouldn't sell these but they sell ALLOT of them !
I just bought one online about an hour ago. I can't wait to shoot it. Should have it in 3 days. I wander if you can put crismon laser grips on it? What do you think of this weapon? You think it would knock down an attacker with one shot?
Not single action at all. I shot this video late in the day of shooting. My hands were rubbed raw from the .357 snub nose. I had I think 180 grain Bear Load, so I took the easy way out and went single action. You can hear the power of each shot. I had a death grip on the revolver and you can see me anticipating, oh, a slight discomfert in my hands.
Definately was a fun gun, but only up close, it was heavy enough to help minimize recoil, but heavier loads did create discomfert in the hands sometimes bruising.
Hi I was wondering if the end of the chamber has a circular ring or crown or is it flush with the front of the gun? I noticed on mine its like machined off, missing that groove.......it looks awkward, just wondering if yours is like that. I contacted Budsgunshop and they said Taurus Brazil ships it to Taurus USA with it and then they machine the barrel end down. I find that explanation BS and Buds sold me a piece of crap.
i can't help you there. I haven't shot anyone wearing a bulletproof vest yet. When I do you will be the first to know. Sorry couldn't be of any more help.
I traded the 617 for ruger SP101 w/ 3" barrel, easier to aim and more accurate. definately .357, because you can put in lighter loads in them if neccesary.

lol, I thought it really funny. I did enjoy the 617, but I ended up trading it for Ruger SP101, .357 five shot with 3" barrel. It is sleaker and easier to aim. BUT the 617 could double as bitch slapper if I ran into fischerskidude, lol. Thanks for the back up.
That's cool. The SP101 you can't go wrong with. You could probably deal with fischerskidude with your hands. There is a lot less paperwork involved that way lol.

i thought id be ok with using .38s in my .357,but that's breaking the bank too,so i'm going to get a .22 snub similar to my .357,prabably a taurus .22
at least $15 for 50 .38s and $18 for 50 fiocci .357s,I can get 550 .22lrs at walmart for $14,my sister is getting a gun soon,a small auto, was thinkin of .22,but we both decided .25 is better, she is scared to shoot most guns but needs protection
Nice video. Gotta love the sound. A model 617 has been my EDC piece for a bit over a year now. It's a bit heavy, and the grip leaves something to be desired for longer shooting sessions, though. However, carrying with a belt holster solves the weight problem for me. Keep on shooting! ;)
Snub nose revolvers are just about the best ccw imo, not everyone can carry a massive ruger or whatever around on them, snub nose revolvers are small and get the job done.
Originally I bought the 617 because of the the 7 shots. Its a little bulky, but definately concealable. But, i'm still looking around for 3" barrel, possibly 5-6 shot, probably 5 shot, for the concealable factor. I've looked at The Ruger SP101 and the Taurus 605 3". I'm actually heading to Cross Road of the West gunshow, next week here in Vegas. Its great most people usually are looking for Auto's there, leaves the trusty revolvers for me.
Easy if you own a firearm, you can leave the show with it, show proof of current firearm registration, background check, and usually a handling fee for who ever processer you purchase total extra is $35-40. Or 2 or 3 day waiting if its your first time purchasing.Carpark?
I've got no intention of getting one seeing how I live in australia but I get the general impression that you could buy unregistered guns NQA (no questions asked) from dodgy sellers in the carpark out of their cars trunk.
Well I can say that is possible if you know the wrong or right people, depend on how you see it. But, gun laws very from state to state, in nevada its fairly easy as long as you have a clean criminal record, california where I use to live, has more restrictions. In nevada you can get a permit to carry concealed firearms, fairly easy, just need to take a short course and pay for permit. California its harder and magazines can only carry 10 rounds. What are gun laws like on the Underside?
For a 20 year old white guy going to college like me its pretty much impossible to be able to have a pistol as a ccw or own one for that matter. I own an unregistered .22 rifle that I inherited from my godfather.
I can go to a gun show, show my ID that I am a resident of the state, exchange cash and the deal is done. No receipt needed. I'm planning a yard sale to get rid of some guns. (I will have a receipt ready for it stating that the gun is not stolen and that there is no warranty) Private sale perfectly legal
Now in a gun show where the seller is a gun store, you must undergo a background check through the government. It takes about 5 minuts by phone, same as a store.
I live in michigan and they just changed it so that there is no wait, just $6 and a nics run,go buy the gun write down the seriel# yourself and take it to the PD,no gun inspection
I actually traded this snub nose for the Ruger Sp101 357 magnum with a 3 inch barrel, 5 shot, its alot more concealable, 2 less shots, but you only need 1.
Snub nose pistols are great for conceal carry and for back up. I don't know what barfguy is complaining about. These guns are great and life saving in the right hands.
Well, I don't remember what I shot that day, but believe me it was kicking. Look at my face and neck tense up, i was doing the same with my arms, you just can't see it. My hands were taken the punishment, I was trying to look as manly as possible.
Everyones info is appreciated. I'm still looking for a 3" revolver 5 or 6 shot. I enjoy the concealment of the snub, BUT when unloading it rapidly, I lose alot of accurracy, in comparison to a 4 or 5" revolver or pistol. I've seen the Taurus 605 3" and also th Ruger SP101. Any info is appreciated. Because I know the Snub is for up close and personal, but if he runs I'd like to hit him from 20 yards out, LOL.
if you decid to go with a Snub, personally I would stick with the .38 +P rounds, and avoid the .357 (too much recoil in a small package). While a snub is easy to use, maintain, and conceal, it requires a lot of practice and range time to become proficient with. so practice a lot, and with speed loaders. The SP101 is a great gun. Taurus also makes great guns. It's your choice, I don't think you can go wrong with either. My Taurus is extremely reliable, and never failed to fire, not once.
I bought a 605 that is awesome but extremely difficult to be accurate with .357 rounds. I keep it loaded with Remington Golden Saber 125grain .38 +P. Took alot of shooting to get accurate with it. I was looking at the 617 but decided to go with the 605 because I can put a Crimson Laser Grip on it.
The +p .38 special from a snub does about 900+ fps, hardly a barn burner. Even .357 loads onlt hit a little over 1200 from a short barrel. Snubbies in .357 sort of suck, they're just not that powerful.
I realized the limitations of the snubby from the get go and obtaining the best muzzle velocity wasn't what I was striving for. I bought it because its easy to conceal, more so than my subcompact XD40. If I wanted higher velocity I would carry my 1911 with .45+P. This is a last resort and I dont intend to draw till I'm within effective range which I realize is relatively short using a 2" barrel but I sure as hell dont want to be on the other end of this thing and say oh its only 900 fps.
You're the one who said "puny" not me! Try reading what I said! A 125 grain bullet at 1200 fps is plenty for defense whether it is fired from a .357 or a 9 mm.
Hey guys thanks for all the banter and knowledge pored in here, its appreciated. I'm still looking around for a 3" barrel revolver. 5 or 6 shot. What do you guys have in suggestions? I've seen the Taurus 605 3". and the ruger SP 101. Any comments or knowledge on either?
You must be a n00b, because I don't think you understand the logic what was said. You are comparing different types of guns with different types of ammo. apples vs oranges? Every load is going to be less efficient as the barrel get shorter. you trade velocity for conceal ability. while I won't use a.357 round for self defense in a Snub, I can't deny the power that round has, even in a short barrel. The .357 has proved itself to be a man stopper.
I very rarely carry 357 in my snubby, I carry the 158 grain 38 +p FBI load SWCHP. these are the best manstopper in 38 special. I cannot control the 357 in the snub. but its nice to know that I can carry them in such a small package.
Steve, you made an excellent choice in ammo with the 38 +P 158gr LSWC-HP. Out of a 4-inch the destructive impact is surprisingly close to 125gr JHP .357's out of a 4-inch in my water penetration tests. The 158 reliably expands to 60+ caliber & Win and Rem both make 900 fps from a 4-inch and 800 fps from a 2-inch, with expansion at 50+ caliber. The lead HP is a VERY reliable performer with almost the same performance & less kick for quicker follow up shots than the 125 JHP 357! I carry it too!
I have always known that a 357 fried from a snub is reduced, but I still would not want to be on the receiving end of one. it still out guns a 38special + p
I have a taurus 357 snubnose......its a hand cannon. a 357 maganum, is a 357 magnum , no matter what size barrel it is fired from. it wll still blow a hole in someone, big enough to kill them.
1700 FPS from a .357 4" barrel is not a dream. You can achieve those velocity, with really hot loads, especially if you hand load. 1300 FPS or less from a 2.5 inch barrel is still at least 25% faster than a 9mm round fired from a gun of equivalent barrel length. Most 9mm rounds shot from a compact 9mm pistol is averaging 1000-1050 FPS. Plus you can shoot heavier rounds in the .357 caliber. BTW, most 9mm compact pistols can't handle +P rounds.
jahfakin, you are absolutely correct about 1700 FPS speeds from a 4" 357 Mag revolver with 125 gr bullets. Easily achievable with H4227 without pressures getting too extreme. I WOULD NOT shoot such hot loads thru a K-frame S&W, however. Use only L-frames or larger! The Ruger Blackhawk SA with its massively strong cylinder and frame is a great test vehicle for heavy .357 Mag loads!!
Well, I may not be the inform on velocity of rounds, but one thing is for sure, No Power or velocity of a round compares to the well placement of a round. That more the reason for me looking to get something concealable with a 3" barrel. More accurate than a snub and still concealable.
you are wrong...a 9mm round is not comparable to a .357, when shot from the same barrel length. They both are approximately the same diameter, but the .357 is a more powerful round. For example, Federal's HYDRA-SHOK:
9MM 135 grains = 1060
.357 130 grains = 1410
Even when comparing the Buffalo Bore factory loads, the +P+ 9MM, 115 grain Speer Gold Dot travels 1400 FPS. But the .357 Magnum 125 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point will do 1700 fps.
I don't know about the 9mm, but the .357 snub is hard to handle with the heavy loads. I thinking of exchanging to a .357 5 or 6 shot with a 3" barrel. For accuracy and distribution of the power.
iv got one just like that and iv got a colt python i live in britain nd if i get caught with them i will get 5 years in jail lol because of the stupid handgun ban :( oh well its worth the risk and almost every1 has 1 anyway nd i got mines when i was 15 haha
i took mine to range and loaded 38wad cutter38 lead slugs,38 hollow point,357 fiochi round, the first two shots had no recoil and werent loud at all and shot straight, the 38 hollow points and 357 round got loud.the guys next to me shooting noticed it they were shooting 22, and nines,,,lol now for the grand finally i shot the bear loads and that frightned the old man shooting the 22...and also i had a dan wesson out there and with those bear loads its cracked the gun into two no more bear loads!

Taurus also makes great guns. It's your choice, I don't think you can go wrong with either. My Taurus is extremely reliable, and never failed to fire, not once.

Does the 617 really have a ported barrel?
tsakherkuum 3 years ago
I bought a 605 that is awesome but extremely difficult to be accurate with .357 rounds. I keep it loaded with Remington Golden Saber 125grain .38 +P. Took alot of shooting to get accurate with it. I was looking at the 617 but decided to go with the 605 because I can put a Crimson Laser Grip on it.

The +p .38 special from a snub does about 900+ fps, hardly a barn burner. Even .357 loads onlt hit a little over 1200 from a short barrel. Snubbies in .357 sort of suck, they're just not that powerful.
barflewk 3 years ago
I realized the limitations of the snubby from the get go and obtaining the best muzzle velocity wasn't what I was striving for. I bought it because its easy to conceal, more so than my subcompact XD40. If I wanted higher velocity I would carry my 1911 with .45+P. This is a last resort and I dont intend to draw till I'm within effective range which I realize is relatively short using a 2" barrel but I sure as hell dont want to be on the other end of this thing and say oh its only 900 fps.

A 125 grain bullet at 1200 fps is about 400 foot pounds of energy. That's plenty for defense in just about any experts book!
gvaldeg1 3 years ago
Then why are so many critical of the "puny" 9mm, which gives exactly the same performance, 125 grain bullet at 1200 fps?
barflewk 3 years ago
You're the one who said "puny" not me! Try reading what I said! A 125 grain bullet at 1200 fps is plenty for defense whether it is fired from a .357 or a 9 mm.
gvaldeg1 3 years ago
yes, and say oh I said it was 900 fps why repeat it

The .357 has proved itself to be a man stopper.
jahfakin 3 years ago

I carry it too!

cool, I have done a lot research on this round, it is balls to the wall!!! thanks for the info.
stevo642007 3 years ago
I have always known that a 357 fried from a snub is reduced, but I still would not want to be on the receiving end of one. it still out guns a 38special + p
stevo642007 3 years ago
I have a taurus 357 snubnose......its a hand cannon. a 357 maganum, is a 357 magnum , no matter what size barrel it is fired from. it wll still blow a hole in someone, big enough to kill them.
stevo642007 3 years ago
1700 FPS from a .357 4" barrel is not a dream. You can achieve those velocity, with really hot loads, especially if you hand load. 1300 FPS or less from a 2.5 inch barrel is still at least 25% faster than a 9mm round fired from a gun of equivalent barrel length. Most 9mm rounds shot from a compact 9mm pistol is averaging 1000-1050 FPS. Plus you can shoot heavier rounds in the .357 caliber. BTW, most 9mm compact pistols can't handle +P rounds.
jahfakin 4 years ago
jahfakin, you are absolutely correct about 1700 FPS speeds from a 4" 357 Mag revolver with 125 gr bullets. Easily achievable with H4227 without pressures getting too extreme. I WOULD NOT shoot such hot loads thru a K-frame S&W, however. Use only L-frames or larger! The Ruger Blackhawk SA with its massively strong cylinder and frame is a great test vehicle for heavy .357 Mag loads!!
glnelson1956 3 years ago
Tell you what, yall both make some decent points about velocity.
BUT!!
Remember factory velocities are ALWAYS collected from a standard pressure test barrel, usually a 6" barrel for handgun rounds.
I shoot a Ruger P89 daily, I own 2 glocks as well, a mod-37 (45GAP) and a Mod-19.
The Ruger fits me better and I love the DA/SA action choice (I have huge hands).
My best load is Magtech 115gr JHP+P , I've no doubt it exceeds 1400 FPS Plus I have 16 in the gun and 2 back up mags.
The 9mm rocks.

Well, I may not be the inform on velocity of rounds, but one thing is for sure, No Power or velocity of a round compares to the well placement of a round. That more the reason for me looking to get something concealable with a 3" barrel. More accurate than a snub and still concealable.
pez517 4 years ago
you are wrong...a 9mm round is not comparable to a .357, when shot from the same barrel length.
But the .357 Magnum 125 Grain Jacketed Hollow Point will do 1700 fps.
jahfakin 4 years ago
I don't know about the 9mm, but the .357 snub is hard to handle with the heavy loads. I thinking of exchanging to a .357 5 or 6 shot with a 3" barrel. For accuracy and distribution of the power.

iv got one just like that and iv got a colt python i live in britain nd if i get caught with them i will get 5 years in jail lol because of the stupid handgun ban :( oh well its worth the risk and almost every1 has 1 anyway nd i got mines when i was 15 haha
