I think they should have cut Ruthie out of the show after she went to Scotland or even better, not have an 11th season at all!

I think the whole Ruthie/Martin relationship is a little more complicated than that. Yes, she did have a crush on him for a while, but she was also like 13 and 14. And even when she was older than that, he had a girlfriend. However, I really don't think that Ruthie was the rebound; other girls were the "rebound" in a way, especially when she got to be around 15 and 16 because he didn't want to admit to himself that he liked her because he thought of her as a sister for the longest time.

At 16, she wanted to date older guys to get Martin to be interested in her which failed.

It's hard when someone you like is 2 or more years older than you and just thinks of you as a little sister-like friend.

Here's something strange about the "little sister" aspect, Mac (Martin's best friend) thought of her as a little sister but then when she started dating Vincent, he liked her more than just a sister.

It just took him a while to realize that he loved her back. I still don't blame him though. I don't think he fully grasped Ruthie's love for him until Sandy had her baby and then left. Then, it was too late because she was with T-Bone. I think Martin and Ruthie's love meant more though.
