Modeling 3d mountains before create 2d layers is good idea for obtain a good camera mapping.

The default renderer of c4d does an amazing work with GI, dof and more more...

Anyway after 3d work you have to use some post production software to CC and more...

Try adding some DOF through glass or alphas through transparency. C4d render is ok but has MANY faults.
