The lesson of Joseph Merrick's life is that human beings, while being capable of horrible, disgusting things, is ultimately capable of good. We are so focused on the putridity of the other characters that we forget the sweetness we see in Mister Merrick, Treves, Miss Kendal, and, eventually, the staff of the hospital.

Marick is proof of human decency and hope. the will it takes to get you through all those years... his forgiving, understanding heart and longing for an existence among society. he is proof of God's existence. he was put on this earth to give hope to all who came after him. i love john hurt's portrayal of him.
