i like how two weeks ago they said the michigan v notre dame game was the first night game to be played in the big house..... well what did i just see?
No late afternoon game that went into the night. This was in fall so got dark early(obviously). ESPN/ABC brings in their own temporary lights so those are what you are seeing.
I remember my sister and I seeing the touchdown and then running into the other room, practically in tears, where it was on a delay (because of Tivo) and we got to watch it again. Almost made up for the fact that we were supposed to be at the game and ended up not being able to go
people say this kept penn state from the nation championship because it was their only loss of the season. yea right! there was no way they would have been ranked above USC or Texas that year
@kkende112233 I agree with you, had Penn State finished the regular season undefeated alongside USC & Texas, I doubt that they would have moved above either school. However, at this point in the season, who knew what was going to happen? A win would have left Penn State in a much better position just in case... this loss put paid to any hopes that they might have had.
Ah.. I remember this like yesterday. I was only 10, and I was scared shitless to even watch the play. Right before the ball was snapped, I quick looked up at the tv, and all I remember was hearing "TOUCHDOWN MANNINGHAM MICHIGAN WINS." Then getting thrown into the air by dad good times.
i hate this moment....watched this in a jail cell upstate and couldnt believe an undefeated season went down the drain...we would have been in the title game if this didnt happen...prolly would have won it all.
@pbowers06 Well i caught a charge in 2003 and was upstate in 2005 about to get out when this happen..i was watching t.v. in my cell because you can buy t.v.'s upstate..and i wanted to smash the screen when this happen..i was literally hurt...like in my heart i mean it...Then again in 2008 we were almost there until we lost that dumb ass game to Iowa when we had Darryl Clark...and they had Joe Stanzi or whatever..but i was pissed!!!!! Michael Robinson could have won it in 05' for real!!!
@SB20Champions Well that's funny because I'm a penn state fan and was too watching this game in a hotel room, but wasnt exactly jumping on the bed in joy. I was so pissed and heartbroken. I think I was 11.
Considering how this cleared up a potential BCS controverys and paved the way for the epic Texas-USC Rose Bowl, I still insist to this day that Mario Manningham should get a fruit basket every year from the BCS.
this kinda thing only happens in dreams i mean, 1 second left in the 4th, your losing, its 4th down, you pass it to the endzone and win, it doesnt happen everyday, this game was awesome
i remember pacing around my penn state man cave after watching this and dropping the F bomb repeatedly...i think this game legit gave me a stomach ache
Hey, Michigan can't ruin Ohio State's undefeated season in 2002 with 1 second left but they can to Penn State in 05 with one second left! CFB is great!
mario had to leave to go to the pro's if he stayed another year he would of dropped out and would of never got the ball cause look what happened the year he left...it was better off for him to leave just like how mallet left cause it doesnt go with rod system so it was smart of him just like arrington left also
Honestly, even if Penn State won this game, do you guys think they would have been chosen over either USC or Texas to play in the Rose Bowl? I sure don't
@forman208 Sadly, you may be right, but I think PSU had a good chance against Texas and USC that year. The 2005 team improved from an "ugly" win on opening day 23-13 over a decent USF team to a 35-14 drubbing of Wisconsin to take control of the Big Ten race.
Wait wait, so what is going on here exactly? Someone explain it to me. I see people running in the middle where there is grassy areas, but everyone is screaming...what is happening?
did you not see the scoreboard?? Michigan was trailng Penn St by 4 points with 1 second left in the game. Michigan scores a touchdown to win. Obviously, such a dramastic-last-second-come-from-behind win would be un believably exciting to the Wolverines and their home crowd.
i was fucking at that game i was going up the stairs and i looked down and i was like holy shit. it was probably the best michigan i have ever been to
I was at this game in the student section. I had season tickets for all the home games in 2005, and this one was by far the best game that year. I remember going to leave, everyone going "IT'S GREAT! TO BE! A MICHIGAN WOLVERINE!" and some dude was crying his f'ing eyes out, almost to the point where he couldn't breathe. Those...were great times.
I was on the turf just outside of the endzone with the ROTC color guard...Manningham caught it ten yards away from us. It was the only time I have ever seen a Marine Corps gunnery sergeant jump for joy!
Yes, Pitt beat Iowa. So did Michigan State. But that didn't stop Penn State from building up a 42-7 lead over the Spartans before putting in the second and third stringers. It was 49-7 before we subbed in the waterboy, cheerleaders, and camera crew. Common opponents sometimes are a good indicator of how good a team will do against another, but usually not in cases of upsets.
We are over the actual game, just not the defense of this game as "fair". This and the 2002 game are tainted. I know what you're probably thinking, if someone doesn't want to lose on a bad call, they shouldn't put themselves in a position to do so. That doesn't work, trust me, we've tried telling that to Nebraska fans since 1982 and they still don't wanna hear it.
I've put this game behind me long ago, I know I can't fix the mistakes of the past. The only thing I won't get over is the defense of this game as being reffed fairly. Even when you can't change the past, you should admit that a mistake has been made when one has been.
And my life is just fine. It's yours that's of questionable quality.
But it won't matter when this year on October 18, Penn State runs roughshod over Michigan, winning by three touchdowns. Damn, that's gonna feel good.
psu fans will never get over the 1 second thing even though the time was legitimately placed back on the clock by the OFFICIALS btw. You whiney psu fans make it sound like carr secretly went to the pressbox and added time on the clock... please... A timeout was called and they accidentally ran too many seconds off the clock. Everyone noticed, especially a heads up coach in lloyd carr so he argued and the officials had the time put back on. Wake up, stop whining, and accept the loss.
The timeout is called when the ref notices it, NOT when it's "meant" to be called. Also, don't forget Jason Avant's out of bounds catch. If it would have been a legitimate, untainted loss that wasn't riddled with bad calls, that'd be one thing, but this game was FULL of bad calls. It doesn't make us a bunch of whiny tin-foil-hat conspiracy theorists because we don't like shafted. It is, however, annoying that Michigan fans dismiss the idea that a bad call EVER goes in your favor.
Thank goodness Michigan "cheated" and won allowing Texas to beat USC in one of the most exciting Rose Bowls ever. It took Penn State 3 OT's to beat 24th ranked FSU in the Orange Bowl. The Trojans would have torched Penn State had they played so enjoy your #3 ranking and the memorable bowl win.
Do you really believe that? Penn State had two key injuries early on, and made a critical mistake at the end that would have put the game away and STILL won. Without Tony Hunt and Paul Puzlusney's injuries, it would have been a laugher, possibly 31-13 PSU. The Trojans and Longhorns both would have had their hands full against the Nittany Lions. Remember also that Penn State wiped Ohio State, who Texas barely beat. Penn State could have played both teams close and likely even won.
Dude, what the fuck are you talking about??? Pozluzny got hurt really late in the game, but you're right, Hunt got hurt on the first series and really damaged our offense. But if you think that Penn State could have beat USC or Texas than you're either the biggest fan-boy ever or a retard!
And Penn State did not wipe Ohio State it was 17-10 and a fierce defensive struggle played at home for PSU.
I thought I remembered Poz getting hurt early. My mistake. But still, Florida State was like the 2005 version of last year's Iowa, started off bad but got onto a hot streak, including an upset of Virginia Tech. And I do think Penn State that year could have beat USC or Texas. I'm not saying it would have been a guarantee but it could have happened. Look at common opponents (OSU did similarly against Texas). I saw the OSU game as Joe going into a shell after going up 17-10 but that was my take.
I think Florida State was a good team. They definately had a great defense.
Penn State could have stayed close with either of those teams -- maybe on their best day they could even upset them. But both those teams were also capable of possibly blowing out PSU.
I think PSU was better than Ohio State, but not by much. And that game was close -- and it was decided by the defenses and the home-field advantage, and that's why Penn State won.
I thought it looked different after PSU went up 17-10, but if you thought otherwise, I won't argue that point with you. It definately did feel tense and was a great game. I think PSU vs USC would have been a question of who had the ball last and PSU vs Texas would have been a classic. Remember that PSU pulled back the throttle as soon as they got a big lead (especially against Illinois, could have been 112-3 or worse), so they didn't look as good as they were. But I agree, FSU was underrated.
how did michigan cheat...no really honestly like im not trying to prove a point or nothin its just the first time i herd that they cheated durin that game
It is believed by a lot of Penn State fans, among others, thought that the game was over before this happened, and the refs didn't run the clock right, giving Michigan 1 last second.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It happened because Lloyd Carr had the B10 refs in his pocket for quite some time, especially against PSU. This game and the blatant screw job in 2002 where Tony Johnson has two feet in bounds on a 4th down catch that would've extended the drive, but the refs called him out. It will be interesting to see if Dick Rod can win over refs the way Carr did. Lets hope not. I love seeing scUM lose.
Uh, no. UofM didn't "get the second back". I not only was at the game, I watched it on video after the fact. Again, please review the game, UofM should never have lost the second to begin with. P.S. Get over another loss to Michigan
I remember being so pessimistic about this play. I was resigned to Michigan losing as that had been their luck all season. When the play ended I just sat there for a second going 'he CAUGHT it...' and thinking that somehow the game couldn't be over. Michigan had won. Then I came to my senses and went fucking nuts. :D
It's not the same thing. You lost to the team that Penn State blew out (Wisconsin), but anyone knows that all teams match up differently and make mistakes that can change the momentum. Penn State's biggest mistake was starting Austin Scott, and Michigan has always been a good team at exploiting mistakes.
I don't mean to make exuses but if you though this was great the Boise State play was alot better. And we beat the Buckeyes for the seasons greatest upset in 2005
To take nothing away from PSU's win over OSU (which was spectacular to see), Michigan's win over PSU was more significant. That was the worst Michigan team in 20 years beating a top-10 team on the last play to save a .500 record, and more importantly, it saved the BCS from being a complete disaster with three undefeated teams. And in terms of the "season's greatest upset," any rational college football fan would choose Texas over USC in the Rose Bowl.
If Michigan would have lost to Penn State, they'd have still gone 6-5 regular season, and gone to the Motor City Bowl, which would have probably been won, and finished 7-5 anyway. Anyway, one loss or not, I still think Penn State could have beaten USC or Texas. USC was only #1 all year because they won the 2003 and 2004 national championships, and Texas was also a little overrated. I say to that, why not? We've had one loss national champion. PSU would have beaten USC by two touchdowns.
So? If my ass could have shit rainbows, I'd have flown to work this morning.
Why all the baseless conjecture about PSU? They didn't play USC or UT because they lost to Michigan. Also, there is absolutely no basis for the statement that "Texas was overrated" other than PSU kool-aid consumption. But that's neither here nor there.
What you just provided is another example of what's wrong with the BCS system. I'm not advocating a playoff system, but something should be done. Penn State by the end of the year would have been unstoppable. Did you see the way they blew out Illinois? It wasn't even nearly that close. But I've learned to expect poll voters keeping PSU out of the #1 spot. It started in 1969 when the president declared Texas national champions without a game being played.
Lol at #15 on Michigan @ 0:07

Was this the yr PSU was upset by a 5 loss Michigan team? Or was it another year.
cameroncrazie818 3 years ago
We are over the actual game, just not the defense of this game as "fair". This and the 2002 game are tainted. I know what you're probably thinking, if someone doesn't want to lose on a bad call, they shouldn't put themselves in a position to do so. That doesn't work, trust me, we've tried telling that to Nebraska fans since 1982 and they still don't wanna hear it.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
I've put this game behind me long ago, I know I can't fix the mistakes of the past. The only thing I won't get over is the defense of this game as being reffed fairly. Even when you can't change the past, you should admit that a mistake has been made when one has been.
And my life is just fine. It's yours that's of questionable quality.
But it won't matter when this year on October 18, Penn State runs roughshod over Michigan, winning by three touchdowns. Damn, that's gonna feel good.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
psu fans will never get over the 1 second thing even though the time was legitimately placed back on the clock by the OFFICIALS btw. You whiney psu fans make it sound like carr secretly went to the pressbox and added time on the clock... please... A timeout was called and they accidentally ran too many seconds off the clock. Everyone noticed, especially a heads up coach in lloyd carr so he argued and the officials had the time put back on. Wake up, stop whining, and accept the loss.
skreez 3 years ago
The timeout is called when the ref notices it, NOT when it's "meant" to be called. Also, don't forget Jason Avant's out of bounds catch. If it would have been a legitimate, untainted loss that wasn't riddled with bad calls, that'd be one thing, but this game was FULL of bad calls. It doesn't make us a bunch of whiny tin-foil-hat conspiracy theorists because we don't like shafted. It is, however, annoying that Michigan fans dismiss the idea that a bad call EVER goes in your favor.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
Thank goodness Michigan "cheated" and won allowing Texas to beat USC in one of the most exciting Rose Bowls ever. It took Penn State 3 OT's to beat 24th ranked FSU in the Orange Bowl. The Trojans would have torched Penn State had they played so enjoy your #3 ranking and the memorable bowl win.
Razorshines94 3 years ago
Do you really believe that? Penn State had two key injuries early on, and made a critical mistake at the end that would have put the game away and STILL won. Without Tony Hunt and Paul Puzlusney's injuries, it would have been a laugher, possibly 31-13 PSU. The Trojans and Longhorns both would have had their hands full against the Nittany Lions. Remember also that Penn State wiped Ohio State, who Texas barely beat. Penn State could have played both teams close and likely even won.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
Dude, what the fuck are you talking about??? Pozluzny got hurt really late in the game, but you're right, Hunt got hurt on the first series and really damaged our offense. But if you think that Penn State could have beat USC or Texas than you're either the biggest fan-boy ever or a retard!
And Penn State did not wipe Ohio State it was 17-10 and a fierce defensive struggle played at home for PSU.
larma7 2 years ago
I thought I remembered Poz getting hurt early. My mistake. But still, Florida State was like the 2005 version of last year's Iowa, started off bad but got onto a hot streak, including an upset of Virginia Tech. And I do think Penn State that year could have beat USC or Texas. I'm not saying it would have been a guarantee but it could have happened. Look at common opponents (OSU did similarly against Texas). I saw the OSU game as Joe going into a shell after going up 17-10 but that was my take.
MVillani1985 2 years ago
I think Florida State was a good team. They definately had a great defense.
Penn State could have stayed close with either of those teams -- maybe on their best day they could even upset them. But both those teams were also capable of possibly blowing out PSU.
I think PSU was better than Ohio State, but not by much. And that game was close -- and it was decided by the defenses and the home-field advantage, and that's why Penn State won.
larma7 2 years ago 2
I thought it looked different after PSU went up 17-10, but if you thought otherwise, I won't argue that point with you. It definately did feel tense and was a great game. I think PSU vs USC would have been a question of who had the ball last and PSU vs Texas would have been a classic. Remember that PSU pulled back the throttle as soon as they got a big lead (especially against Illinois, could have been 112-3 or worse), so they didn't look as good as they were. But I agree, FSU was underrated.

how did michigan cheat...no really honestly like im not trying to prove a point or nothin its just the first time i herd that they cheated durin that game
ddetroitTigers2008 3 years ago
It is believed by a lot of Penn State fans, among others, thought that the game was over before this happened, and the refs didn't run the clock right, giving Michigan 1 last second.
stokie510wego 2 years ago
No way! We've never heard all the butthurt Penn State fans whine about this year after year.
Bottom line was both coaches got time put back on, it was no conspiracy.

I love seeing scUM lose.

and besides u got ur bull shit second back on the clock from a bad call

Good times.

Me too. I was like, "Fuck, they're gonna lose" and then when Henne found Manningham, I turned the volume on my TV up full blast. It was awesome.

This was such a great game, I still can't believe the ending. I saw a shirt the following spring:

Cromulus420 4 years ago
It's not the same thing. You lost to the team that Penn State blew out (Wisconsin), but anyone knows that all teams match up differently and make mistakes that can change the momentum. Penn State's biggest mistake was starting Austin Scott, and Michigan has always been a good team at exploiting mistakes.
MVillani1985 4 years ago
I don't mean to make exuses but if you though this was great the Boise State play was alot better. And we beat the Buckeyes for the seasons greatest upset in 2005
Nittanylionfan14 4 years ago
No, beating you will always be better than a one year wonder team beating Oklahoma.
Cromulus420 4 years ago
To take nothing away from PSU's win over OSU (which was spectacular to see), Michigan's win over PSU was more significant. That was the worst Michigan team in 20 years beating a top-10 team on the last play to save a .500 record, and more importantly, it saved the BCS from being a complete disaster with three undefeated teams. And in terms of the "season's greatest upset," any rational college football fan would choose Texas over USC in the Rose Bowl.
But PSU beating OSU was awesome.
hemphrey 4 years ago
If Michigan would have lost to Penn State, they'd have still gone 6-5 regular season, and gone to the Motor City Bowl, which would have probably been won, and finished 7-5 anyway. Anyway, one loss or not, I still think Penn State could have beaten USC or Texas. USC was only #1 all year because they won the 2003 and 2004 national championships, and Texas was also a little overrated. I say to that, why not? We've had one loss national champion. PSU would have beaten USC by two touchdowns.
MVillani1985 3 years ago
But that's neither here nor there.
hemphrey 3 years ago
What you just provided is another example of what's wrong with the BCS system. I'm not advocating a playoff system, but something should be done. Penn State by the end of the year would have been unstoppable. Did you see the way they blew out Illinois? It wasn't even nearly that close. But I've learned to expect poll voters keeping PSU out of the #1 spot. It started in 1969 when the president declared Texas national champions without a game being played.
