This was so tragic I cried when I first saw it. To think of those people on that shuttle that should never have died. That teacher was so enthusiastic about her job and all of the others there. Truly awful.
it was rigged to blow up by the government... to stop and kill the dream of space travel for regular people.. so as to prevent us from knowing the truth about life from outter space...
This could have been prevented... just the night before the launch, concerns were expressed because of the weather freezing this seal that broke and caused this tragedy ...
The Shuttle is extremely dangerous and expensive. Solid rocket fuel is a bad idea with people are involved. There is no real escape system. The ironic thing is the falcon9 rocket by spaceX would by fare not only be the safest man rated rocket but one of the lowest cost rockets as well.
the launch sts 51-l was so often delayed, she wasnt sitting in the(cockpit she sited in the second floor its under the cockpit(well if the shuttle stands on its heatshield) so the O ring was frozen this day, causing that it didnt stretch like it was supposed to be during the high pressure of the burning solid fuel, and that causind it to vent hot gas into one of the connections to the fuel tank, causing it to smahs into the fuel and exploding itself ,
President Reagan asked for a teacher to be selected, and Crista was selected out of more than 10,000 applicants to represent the average American in space.
She was not a tourist, she didn't pay to be selected. She did not go to sight see. She was supposed to teach several science lessons to educate the average American about space.
@osallent If I'm not mistaken, NASA had "linked up" several classrooms across the nation (in a predecessor to "video teleconferencing") and were planning on having Ms. McAuliffe teach science lessons from space, right?
The fact that she was not an astronaut had nothing to do with the disaster. She was one of many applicants for a "Teacher in Space" program, and the runner-up actually became an astronaut and recently flew on a space mission. This was less about tourism and more about learning. I grew up close to her, and am close in age to her children. Watching this live on television will forever be seared into my memory.
how could you attend planetariums named after her while in school? your 28 and im sure she was older than that. so in order for you to visit said planetarium you would probably had to bee very young.
really informative and interesting

I'm not sure why that's unbelievable? In school we often took class trips to the planetarium named for her in the city where she lived and taught.
