It's strange how you don't really realise how much the characters have changed until you go back and watch the earlier episodes. Ted seems a lot different in the earlier ones.

Well... not ALL that different... he just was more human. More of a character and less of a caricature. Eventually his humanity was lost in favor of his traits, which were what made him funny. You know, they chose to make him his gag, which makes him funnier, but less deep in exchange. Its a valid choice. With Pros and Cons, of course.
