Maintanence of roads is socialized and paid for by "transportation tax" regardless of how much or little you use them. People who already have insurance still get to keep paying for it.

The key issue in your way of thinking is expecting your government offcials to keep promises they have made while running for office.
We have unions controlling fire/rescue services with inflated budgets, that nobody else can compete for to control costs. Same with school boards, police departments, all services. Either we pay their ransom, or they strike against taxpayers. Long live the unions.
You seem to think that i said government was perfect. It is not but is is the only solution.
Government will never keep every promise or do every task well. However when it comes to the most important matters i will take public sector over the private sector as i can at least attempt to get the boss fired.
Also i think i get a steal for what i pay for my services. Considering it would cost me 30k a year or so for a body guard i think $500-1k a year for the police is a good deal
But back to the point... The question is about health care and if the federal government should be more involved.
Well using the rest of the industrialized world as a reference i think we should embrace a more socialized system.
It is proven to bring down cost and certainly has not been proven to hurt the overall health of it citizens. If anything i say the evidence indicates it increases the quality and longevity of their lives.
Also let me end with what do you have against unions?
I think a union can be a great thing. I for one think the private sector works best when the employee and employer have equal bargaining power and unions help accomplish that.
In too many fields there are to few companies with too many people capable of doing the job. When this happens the wagers get lower and you have few people pumping money into the economy. This is bad for society as a whole and unions can keep this from happening.
I'll try to explain my worries about unions working for the government, not every union though.
I advice the local government when dealing with strong unions that work for the city. In my city Dade County; we overpay grossly for salary and services that comparable towns get for an average 38% less.
We can't have open competition for services. Part of the old union friendly contracts. Is that the future deal in a nationalized health care? No competition? Good enough?

However, the problem is not so much the union's pay as it has a the soul right to certain contracts. Whenever this happens, be it for a union of small company, it tends to work badly.
I don't blame that on unions specifically. Any big organization often does the same basic thing including corporations.
But back to the main point... I agree open competition is needed for unions to work the way they should.

It was better for me because I could go when I needed to without sacrificing a bill or two. It is a profitable industry, however, who determines how much your life is worth? Do you know what in-network and out-of-network means? Do you understand what deductible and OOP is? What exactly is a copay? How are these things calculated? Having a service covered at 100% by your insurance means (for that service) you have free health care....

On most policies, once your OOP is met, your health related services are free. If you use Medicaid for your children, you are using government subsidized health care. If the government pays for it, it doesn't change the quality. The same doctor who gets paid by the insurance company for you gets paid by the govt for medicare patients. They provide the same care. If not...

After discharge it was apparent to me the inferior health care I received compared to the private sector care, and am glad to pay for the privilege!

If you have private insurance, when was the last time you sat down with the insurance company and negotiated your "non-covered services" list? They have always decided was treatments you can get by with. Your doctor didn't sit down with them, either.

They want to let people purchase policies across state lines. Great! But, what do they do about those who still can't afford the policies? (I used to work for an insurance company. The individual policies are ridiculously expensive and they don't cover much.) They are more concerned about profits and competition of the companies.

I sent the letters out telling doctors to send in a refund because a service was no longer covered or was subject to pre-existing conditions. I listened to doctors complaining because someone at the insurance company determined that a particular treatment wasn't medically necessary even though the person would die without it.

I had the benefit of great employer health insurance, now that I am laid off I see the importance that millions of Americans and I need, a public option. The only fear the far right have is how this will positevly affect us, and how their days are numbered.

Maintanence of roads is socialized and paid for by "transportation tax" regardless of how much or little you use them. You pay an education tax even if you do not attend school or have kids attending (thats socialized). Police are paid for by your taxes even if you don't ever need them (sounds like socialism don't it). Even with the passing of this bill however, medical is still NOT socialized. People who already have insurance still get to keep paying for it.

We have unions controlling fire/rescue services with inflated budgets, that nobody else can compete for to control costs. Same with school boards, police departments, all services. Either we pay their ransom, or they strike against taxpayers. Long live the unions.

Government will never keep every promise or do every task well. However when it comes to the most important matters i will take public sector over the private sector as i can at least attempt to get the boss fired.
Also i think i get a steal for what i pay for my services. Considering it would cost me 30k a year or so for a body guard i think $500-1k a year for the police is a good deal

I think a union can be a great thing. I for one think the private sector works best when the employee and employer have equal bargaining power and unions help accomplish that.
In too many fields there are to few companies with too many people capable of doing the job. When this happens the wagers get lower and you have few people pumping money into the economy. This is bad for society as a whole and unions can keep this from happening.

I'll try to explain my worries about unions working for the government, not every union though.
I advice the local government when dealing with strong unions that work for the city. In my city Dade County; we overpay grossly for salary and services that comparable towns get for an average 38% less.
We can't have open competition for services. Part of the old union friendly contracts. Is that the future deal in a nationalized health care? No competition? Good enough?

However, the problem is not so much the union's pay as it has a the soul right to certain contracts. Whenever this happens, be it for a union of small company, it tends to work badly.
I don't blame that on unions specifically. Any big organization often does the same basic thing including corporations.
But back to the main point... I agree open competition is needed for unions to work the way they should.

It was better for me because I could go when I needed to without sacrificing a bill or two. It is a profitable industry, however, who determines how much your life is worth? Do you know what in-network and out-of-network means? Do you understand what deductible and OOP is? What exactly is a copay? How are these things calculated? Having a service covered at 100% by your insurance means (for that service) you have free health care....

On most policies, once your OOP is met, your health related services are free. If you use Medicaid for your children, you are using government subsidized health care. If the government pays for it, it doesn't change the quality. The same doctor who gets paid by the insurance company for you gets paid by the govt for medicare patients. They provide the same care. If not...

I'm just not a fan of "FREE" unless we are talking about my right to choose. I served 6yrs and nothing I got from the DOD was FREE. I earned every benefit I was awarded being available 24/7/365. After discharge it was apparent to me the inferior health care I received compared to the private sector care, and am glad to pay for the privilege!

They want to let people purchase policies across state lines. Great! But, what do they do about those who still can't afford the policies? (I used to work for an insurance company. The individual policies are ridiculously expensive and they don't cover much.) They are more concerned about profits and competition of the companies.

I sent the letters out telling doctors to send in a refund because a service was no longer covered or was subject to pre-existing conditions. I listened to doctors complaining because someone at the insurance company determined that a particular treatment wasn't medically necessary even though the person would die without it.

That is just it, they are not passed. The House has to either accept, modify, or reject the senates bill. Either way it must be voted on. If there are not enough votes it will have to be resubmitted. After that the process starts all over again. The Republican still are not the biggest problem, it is the Democrats own members that is the problem. You would know this if you knew civics. The thing I blame Bush for more than anything is the economy,and rightfully so.
Clinton gave us a financial surplus during the late 90's,up from H.M Bush's high deficits.Then Jr get's in there and pisses all that away into a deficit within a matter of 4 years.
He leaves us on the brink of a depression,on which Obama is forced to deal with.
Republicans like to point out that Obama ran up the deficit further.They never bother to mention that he did it to stop our banks from crashing though.

you can receive those because you have a right to emergency care there was a law passed back in a 1986 that said you can not be turned away from emergency care despite you ablity to pay for that service.
The simple point im trying to make is that obama's statement is very misleading if you didn't know your rights then it is possible that you would believe that people can be turned away in an ER when their life is in danjour.

john51880: at some point in your life you are going to have to trust someone, and maybe that someone maybe yourself, but when you talk of big governement, do you really think that politicians just sit there thinking about how big they can make governement, that is just unrealistic and foolish, but it says a lot about how you think. It is better to have a government that works whether it is big or small than have a govt that doesn't work big or small that is how you should think!
