'would you celebrate the birth of the someone who sacrificed himself if that was your choice'
Paul - are you aware of Leonard Peikoff's essay 'Commercialize Christmas'? If not go check it I think if you google it it's at capmag. It goes over how Christmas has little to do with Christ but instead was the invention of New York businessmen looking to make a buck.
I recall reading a piece on Christmas. What I remember from it was that it should be celebrated not as the birth of an alleged supernatural being, but as a commercial event and testament to man's productivity and benevolence.
Because Christians hold cite Jesus as the most sacrificial entity and celebrate his birth and death because, they say, "he died for our sins", I make reference to holidays the that celebrate him and his sacrificial nature....
In doing so, I was not condemning Christmas ornaments, shopping for gifts, trading gifts with loved ones, getting together for turkey/ham/eggnog etc. I'll be chopping down a Christmas tree this year, and stuffing presents beneath it for the children, etc.
But I'll be celebrating reason in a way that focusses ON man, reason, and rational productivity, on Reason's Harvest. Yes, one works and buys things every day, but Reason's Harvest is intended to help us remember what makes it all possible.
I should be making a Reason's Harvest video tomorrow. Unfortunately though I won't be able to upload it until Sunday when I'm back in school where my computer is.
Consume "conspicuously"? You mean conspicuous consumption. ;-)
It might have been a Black Friday on which the guy from the "Consuming Hypocrisy" video decided to go on his anti-commercialism spending spree of buying more issues of *Adbusters* magazine.
To celebrate reason's harvest, I'm taking gf to the mall tomorrow. I don't usually go shopping there because I have other things on my mind, but tomorrow I'm gonna go have some fun because she's a value to me. And hey, maybe I'll find something I like to buy.
I want you to know, as a student at the university, I found your words addressing students very encouraging. Sometimes I find myself wondering with everything I believe and know and learn yet I am unemployed at the moment.
*cont* And other times I wonder if it's worth it because they teach me a lot of trash at the university (I learn economics. Today the professor taught us it might be right to take 10,000$ from a rich man and give it to an African because the African would enjoy it more. ...) and I try really hard sorting out the gems of knowledge from the Communism but sometimes I find myself wondering if it's worth it. So thanks for your encouraging words.
Speaking of the Adbusters folks, did you know they also advocate bothering people who are buying stuff in stores and harassing retail workers? I really hate those people.
"Speaking of the Adbusters folks, did you know they also advocate bothering people who are buying stuff in stores and harassing retail workers? I really hate those people."
But they're doing it to save the Earth and to stop greedy multinationals from manufacturing your consent! And all that jazz. The harassment is called "Culture Jamming."
Are you saying that if Kalle Lasn keeps Culture-Jamming you like that, you're going to roll up an issue of his magazine and Culture-Jam it up his butt?
When I'm not inhaling my daily fix of Diet Pepsi, its Aquafena for me...and sometimes Arrowhead...and sometimes Dasani...and goddamnit I drank a bottle of Diet Seven-Up the other day too...and then there was that bottle of A&W Cream Soda I couldn't resist (or the one sitting next to it for that matter)...
Tap water??? I don't even like looking at it.
Happy Reason's Harvest!!! I'll be working tomorrow so my consumptive orgy shall commence that evening...tums in hand ;-)
Notice the "buy nothing day" clip shows the byproducts and waste of consumption, ignoring fire and foremost all the production required, and then the ~enjoyment~ of that production in delicious consumption. What a mind of trash (literally) that generated that "ad".
A Canadian living and working in London tipped me off about this video on Nov 5th...
I like the idea, but my question is
Who's the gorgeous babe who appears at around 2 min?

"If we consume 86% and we leave 14% for the rest of the planet, how do you think that makes them feel?"
Answer: Who gives a shit.
If you don't produce, you don't consume.

Zero sum game BS that ignoramus is spouting? The CNN host (probably herself ignorant of economics) didn't even challenge that evil bastard.

I react to that knob because if people let him go unchallenged, it only contributes to his sense of "power".
