Thank you ...you covered everything. I have some blueish smoke blowing out the exhaust when I floor it,soon as I let off it stops, no loss of power though..who knows hope this test will tell me something.
excellent vid, right to the point, i learn more from guys like you than i do at tech. school im paying 30 grand for, thanx for taking the time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got a leak down tester from hf, and I connect it to a 125psi source...BUT the source psi readout gauge only gets up to like 18psi..? I set the compression tester gauge at ZERO and perform the test... but with only 18psi? How can it be when I have 125psi in the source hose?
Is there a parameter adjustment that will let more than just 18psi into the source readout gauge?
When i hook my tester up and zero it out the regulator guage barely shows any psi on it and if i turn the regulator any higher it goes out of the 0 and dont give me a correct reading i have the same exact tester as you
thats why i was saying the tester is shit but the method is correct all you can do is buy a real tester from a tool truck or just listen to the air leak
@1sick05srt Hey I have the same exact problem. When trying the test the left hand gauge shows normal 100 psi pressure but the right hand one doesn't show me anything but 0 psi. I have an OTC tester brand new from Amazon. When I unplug the hose from the tester the psi on the right hand gauge will shoot up to normal psi... What am I doing wrong? It seems to show by the right hand gauge that my car has a 100% psi leak but that's not possible because its not leaking that fast.
Very nicely done. Thanks. @red666a . You must have each cylinder you are testing at TDC. That's what he was showing on cyl. #1. It was leaking air because it was not at TDC.
jerrys pretest.! 1st off the left gage is NOT tank pressure, that gauge is after the regulator!! Idiot test1: set tank to 50psi (100 is max stay away from 100) the pressure does not matter the tool works at any in band pressure, because of the black knob regulator. unlock the reg knob 1: 50 psi. the end hose is unplugged this action blocks the hose.\ 2: set reg to right gage 0 (max) 3: plug in hose, (no engine)note 80 % about leakage 4: put finger in end zero 0 leakage 5: plug hose to motor
I tried to post a photobucket link to show you what i was talking about in the other post, but YT doesnt allow for it. Another quick question, was your compressor regulator set that low or was there really more line pressure but the cheapo HF gauge just wounld register it? Thanks
Cheap harbor freight tool wouldn't let more then 15 psi thru it even tho the gauge went way higher. That's why it's cheap. A real gauge should allow 100psi thru. My compressor was set at 150.
Great video. I have a snap-on eepv309a, I think I need to take it back by the snap-on guy. My leak percentage gauge doesnt rest at 100% when disconnected from evereything for some reason, it's actually past the red by about 1/8" outside of the gauge range. This leads me to wonder if the gauge is now inop and it'll be inaccuarate? @ 1:10 yours is at rest but sitting high (from previous use?), but still in the gauges range. what do you think?
This was a very good video! Nice job on explaining everything you need to know on how to perform the test and different results that may occur as well as tips on figuring out exactly where the issue may be. Very nice!
Your ceap Harbor Freight leak down tester is worthless. 10-15psi is not enough to conduct a proper leak down test on an automotive engine. You should be pumping in at least 80psi.
Thank you ...you covered everything. I have some blueish smoke blowing out the exhaust when I floor it,soon as I let off it stops, no loss of power though..who knows hope this test will tell me something.

How do you get it to "zero" with the psi gauge at such a low pressure. Please do tell.
Thanks

I was wondering do you suppose to TDC on each cylinder to check for leak down?? Or it didn't matters??

one of the few posts that are 100% accurate , CONGRATS !
only thing can add,
to find exh valve leak remove FRONT 02 sensor, listen there.
and the front left gauge is not supply tank pressure its the tiny regulator
you are adjusting, just ignore the left gauge if above 0 zero.
see my other FOR HOW TO TEST THE GAGE, (im a test guy) retired
niice of you to simulate a bad cyl at 1, super job. jerry
