  • I dream of being able to play an acoustic guitar as well as John Martyn!

  • As John would say 3 cunts thumbs down! Wankers !!

  • wonderful song,brilliant performer, bliss

  • Me I respect him so much ; not understanding the song before! ( YouTube List)

  • sad to see you gone with the wind..

  • All I can say is genius! One underated man.

  • Anyone know the tuning for this song? Been experimenting with alternative tuning ALOT recently and would love to know.

  • @BlackHole2005 The tuning, as altered by the capo on the second fret, is DADGAD. So the open tuning would be CGCFGC.

  • @Waggonerslad Cheers for that man, seems to work. Sorry for the late reply but I havn't been able to get onto my youtube account recently.

  • @BlackHole2005 It's probably his own, kind of like those absurd chords that Joni Mitchell plays. I use a capo and hope for the best!

  • Who on earth dislikes this! Another great performance from a true musical genius.

  • I'm meant to be doing so much on my laptop but got waylaid by Mr.Martyn. This is my 4th of his so far, I may as well keep going, chilling beautifully, work can wait til tomorrow. Glad I saw the big man one last time.xxx

  • Like a fine wine these performances seem to get even better over time.

  • To the three people who ''disliked'' this, may I suggest that your not smokin the right stuff. This is a top bloke with an extensive catalogue of quality music. I just feel sorry for everyone who hasn't had the opportunity to hear John.

  • no one comes close ,,,no one ,,,,,,,

  • To the three "people" who gave this a "thumbs down", may you rot in hell.

    Just sayin'

  • So pure, so clean. Artists like you never last, sadly... But you lived a hard life John, but when you were on stage with your guitar, you seemed like the happiest man on planet earth. And I love you for that.!.!.!. ALLAN.

  • Wonderful.

  • Reminds me of Helsinki...

  • nice camera focüs @ 2:33!!!

     ;D

  • Simply gorgeous

  • Brilliant!

  • anyone got the chords he is playing down with the DADGAD capo 2nd tuning ye guys are talking about? can kind of get but i cant see exactly what chord it is, im not all that great. cheers =D

  • @grif04 Yes, he is playing a C minor curve chord. Have you not played that often?

  • Comment removed

  • Despite the devilish functions in his life he could deliver this kind of live performance... still inspires me, no doubt about it.

  • Curse the storm that took you away John.

  • this guy was and is a legend

  • john martyn is completely oridginal the second you hear him ya know who it is, my fav guitarist ever, dont think ya man is takin anythin away from page, martyn is just more oridginal where page is class but his best music comes from bert janch, like blackwaterside and bron yar stomp

  • it upsets me how this is a seriousy amazing guitarist yet he wont be recognised as as good as people like page and then the amount of sole he get from his playing is soo rare its so upseting that theres so few now :( john martyn i salute you and your forcasts :D

  • You aren't suggesting that Page doesn't deserve his praise, are you?

  • @PatrickandPlanB I wouldn't worry too much because there are plenty of talented artists around today. Martyn was wonderful for many reasons, and good guitarists - like J. Page - would doubtless agree with that!

  • One year after your death John - and the weather's bloody awful. I cursed it!

But I bless you for this great song

  • Rockin' away while rockin' away.

  • hey lads, been trying to learn this one, was wondering if anyone could give me a tip on the tuning of it? browsed the internet and cant seem to find a proper answer

  • DADGAD

  • DADGAD it is, but he's tuned the guitar a step lower here and used a capo at the second fret.

  • @Waggonerslad Is there anymore of this performance or is it just the two songs? I'd love to hear more as I think its some of John's strongest live stuff

  • @captaingoatbeard7 On the original OGWT broadcast he played May You Never, Small Hours, Certain Surprise, Couldn't Love You More and Big Muff. These are all available on the John Martyn at the BBC DVD. This one appeared on an old BBC video. I'm not aware of any others from this show.

  • @Waggonerslad Thanks

  • I miss your passion and joy, John. Lovely guitar introduction, and smile. LOVE YOU!

  • i love the way he sings maaaan.... =)

  • Wonderful. Guitar genius and exrraordinary talent. He will live forever in our hearts

  • bless the weather & bless the man xxx

  • bless the weather that brought you to me , John

  • may your god/s go with you John..

the more i listen to JM the more i want to get better within my own music..

long may you rock us john..legend sir..

    thnx for sharing waggonerslad..

a truly awesome talent gone to the midsts of times..RIP bigman..

  • Well while you are all talking about playing like him I just wanna say bless the weather that brought him to me..........and no storm can take his music away from our hearts..............

  • NIce one, where did you get this from btway?

Thanks for posting. I'm trying to figure this out but getting the voicing right for one of the chords is difficult -can't quite get the fingerings right even after examining the videoclips and the live in dublin dvd version of this.

Anyway-thanks very much for uploading this.

    Miss the old bugger...

  • It's from an old BBC video called "In Vision" which I found on e-bay some time ago - hence the less than perfect quality.

    Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Oh Yeah Meghan, this is another one you need to see !

  • Jubenesah!! tune the low E down to D. Main chords are Dmin and Gmin! To play along with the albumversion put a capo first fret!!! that´ll help!!

  • Does anyone else agree with me when I say small hours is the best song of all time? I dont know why not that many people are into it, just because it hasn't got a fast rhythem. Check it out. every chord has so much effort put into it, and the sound has a certain magic behind it that I cant quite put my fingure on. hypnotysing shit man. Look up small hours

  • yeah its his best song followed closly by the live version of dealer in my opinion

  • I can't believe I didn't see this earlier! Thank YOU so much for posting. Have you thought of giving it a go yourself?

    cheers

    julie

  • it's about the strings

    but the message is it

    Storm

  • What tuning is he using for this song? (With a capo on 2 I see)

The low note is D, but with capo on 2, that would mean the open note on the low string would be C right?

Can anybody give me a point in the right direction?

  • He's playing it in DADGAD but, as you say, with a capo on the second fret which makes the open tuning CGCFGC

  • thank you!

I have been playing around with this tuning and it is fun. But even watching John's fingers I still can't for the life of me figure out the 2 main chords of the song.

    Can anybody help here?

  • Play the 2nd and 4th strings at the 3rd fret then drop to the 1st fret on the 2nd string . Simple eh! Not quite so easy to make it sound this good though!!

  • er.. pardon me for shooyin' off muh big mouf.. BUT if he started in DADGAD, and capoed up a whole step.. wouldn't that make it EBEABE?? I'm just SAYin'...

  • No. Read my comment again. He started with CGCFGC and the capo makes it DADGAD.

  • think the guitar may be a Martin D28? Definetley a Martin though. Thats where john took his stage name from; as it was his favourite accoustic guitars, so the story goes.

  • He was the best: a mix of so many genres, and making his own in the process. As a jazz singer, his exquisite tone and conviction has inspired me over and over again. Wow!

  • Does anyone know the guitar model he's playing? Love J Martyn Thanks...

  • Incredible

  • RIP John, May You Never Be Forgotton!

    Class stuff!

  • curse the storm that takes you away

  • Comment removed

  • Ace Man ace music Sad passing

  • Rest in peace John. Your music is a big part of my life. May you always be remembered forever.

  • It strikes me that the only place he was ever happy was on stage with his guitar and a pint of Bass. May he find his way to the celestial pub where they have an endless supply of ale and are in desperate need of someone with a guitar.

  • @guinnesstrail Thought it was a bottle of Black Jack and a spliff? Or it was the first time I saw him....oh, and several times after that too, bless his cotton socks. Unfortunately the spliff became more prominent after a while. I saw him at the Astoria in the early '90's where he was taking them from the front of the stage. Still the same old JM, apart from the long incoherent chats between songs. But I do think you're right.....he always seemed happy on stage! Fuck, I miss him!

  • @boocoodinkydau the world is a lesser place without him :)

  • @guinnesstrail Use to heard him in the 70th in London with Beverley Great sound

    Sergio

  • @guinnesstrail i reckon if there is a pub in heaven it will be packed with guitarists. to them/us its the nearest thing to an office.

  • @guinnesstrail I agree Im sure I wouldnt have liked him personally but his music is my favourite in the entire Universe...

  • So Sad :(

    RIP

    Love Pattie

  • That explains it, pity it wasn't included on DVD. Thanks for the reply.

  • I've got the BBC DVD and this track doesn't seem to be on my copy, and isn't on the track listing. Does anyone know where it appears the DVD, maybe it is hidden the extras? Can anyone shed some light on this?

  • It's not on the DVD. It came off an old VHS tape.

  • wonderful

  • Where was the funeral?

  • To me this song was one of his best. Unfortunately he didn' play so much in Italy over the 80's and 90's. But his first concert I saw was unforgettable

  • I was at the funeral, it was lovely R.I.P.

  • i would love to know more. I was introduced to John's music circa 1974 by a friend who could pick his tunes on his steel guitar. He has accompanied me and soothed and accepted me, like Christ acually, all my life since. Bless, Audley

  • rip - some of the most beautiful music ever made

    peace

  • This is an exceptional performance by any standard or measure

  • ok... i would just like to apologise for earlier comments made in my name... I did not say anything against this man.... one of my 'friends' hacked into my account and now im receiving all these weird msgs from people.....

    I apologise again

    RIP

    x

  • May He Rest in Peace as Valiant a Man

as ever left Home.... He was Spencer the Rover!!......Bereft is not the Word I am feeling .........Go to Sleep, John & take our

    good Wishes to the Grave.........

  • God Speed Big Man- R.I.P.

Bless the weather that brought you to me, Curse the storm that takes you away...........missing you already.. x

  • Saw you in the National Stadium, Dublin, in the late 70s, and later in 1999 in the mean Fiddler, Harlesden, London. Thanks for great albums i enjoyed all the more for the hiss in the grooves..... Rest In Peace, Ej, Dublin

  • hezzzz sooooooo sexxxxxxy!!!

  • you are obviously trying to get a reaction out of people because he passed away yesterday. which is a bit sad

  • to take our souls to a very compassionate space

  • to go deep within

  • At his peak, the greatest

  • I first heard this song at school 36 years ago. The great man's music has been part of me ever since. I mourn his passing but rejoice in his memory.

  • we are not worthy

  • R.I.P John,such beautiful soulful timeless music.

  • A true legend whose uncompromising character furnished us with some of the most wonderful lyrics, guitar playing & vocals ever...

    Goodnight big man

  • Rest in Peace you mighty one legged legend. I'll never forget this man's music! Beautiful every step of the way.

  • hope you had a fast exit john RIP you inspired me for years

  • I saw him play at the Hastings Old Town RNLI free beach concert - awesome and beautiful looking back from the beach to the cliffs and the castle playing 'Over the Hill'

    Precious memory, talented man.

Hope his end was peaceful and may his music live on.

  • Gutted. I didn't know personally but I'm crying like I lost my brother. Thanks for all you gave us. Rest in peace my friend.

  • Much love JM.

  • I have a broken musical heart! the more comments I read it all hits home.

I got to see him twice. What a rarety ,an aquired taste, an increidble gift.

He sure lived his life to the full.

May Gods love be with you.

  • Farewell my friend.

  • One thing I loved about John Martyn was the sheer pleasure he himself seemed to take in the music he played, the smiles and giggles when he played something even he seemed to be in awe of, just like we were...

The more I watch him on here the more and more I wish I had taken that chance to see him when I could've...

  • Such a warm chocolate brown voice... part of the soundtrack of my life... so sorry xx always in my heart

  • The world has lost a talent unlike no other today, i only wish it knew. Love you John, hope you are in a better place!!!!

  • Youed your work, another light has gone out in our lives today. God speed mate

    XX

  • Our love goes with you John, as your music stays with us. Thanks for it all. Devastated.

  • Another of my heros passed away today. Amazing talent.

  • Same here. RIP John what an amazing soulful talent you were.

  • To John

"Bless the weather that brought you to me, curse the storm that takes you away"

    RIP

  • could not say better

  • rest in peace john martyn. Can't stop watching his videos since hes gone. I had the pleasure of seeing him in 2007, he was fantastic.

  • A great talent. RIP.

  • the man is a one off....has written some of the most influential songs of all time and is clearly one of the most talented guitarist of all time....yet some of the comments are referring to addictions etc....Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison both died from their addictions yet are remembered as geniuses..JM is here still one bit of his leg is gone but thank feck it ain't one of his arms..glass houses and stones. JM like all of us has problems..don't judge anyone for their life and its reverberations

  • Beautifully deep and hypnotic.

  • Saw him in Dublin the other night. Absolutely brilliant. Incoherent between the songs but by Jesus when he sang and played he was out of this world. actually got to talk to him for a minute (he was staying in the same hotel) but I was incoherent then. God bless you John, thanks for the music and the live performances.

  • An amazing man. Saw him last year, the performance was just stunning. His playing and voice still intact but obviously less vibrant than the 70's. You do worry for him though, he is hugely overweight and was almost incoherent between the songs (but sounded 'merry')

  • Great stuff - origonal

  • john martyn gives it all in his music.there is a big transformation when he s talking to the audience.

  • Genius!!!!!

  • Fuck the weather ...

    Bless you sir ...

  • that vocal is unreal.... his soul is in his voice.

  • play and sing like this...

  • Musicians like this today are as rare as rocking horse shit.

  • i was exactly one week old when this was filmed. John was 29, now i'm 30 and i love the man.

  • This is a very gutsy performance.

This man is the real deal.

  • he can apparently drink a guinness in one go thats no that easy

  • according to his recent biography, JM has been know to drink a bottle of bacardi in one go.

Ouch, that must burn the old throat a little

  • Well the pair fella lost a leg because of it. Because its better to burn out than fade away

  • Actually no. Having your leg fall off because of your alcohol addiction (look up "gout") is neither cool nor funny.

  • I didn't say it was funny.

  • We all know drinkung like John once did is foolish, but look what he gave the world! as far as I know he had severe diabetes thet lead to the leg amputation.

I had the honour of spending some time with him once and I found him to be an absolute gent, funny, generous and full of life.

We will never forget John and what he gave us. And his music will keep on giving.

'whay hame now John, and we'll be thinking of you.

  • Or I could just look down about 5 comments :D

  • Cant get enough of this song, incredible!Does anyone know what kind of pickup John uses?

  • thanks for this waggonerslad, lovely stuff. he toured canada couple times during this period and i saw him in toronto, fabulous ! lotta echoplex.

you mean i can buy this on dvd? yikes!

    the word of gord

  • Hi. No, I don't think you can get this on DVD unfortunately. I took it from an old VHS tape.

  • Perfect.

    k

  • The man is from Glasgow ...

    Resides in Chicago ...

    Cant say no mo ...

  • He resides in Ireland, actually.

  • Cheers...

    Hope he is keeping well...

He always was on the move...

  • Does anyone out there have the tunings and tab for Head and Heart?Listened to it at the weekend and thought i would give it a go

  • B A D G A D. Azing song, type in 'John Martyn Tab'into google, about second link down for good site.

  • You can play it in DADGAD just as easily. Sounds a bit less buzzy too I'd suggest.

  • Anoraks!!

Get back to your trainspotting I say!!

  • These comments were in response to an earlier one asking for the tuning for "head and heart". Just trying to be helpful - it's a bit much to equate it to trainspotting!!

I almost never do that! :)

  • SSSHHH, I won't tell them if you don't!! ;)

  • its not trainspotty people want to play it at home, musicians should be complemented for trying to take their craft seriously in this day and age when talentless DJ's are given more respect than real musicians.

  • Was actually a Barcus Berry gaffa taped on to one of his Martins(sic)His favourite was a Yamaha as I recall

  • Haha he's so high. AMAZING STUNINNG song! top performance. Bless you john.

  • First time I heard this and I love this song....Thanks sooo much

  • Brilliant video of a brilliant song. Ha ha, check the cheeky joint stuck under the strings at the nut. :p

  • lol, just noticed it.

  • Immense

  • you got to love this man

  • If anyone knows of somewhere I can find tab for these acoustic pieces I'd love to know - thanks for sharing.

  • pretty much speechless...whatever personal torments he's gone through to result in current physical state is his business...of course we wish the BEST but at least his LOVE for music is unwaivering!...

    much respect to you, john!

  • Love Ya JM -

    Bless the weather indeed...

  • I love how his pickup is taped in! It shows that you can still be an incredible musician and not have the fancy new expensive equipment that every new guitarist thinks he/she needs.

  • That is expensive equipment. It just happens to be taped on! Besides, who wants to drill through their favourite acoustic.

  • at times the timing is off but when you consider what the guy is actually playing, and then you see that smile on his face, everything just works. incredible. you've got to love JM

  • Does anyone know if there's a CD with this very performance of 'Bless the Weather' included? I must have it. Incredible.

  • Bless the weather that brought you to me (PAM) great tune, John's the man!

  • Not many people can keep 2 chords going for a whole song like John. i guess it's in the textures he creates with his SUPERB voice.hail JM we love you and miss the days when music wasn't screwed for money in the 1st and last and all the in between instances.

  • John Martyn is a true music icon! Oh.. and he likes a drink. Seen him twice, 1st time he was on crutches, 2nd time in a wheelchair, probabley turn up in a coffin next time. Legend!

  • anyone got a tab for this osng?

  • there are tabs for some of his songs at johnmartyn. com in the 'articles' section - i think 'bless the weather' is one of them

  • Super job. Saw him a couple of months ago in Dublin. So sad to see him wheeled on stage in a wheelchair after he lost his leg. But I'm happy to report he was in great form and interacted with the audience as only he can, and was playing at his best again.

  • Finding these live performances of John Martyn have made me a happy man. Bless you all for posting these gems of genius. Old and new, the man's aim is true...

  • By the way, Waggonerslad, thank you immensely for this clip. What amazes me most of all is JM's incredible sense of rhythm in this piece, his heart leading as usual.

  • He seems really fucked up. Fantastic song, though.

  • Yeah, the bruising around the eyes and his cheeky stoned smile throughout this gig suggest he may have been somewhat chemically refreshed during the performance. (Either that, or the spliff in the head of the guitar.)

More power to him though - I've been content to incessantly pick an A minor chord very slowly when stoned.

Shame this isn't an extra on the BBC DVD - perhaps because of the lost vocals at the start of the track...?

  • Lost vocals??

  • I just meant that the first couple of words of the song don't seem to have been picked up by the mic, but that's probably just because they're sung quietly.

Cheers for posting this - quality stuff from JM at the peak of his powers. Any more rare JM video would be greatly appreciated!
