Not that I side with Deathcore or Metalcore over this, but I heard nothing special. It's just slow death metal. You can take any death metal riff, slow it down, and it can go into this video. Just because it's old doesn't make it best, as well as the inverse of what I said.

As for Deathcore, the only thing I can think of that differentiates it from this is more blast beats and high-pitch screaming (which I hate). What else is different? Or is everyone just nitpicking?

While I in part agree that it is just a riff with HEAVY groove I would say that the best slams are the ones that sound almost as if they are "falling into themselves". It is a hard sound to try and explain but it sounds like the music is folding into itself and dropping down.

The thing is that slam is awesome because it is one of the only styles that is able to go slow and have groovy beats like think about it do u really think about that imagine if technical death metal bands changed their speed. It wouldnt work well and also the reason why metalcore and deathcore suck is because of:

2. Their stupid breakdowns

Usually alot of bands know how to mask it by either using realistic drum sample kits and having decent programed beats (For EX - its not to simplistic and repetitive sounding, or impossibly real hard/accurate for any drummer to play) Here are the following bands in this video who use drum machines:
