Great informative video, thank you very much. I'm very new to all this so a video like this is great for beginners like myself.
Question though, I have a juniper "na na" it's about 2 feet tall and the pot dimensions are 5"x9"x3". Would it be okay to place moss on this particular plant though it is smaller in size of the one you have. I'm looking to keep it on the plant.
@triotrees - Moss reproduces by spreading and by spores (not true seeds). The key is fining moss that grows in full sun. We have quite a bit of it! Moss likes humidity but not to be wet.
ok thanks, secondly, ive gone out to the forest and found a good patch of moss. I gently removed it and placed it on the soil of my bonsai. I dont think i did it right because the moss died and it didnt help at all. Im very new at this and i would really appriciate it if you could answer these quick questions:
1. When should i repot it, ive recently gotten a Jappenese Juniper and im not sure at what time and with what soil,
@triotrees - On gathering moss: as the video says, most use it for exhibition only. If you carefully monitor the tree/soil, you CAN grow moss under the bonsai. Moss that grows in full sunlight is the only kind that will survive long-term with bonsai. Answers to your other questions can be found in your library, online, and on YT. Good luck and have fun!
@fyaglidere Who are you? It's not like people consciously choose to speak in monotone. That's like saying "your eye are brown, but I liked your video anyway"
I bought some irish moss (Sagina Subulata) for eventual use with bonsai. You know what kind of species that would be most compatible with? And what if you're using a deep pot, would that alleviate most of the concerns for incompatibility?
You could make a miniature moss/rock garden in that flat pot! Place some stones in a sea of moss. Like those smaller riverbed rocks. If youre going to have a pot full of moss, you might as well add some artistic flair.
Ok so I was wondering..moss needs to be in shade to grown and stay alive but what do u do wen u need to give your bonsai sun? How do u do it without killing the moss or turning it brown? And yet giving your bonsai the full sun it needs?
@pandabear102409 i put the white rocks (im not sure of the correct term) over the moss until you can see the moss through the rocks, that way the moss gets watered as does the tree get sunlight
Charles, I have learnt so much from your lessons, I would like to learn about the type of soil that is best to use. I live in Australia and find it dificult to access certain types of items needed to the soil.
I have just found granite fines that people uses in their aquariums sot this has helped. Can you let me know the sol consistancy please
@shia120 You need to mix the yogurt with moss spores [aka put yogurt and pieces of moss into a blender and pulse until there are no more large chunks of moss left] and then 'paint' it onto the rock first. The yogurt is the food for the moss to grow. It might take a while but it's worth it.
haha "sounds effects by:..." love it! Great video, I have been wondering on how to set up a moss flat, well I know what I will be doing this afternoon :-)

a cool little tip is to wipe your moss with milk to make it much more green i use this technique before i enter a plant into a show
codlover713 2 months ago
@codlover713 its due to the acid in the milk. moss loves it

does the moss effect the watering amount?
great video and i love all your bonzai
triotrees 3 months ago
@triotrees I think moss would hold moisture in the soil longer.
