I loooove the song that starts at 3:07 my fav! I was in the Nutcracker with the Alberta Ballet company and we used this music now it sound so . . classic to me. I love it!
I love Tchaikovsky's music especially the Classical Nutcracker. I used to dance for MN Classical Ballet Academy and regret quitting but I still go to the performance the Nutcracker each year. It's quite an amazing ballet and keeps you at the edge of your seat. Especially the talented girl who has played Clara for 3 years in a row. I know all songs by heart and recommend anyone whose in love with Nutcracker as much as me go see the ballet Dec. 14-18th at the O'Shaunessy theatre St.Kates Stpaul.MN
Grew up as a little girl doing some ballet (Nutcracker :D), listening to this music, and watching the Barbie movie :D Beautiful, lots of sweet memories :) Thanks sooo much for uploading this :D Really good for times when I just need to relax and listen to the music :D
The Nutcracker is my most fav ballet, &fav ballet music - the Dance of the Snowdrops always makes me cry! My family used to see it at the Royal Festival Hall Christmastime. Doesnt matter how old you are, its just magical :)
I think this is really nice, Tchaikovsky is one my favourites because of the Nutckracker(I love how Christmasy it sounds/feels) but 'Dance of the sugarplum fairy' will always be my favourite, sounds like a fairy or Santa is sneaking presents down the chimney on Christmas eve or something haha =P
Love this Overture strange it comes in two movements which are very different you would nearly think that Tchaikovsky wrote the first part of the movement as a statement of his love for Ballet. The second part of this movement is much more political and towards the end of the second movement realises he has said all he wants to. A marriage of the first and second comes just at the end. CGSNI
thanks to mahlerite for these uploads, and thanks to tchaikovsky himself for such a wonderful composition. i feel more in christmas spirit as i listen to the nutcracker. :)
In Hungary it's some kind of a tradition that if you see Nutcracker once in the Operahouse you'll return and see it every winter. There are little ones who comes to see it for the first time and we who needs it just as much as they =) This evening I went to see it and I can say it is just as amazing as it was some years ago! I don't know what did he think about it but for me Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker is something that helds most of my childhood memories... It was so nostalgic... =)
surprising to think that he actually believed his 'Nutcracker' pieces were abominations. I can't see how he wouldn't like them. They're some of my favorite classical pieces of music.
I saw the Nutcracker Ballet 3 times growing up! I saw it with my pre-school friends, when I was 12 with my mother in Rhode Island and then I saw it again when I was living on Cape Cod at Barnstable High School when they did a production of Nutcracker! I really want to go and see it again but I don't have the money this year. :(
@Serenity202 I don't think he actually DISliked the music...he had to have been happy with it enough. He probably disliked the fact that he was given so many restrictions and instructions in this commission.
@mahlerite That's how it usually works. I can just picture him sitting there, "Oh god what am I going to name it! Hmm... Arabian Dance, Overture..." Who can blame him. That's what I would do.
this man is a genius, will someone go and try to ask someone in your school or a teacher and see if they know this person,i did and mostly didnt reconize this person.
When I first got addicted to classical music (Bolero was the one that made me love classical music) I thought there only was the Nutcracker Suite. I had no idea what the original ballet was. But when I bought the complete ballet thinking that it was the Suite, I was dumbfounded. But soon I realized that I had found a great treasure...
Bolero is an excellent introductory piece! Wonderful, clear displays of tone color. The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra by Benjamin Britten is also a fitting work for newcomers to classical. The act 3 prelude of Wagner's Lohengrin was the first composition that got me hooked.
Normally I upload entire works, but I wanted to post a very accessible and appropriate piece around x-mas. Plus, I unfortunately don't own the whole Nutcracker ballet.
Ironically, I learned about the Young Person's Guide when I was very familiar to classical music, (when I was listening to full-scale Mahler stuff), along with Saint-Saens. At my 'pops'-> 'mildly serious' transition, I was insanely fond of the Waldstein and the Hammerklavier. Before I learned about Ravel, I had a concert. There was a guy named 'Ravel' on the program. I had no idea who that was. And 'Khachaturian'. But I regret a lot; I love both of their piano concertos! (Continued)
@mahlerite I was enrolled in ballet when I was three, Tchaivosky was my first introduction to the realm of classical music. At five I saved up my money and bought a tape with the complete Nutcracker ballet on it, I loved that tape to death..... My next introduction to composers other than Tchaivosky was actually from Tom and Jerry where I was introduce to Johann Strauss II.... Many years later I remain enchanted with classical music :)
A little comment on the video style; I like how you just use one picture; it is quite organized. Now I am torn between the two ideas; less organization with more pictures or more organization with one picture!
Tchaikovsky wrote some of the prettiest melodies. I uploaded these as a holiday gift to the youtube community. lol.
Organization: I'd say it depends on the music. For program music, I can see how it would be beneficial, as there are extramusical ties to the work. But I also like what you did with Prokofiev's 5th, where Stalin was pictured during the climax of the 1st movement. If the visuals are relevant, then I'd say it's fine. Otherwise, I try to make the music the primary focus in my videos.
I always associated Tcaikovsky to Saint-Saens. They both wrote serious works (lets take the Saint Saens and the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto, for example), but they wrote childish, light pieces like this one and the Carnival of the Animals. It is a great refreshment from all the Mahlerian serious stuff for me.
I think I know what you mean man. Mahler sometimes is too much for me on an emotional level. Like, take his 9th: one listen kind of overwhelms me by the end, and there are many days when I do not want to listen to it strictly because of its affective force. Mozart is more of my go-to guy for the lighter absolute music (although I know he has heavy works as well, such as the Requiem). It's relieving.
But often I end up turning on the Mahler 4 for that calming mood. It is quite odd, it seems to be the least 'Mahlerian'. Ironically, I love Mahler and yet that happens to be my 2nd favorite symphony...
..and G'd nighties. I'm going to sleep now. I have a orchestra rehearsal tomorrow (playing Baccanale (Saint-Saens), On the Trail (Grofe), and the Brandenburg Concerto. Abridged versions of course.)
