  • SWEET!!!! Made my day!!!

  • Awsome

  • GREAT

  • GREAT

  • FANTASTIC!!!

  • Would somebody please post more of Randy & Gary Scruggs? I have an LP by them from the early 70s that's amazing. I'd love to hear their version of Lowlands. I thank Earl and his Beverly Hillbillies theme for hooking me on bluegrass at a tender age in the early 1960's.

  • Gibson Commercial ? Anyway "la Creme" of Bluegrass. I forgot how beautiful Earl's back-ups are; Fantastic .

  • Can someone send me a link to what CD/album this is on??? I've been looking for this cd EVERYWHERE-- I'm not sure whose name to look for it under; you know. This is the best version of this song ever made!

  • What a great way to start the day. Missin Bobby Hicks though.

  • EARL ROCKS!!!!!!!!! NUFF SAID!

  • Earl's still got it at that age. Awesome.

  • Does anyone know if that's Earl's Granada banjo, or a Gibson Scruggs standard? I can't tell if I see a gold tone ring.

  • Its a standard, and what you are talking about is the flange, not the tone ring.

  • Everything on his original banjo has been replaced at least once, except for the rim and tone ring, those are the only original parts. The tone ring is the only gold hardware left on the banjo. Everything else is nickel plated.

  • Hi Carter, I noticed Earl's gold tone ring as well, but the resinator is also original, but Earl had it refinished, twice, LOL!

  • Yup! I like the original sunburst the best.

  • Yeah, it looks great! Something might have happened to it to make Earl have it refinished, Earl likes to get it how he wants it and leave it alone, he changed his hardware because it was damaged by fiddle rosin, the neck because it was warped, but he changed it back later..except for the hardware. What on earth got ahold'a that man, LOL!

  • Yup, I heard from an undisclosed source that the neck has been changed more than 7 times!! And yes, the fiddle rosin melted when it was left in the banjo case when Don went to WWII (I think), and it melted all over the plating, ruining it. And then neck warped because of all those years being tuned to a G# instead of a G. I think they refinished the res. when he sent it to Gibson in 49, and then again in the 80's when he had it restored with Gibson again.

  • I've seen quite a few old Pre wars where the finish has wore off to an extent, who knows?

Yes, I read where Earl said he tuned it up to G# because Lester's voice was higher in his younger years, G# was my fav tuning for awhile, but our bass player couldn't sing in it, so I say in G most of the time. So if it was year before Earl changed the neck, what year was it? I want to know if Dear Ol Dixie was recorded witha Maple neck or not.

  • Sorry, I left out the "S" in years "if it was years before Earl changed the neck, what year was it?"

  • A lot of resonators have finish spot worn off called "belt burn". The belt buckle rubs against the back of the resonator and scrapes off the finish on a small part of the resonator.

  • Here are the necks Earl used and the years he used them:

    1) The original neck on his Granada was curly maple.

    2) In 1950, Earl replaced that neck with the curly maple with bowtie inlays, used on the Foggy Mountain Jamboree (Columbia) and Country Music albums (Mercury). He shaved that neck down to make it more comfortable and it warped from a mix of the shaving and G# tuning.

    (cont'd)

  • 3) In 1958 the neck was replaced with the mahog. H&F inlays, that is famous for being used on the Martha White Shows and used on all but the first two F&S albums. In the mid 60's, a rosewood fingerboard was installed.

    4) In 1985, Jim Faulkner replaced the mahog. neck with a H&F curly maple, as was an exact replica of the original neck on his Granada. That neck is still being used today.

    Complicated? LOL

  • Not complicated, but I found out Earl had a maple neck on Dear Ol Dixie, YES! My banjo is all maple!

  • Except for the rim! LOL

  • I thought the rim was maple as well, I'll cheak into that.

  • I thought from when we checked it out, it was a JBP (JB player or whatever) had a metal rim. I dunno maybe I found the wrong model. Is the rim metal or wood?

  • Right, its metal, my bad *wacks self on head*

  • I've never heard of maple aluminium! LOL

  • Hey, now thats an idea, LOL!

  • Hmm....COPYRIGHT!!! LOL

  • Sure enough, before I could get it copyrighted someone probably would have beat me to the punch, huh? LOL.

  • Well, first you'd have to invent the damn stuff! LOL

  • True, LOL.

  • Hmm, I guess you'd have to combine metl and wood some way first, maybe melt em both down or something. i dunno I ain't the brains tonrihgt LOL

  • Gee, I didn't know wood could melt, LOL!!

  • Hey I already told ya I ain't thinkin the best tonight!!! LOL I guess you'd have to melt down the metal and combine it with the intact wood...somehow! LOL

  • Sounds like a game, see who can chisel away the metal to get to the wood first, LOL. Hmm...

  • Hmmm indeed! LOL

I guess you'd maybe make it in layers, wood on the inside of the rim, and a layer of metal on the outside. That idea could be as original as Stelling's idea of a wedge fit tone ring! Oops, I have said too much! Don't count on hearing from me again, I'm sure Stelling has hitmen to deal with info leakers like me !LOL

  • Goodbye Carter, will me yer banjo! LOL!

  • That's gonna be pretty hard, I already promised it to Earl! LOL!!!

I find Stellings pretty nasal sounding and high pitched. Too much so. Earl's banjo during the ESR days was great, but Setllings are just to high pitched. No bottom end AT ALL!

  • One of the problems with Stelling is the price, dag gone! If I wanted to pay 6000 bucks I'd just get a Granada! LOL.

Check out Earl's banjo in the original F/S recordings of Earl's Breakdown, Dear Ol Dixie, and Flint Hill, Sweet!

Earl has a heck of a banjo!

  • Oh yah!

I really like the tone he got on ESR records! Bright and ringy, but still a bottom end that could rattle a house! LOL

  • Listen to the carneige hall album, the bass string gives it away, they were new strings!

So do you know a ESR recording in particular that really shows the tone off?

  • I REALLY like the Fireball Mail on Dueling Banjos/Live at Kansas State album.

I like all the roecordings on that album! But my favs are FMB, Fireball Mail, and Sally Goodin! All have great tone! I think Fireball Mail shows off his tone thie best though.

  • Yeah, Fireball Mail is a good tune to show off tone, ain't it? I think I like the F/S version better though.

  • There WAS the Martha White Show version of it on YouTube, but it's no longer there! I was lucky enough to have it downloaded, I can email it to you if ya want.

I think the Dueling banjos/live at KS state FIreball Mail is very close tonewise to the F/S version on the Martha White shows.

  • That'd be great carter, thanks! Uh..did you so happen to download Groundspeed and Sally ann that WAS on here but IS no more? LOL! On second thought, that'd probably bring the Martha White hitman on us, LOL!

  • Well, there's 3 hitmen AND Brent! LOL

I'll fire off an email later. If I can't I will put it BACK on the Tube! I don't think I downloaded Sally Ann and Groundspeed. Sorry!

  • Its cool. Don't take to big a risk Carter, yer liable to have yer account suspended!

  • Hmmm...I'll create another one to put "risky stuff" on the Tube! I'll post when I get it up.

  • Thanks carter!

  • I don't mind! If it serves the bluegrass world I'm hapy to do it!

  • Well I'm posting with my new account! You should probably subscribe so you know when I put some of them risky vids up! Probably be some tonight, I dunno I got the flu, but they will be up soon!

    Carter

  • Thanks alot man!

  • No problem...as long as my main account is okay and doesn't get suspended. I think I registred carteru92 with a diff. name and email.

  • AND age, I didn't know you where 36! LOL!

  • Hmmm neither did I!! LOL

  • If I had $6000 I'd but a prewar style 00 or 1 or even a 2 and get a Blaylock ring and 5 string neck put on it.

  • Thanks Carter!

  • Just to clarify- My Dad did a great deal of custom work on the neck of Earl's Granada during the 70's and early 80's, and also some work on the guitar that Randy got from Hank Jr that was Sr's. Dad and Earl were good friends for a number of years while we lived in GA. I remember then coming to the house when I was small and them having jam sessions in Dad's office.

  • There're all pros.Good to hear something so simple done so well.Check out the Dobro break.

  • very nice...
