  • I got the exact same christmas present as you! aha

  • Your old turntable must have a built in preamp, many modern non audiophile tables do. Glad you got it going now, I bet it all sounds great.

  • Yeah. That's a preamp issue. Im sure once you get that hooked up it will be fine!

  • @mrhoffame It came today! Sounds so good now. Thanks man!

  • Congrats on solving the problem, the VC is so fantastic at pulling together to help each other out. Also, congratulations on the fantastic new TT! Happy holidays Alex, enjoy! - Lj

  • @BioCYTE1 Thanks a lot man. My preamp arrived today and I haven't left my room since. Too Many records, so little time! Happy holidays to you too..

  • I think it's the fact that the input on your amp isn't a true phono input. The reason I say this is because it's got "AUX" mixed in there. I think the pre-amp will sort out your problem.

  • @McSoappy Yes, it was that. Preamp came today and it works now. Sounds so good. Thanks!

  • I think I have the answer. The fact that the input says AUX/Phono suggests that it is not a true phono input. Aux is for other components like tape deck or CD player. It could be used with a turntable with a ceramic cartridge which is probably what your Sony has. Ceramic cartridges do not require a pre-amp but also are harder on your records as they track much heavier than moving magnet ones. When your pre-amp arrives, hook it to this input and I'm sure your issue is solved.

  • The Sony has got nothing else than a ceramic cartridge with a high mV output.

And this is an integrated amplifier presented. Surely, you can connect external preamps and caps load?

  • @SlimeAmTheBest Yes, you should be able to connect an external pre-amp with no problem. Someone suggested the Sony has a built in preamp with a MM cartridge. That would explain why it works with the amp. The only other explanation is that the sony has no built-in pre-amp and a ceramic cartridge.

  • "Someone suggested the Sony has a built in preamp with a MM cartridge."

What is 'the' Sony, ben? We can search the productivity lines and the PS-LX series. Are you concluding this Sony has a MM cartridge? The badged Sanyo is apparent in Alex's video. For another instance, the PS-LX200 has got a fixed AT AT3600.

  • @SlimeAmTheBest I have it working now! Thanks for the help. Sounds amazing!

  • @beninski707 You were right man! Looked it up and thats not a feature that comes with the cambridge. The preamp came today and it sounds great now. Thanks for the help!

  • Hey Alex, I am going to suggest to you just a few things that you may have checked 100 times or you may have not. Is there a ground wire on it? It should work if grounded properly because you said another turntable works in that same jack. That rules out your receiver. Also, take the cartridge out and reconnect it again. Make sure all the connections are firm.

Lastly, did you contact the place where you bought it and asked them if anyone else had any issues? Good luck, hang in there~

  • @Paneeks1960 Hi Rob. My Preamp came today and it now works fine and sounds AMAZING! Thanks for the help. Much appreciated!

  • I just found a similar looking one on Richer Sounds, and it does not have a Phono pre amp inbuilt, the model I found was the Topaz A5.

So I am certain that you need a Phono Pre amp, it is an additional cost, but will certainly be better if (say) your amp had one.

  • Daft, but I didn't see the whole video through. The input says Phono/Aux so it is not a pre amplified input. The fact that the Sony plays means probably that the Sony turntable has it inbuilt.

What model is the Cambridge Amp? You could find the specs online.

  • @sonicmainliner Ahh I see now. I have checked the specs and your right... it doesn't have a built in phono stage, so hopefully the preamp will solve my problem. Thanks man, that's a big help.

  • @MrDylanRecords That is it then, bummer that you can't enjoy it right away, but at least you know that you bought the right thing for the job.

    No worries, and happy listening!

  • @MrDylanRecords Yes the Sony turntable probably has a pre-amp built in. That seems def to be the problem. Well, that ain't really a problem, it will only cost you some for a separate pre-amp but that one will probably be much better then the pre-amp built in the Sony. Soundwise it is also much better to have a pre-amp seperate from the turntable!! To avoid unwanted noise.. Cambridge also makes seperate nice phono stages (= phono pre-amp) for a affordable price, the AZUR series..

  • Does the amp have inputs called Phono? If not then you need one, if it does then you shouldn't.

Although you mentioned on your previous video that your dad is geeky, so he should have spotted that, but you never know.

  • @sonicmainliner It has an input called AUX/Phono which wprks with my other turntable, its just the Project that doesnt work.

  • @sonicmainliner Got it working today as my preamp came in the post. So happy! Thanks for all the help man.

  • @MrDylanRecords No worries mate, enjoy!
