Kudos to Ruby. First for keeping on when she admitted she was discouraged several times. Second, for listening to what an adult had to say, especially a father. That's so rare today. And third for realizing that this skill could actually be useful someday. I have never had to use such basic resources for building temp shelters. I always keep several tarps and basic outdoor tools in my Jeep. However, I came to theses videos looking for instruction in these skills, and find this to be very useful.
good job i think its cool u would challenge urself like this. the people with the shity comments are lazy men who probalaly pay to have there oil changed. keep up the good work .
You know Ruby bring up a good question. when building one of these shelters i have been wondering how sod would work for the wall. especially when you don't have a lot of leaves to work with.
YEAH you go Ruby.I"m glade to finaly she woman jumping into survival Now you guys dont rag on this girl, Dont see any of you nay sayers putting up videos.any way s Ruby I hope to see you doing other videos and bushcraft
This is the only video i've seen that wasnt from a man... its really great to see girls getting into bushcraft/survival.. its a bit of a 'sausage fest' right now if you ask me... I like to see the "womens perspective" on some of the techniques, helps to refine my own designs or plans and give me new ideas on how to do things better.. I hope you keep at it!
Nice work, Ruby. A great skill to have regardless of situations that may arise. You have a great father who cares enough about you to teach you. That is the biggest lesson in this video.
OutSTANDing ! You may wish to stuff a bunch of debris INSIDE, as well and stuff that bag full of leaves and use it as a blanket. My daughter is 18 and I built her a bugout bag and she is too busy hanging with her "peeps" to learn the required skills to use those tools, much less, to do what you have done and use what is at hand. This could save your life ... a friend's life ... even yer dad, if he gets hurt. You did this on yer own, despite the boredom ... That's what it takes. (u knew that)
Good job Ruby! I have two daughters (younger than you) who I've been taking into the bush, hopefully they have picked up a little something. I was concerned about your entrance falling at first. But after I looked closer, I saw how you worked the two big y's together to make a smaller y to hold the ridge pole. Great way to use what you had available.
all those who described in there comments that this was not a spider shelter were correct it is not a spider shelter but an A frame lean to.
similar in shape to a raised bed A frame it uses the same pressures to it's advantage, but the way of a lean to in the form of only having a single side of raised supports making the spine of the shelter the most vunerable part.
The shelter in this video is a perfectly reasonable attempt of a survival shelter. good demonstration Ruby many could learn from u
Give ya a thumbs up for the attempt and completeing the shelter. But think i would used the tarp u laid on to make a quick tarp shelter. Gives about same, if not better, protection from the elements and takes like 5 mins to set up (not to mention ..NO SPIDERS..lol). But again, for one of ur age, u did an execellent job on maintaining ur mental state and completeing the project. GOOD JOB!!!
Great job! So funny, you have a spider shelter named Skeletor. My daughter, Shell, I sometimes call Skeletor ( she hates it) is extremely scared of spiders. I have been taking my daughters camping since before they knew we were camping. They are both grown now. One finished college last year and the other started college this year. They still love to play in the fire and stare at it like a television.
Why would anyone be critical of any aspect of this video? It's encouraging to see a teenager with an interest in doing something on her own in the outdoors. This is an accomplishment to be proud of and helps develop skills that may be useful in the future. If there ever comes a time when such a shelter is actually required, I don't think the correct name will be the least bit important. Nice video.

@allprogrammer your channel doesn't have any useful information. You aren't teaching anyone anything or having good positive feedback. Ruby did exactly what she should do with what she had. If you are flaming to make people think you can do better save your comments and simply prove it. Awesome job Ruby I would be proud to be your father and call you my daughter.
@allprogammer First, you are incorrect, it is called a "debris shelter" and is nicknamed a "spider shelter" due to the large amount of insects (mainly spiders). Secondly, Instead of just disagreeing respectfully, you had to add in a demeaning assumption based on your lack of knowledge. Lastly, Your demeaning statement was written so poorly, that anything you had intended on expressing was immediately discredited and immediately labeled yourself as unintelligent.Who really needs to read a book?
@Back2DaBasix Don't let the arm chair experts and idiots get you down. You and your daughters will be gaining weight and staying warm long after peole like that start crying for help.
Nice Job Ruby! I don't care who you are- that's a good job! I sometimes name my shelters too- they become good old friends. Each time we make one, we learn- you taught me some things watching yours, and that's what it's all about! Your perseverance and honesty will serve you your whole life through. I'm sure Dave is mighty proud, as I'm sure your dad is! Obviously, you have a lot going for you, and your dad is a lucky man- good luck in your future. Thanks for posting this. Take care, Pete D.---
You must be so proud to have a daughter that can do something like this on her own, she looks like loads of fun to have around. Good job as a Dad to teach your kids things like this. Keep up the good work! Having a daughter is so cool!
@Sallywmd989 Ruby and myself are wired genetically to the outdoors her grandma is a pretty outdoorsy person as well :) Your Msg has been given to Ruby.
this is what kids NEED! get away from miley cyrus trash and iCarly and video games and get outside and do things that get your body moving! :) this is great!
I am very very impressed. What a great young lady. I never had kids. But I would be proud to have her as my daughter. Way to go girl! I'm proud of you. Even though you're not mine. LOL
Yeah. Like "I love you, dad" was not going to be a part of it.
We will ALWAYS show that off.
Gotta love daughters.
I went over to watch Canterbury's and didn't get the ridge being the length of the body. I was taught to go as high as your reach or over and "heart high" for the A frame.
Hey Ruby, great job!! I see am not the only dad that has been blessed with girls:) I love to get them out fishing, hiking, camping and as many other outdoor things as I can. Stick to it and you will see how much fun the outdoors can be:)
Hey Ruby great job my Wilderness Sister!!! Keep up the good work I think Dad better watch out because Sister Ruby is about to become a Survival Sister and get her own show on Nickelodeon or something like that???? Never know my Wilderness Sister you look like you know what you are doing!!! Keep On!!! Keep'in On!!! Sister!!!
GREAT JOB !! Its good to see young ladies who take a interest in these things. Skills that may well save your life and possibly others too. Good on your Dad for loving you enough to want you to learn them
Wow! She did awesome! Ruby, fighting that loneliness and your mind racing is a pain sometimes but it is manageable, and you just proved that to yourself! Congratulations! :)
WOW - wishing I was 34 year younger now of course but that is so amazing. Your dad should be so proud and you will inspire a whole new generation to get out and do stuff.
Find some friends to go out and do it with and you will have a blast or perhaps a scout troop or something. I am going to show this to my scout troop so they can be inspired by you.
Obviously this is my channel but i assure you i have shown her every comment on YouTube and any forums i posted this on... She says "Thank you!". these comments are meaning a lot to her.. Thanks everyone for the support you are all showing my daughter!
Awesome! Excellent job, Ruby! You are an inspiration to many young ladies out there. You should be very proud! And the ending, "Dad, you're crazy!" Hahaha!
Nice job. That's a great accomplishment including learning to deal with some amount of solitude. I think it's benificial for everyone to face some level of challenge and discover life from another perspective.
Ruby you did awesome!!! I'm going to show this video to my girls.... Dad, Better watch out.. Ruby will have her own channel before you know it ...under your guidance of course heheheh
WOW!!! I think your Dad could learn a few things from YOU!!! HAHAHA!! You're so articulate. I don't know if you realize how important a point you made by singing to yourself and naming your shelter. Your own mind is your biggest enemy in a real situation! Once you succumb to loneliness and despair you're already done. You will greatly appreciate this in your personal growth. You have a devoted fan right here already!!! Great job Ruby. WE can learn a lot from YOU!! Awesome. Keep it up!
Excellent shelter- -or I mean Skelataur -- I wonder if given certain conditions it could breathe fire. Beautifully done. Yes, you are only a teenager, but you accomplished a great deal by working hard toward your goal and by overcoming both the tedium and the loneliness. You should be very proud (and I know your dad is). Those learned skills will be with you forever.
I just watched it via facebook, awesome job Ruby!!! I'm sure your Dad is very proud of you as I'm sure we all are too! Looks like she's just like her Dad. lol
