There is no such thing as "non-toxic" mercury. bluebeltOompa was messing with you. Also, mercury 'is' dangerous because of the fumes, but also because it will absorb through your skin.

The problem is not putting your fingers in the mercury, it's actually fun because it has such a surface tension but is very viscous. The problem with playing with mercury is that it vaporizes and then you inhale it and it stays in your for a long time. Back then it was played with a lot, has probably had negligable affects on most people, but it's still not safe.
