Gene Kelly is a legend. He was a great dancer, actor, singer, film director, producer, and choreographer. Truly one of the greatest, and might I add extremely good looking!
Gene Kelly should have been nominated for an Oscar. The man took the role of Hornbeck and did a fantastic job. He took a role that could easily have simply been snide and witty, but he made him a human character, especially considering his last long scene with Drummond. It's a great performance by Mr. Kelly.
Ah, ML, thou shouldst be living this hour! you'd rejoice in a target rich environement of Christianists, Femnists,, Multicults, Afrocentrists, other 'ists' I can't recollect, Pomos, and all scoundrels posing as patriots.PJ O'Rourke tries but only comes close. You would still have for your enjoyment the 'gaudy, coruscating show'.
The film is named Inherit the Wind, after the play of the same name. It concerns the Scopes Monkey Trial, with Clarance Darrow defending a teacher against William Jennings Bryant. E.K. Hornbeck, in this scene, represents the real-life journalist H.L. Mencken.
this is from a movie called Inherit the Wind and HL Mencken is portrayed by a character called EK Hornbeck (my favorite out of all the characters in the book)
Thanks for the upload. I don't think you could produce a movie with such a theme nowadays. Bigotry and political correctness are everywere. I admire Gene Kelly for accepting this role. He was a great man.
"As democracy is perfected, the office of President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."---H.L. Mencken, The Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920
I actually acted the part of Hornbeck in a summer camp production of the play...years before I discovered the wonderfully irascible Mencken himself!
Folks like Mencken, Ambrose Bierce, and other brilliant cynics are always a relief to return to after any contamination by the predigested pablum/prolefeed/Newspeak that inundates our lives and others around the world.
Gene Kelly had the best lines in this film and he delivered them all magnificently. Thanks for posting.

The sad thing is that journalists nowadays are just as wet as schoolteachers.
