I watched this entire video and found no tip. at all. you just told us what happens.. awesome.. i wanna learn how to sing without strain. i have an audition next week.
I honestly find it it impossible to keep my larynx neutral. It's like I'm physically incapable of keeping it from moving. Like there's a secret for success that I'm just not finding.
I've been singing a long time, and just recently my voice has been getting sore after I sing and I'm not sure why. I'm not doing anything different :(
Another way to tell if your straining or forcing your voice too much is if you have to clear your throat after singing. That's mother nature tell you! lol
@TheBxbrandon7 LOL hate to say but many singing teachers are about stories and not enough about teaching... That is why I sang with no instruction for years. I have decided to stop going to singing teachers and to go to a excellent local vocal coach with a good reputation for results. These online videos and cd's even are mostly just talking and warm ups with not enough instruction on actual technique to really sing. It's a lot of bull shit hate to say.
Please don't waste any time on singing success it's all bs seriously. Don't worry about compression you're voice already does it, don't worry about your tongue pushing down it's a way to sound more full on high notes if you want it's not bad at all. These guys at singing success are either extremely ignorant or are sociopaths
@MiaCries What tip helped you. It's okay to over compress listen to how Kurt Cobain sings listen to "Pennyroyal tea". It's also okay if the tongue pushes down that's how Scott Weiland of stone temple pilots sings, Matchbox 20, and Creed Sings. It's also okay if theres tension in the jaw etc it's called vocal anchoring
is there any video for nasal voice? I have little bit "nasal voice", this is what my teacher said to me, i don;t hear it much to be honest, I actually think it makes the voice sweeter. On the other hand, Callas, Streisant, and some super great singers had a naturaly nasal voice, is that a big of a problem?
@charisaob i know a kid at my school who has a natural nasal voice and it can effect your singing, it could stop you from singing notes for a long period of time. so maybe before you singing, breath hard, and scream at the pitch that nobody can hear.
another way of preventing strain is to rock your head side to side chile singing, and if you start to feel your head moving upwards then you are straining.
Tension is useful if used in a focused manner, strain is just gonna mess up your voice. Jesse elaborates on the difference between Tension vs. Strain which adds to what Shelby is teach us now :)
Not helpful, just explained 1 days worth of anatomy.
And little tips how to fix the problem, but you can't fully address everything about this and it is hard to understand how to make that one muscle relax. What, you breathe In more? Do you sing in a low volume?
Sometimes I wonder where and how these amazing Singing Success vocal coaches get their information. I've watched hundreds of videos and taken dozens of lessons and still their is constantly new information I'm learning.
@jasperdj i think she was talking about the tension in your diaphragm or your throat. but your entire body needs to be relaxed when you sing. so she could mean the whole body too.
Sweet. Thank you for the tip...never heard that one before. Keeping that muscle loose freed my voice up a lot. Instantly. Ya'll are the best there @ singing success!!!!
@aimi360 You actually shouldn't have pressure in your stomach. You can use your diaphragm for support by pulling in a little bit but you never want your stomach to be tense.
Um, so I pressed my thumb to that area and sang around a little, not utilizing any of my power but just kinda singing in my lower register and moving up everyone now and then, and it seemed to always be kinda hard but it would move around a lot like if I was singing a little higher it would shoot up a bit (I'm already practicing stuff to stop it from moving a lot) and when I was low it kinda just stayed down a little and felt like any other muscle.
I have never had singing lessons, yet people ask me to teach them. I wouldn't have a clue where to begin. I have alot of straining singing middle notes after a period of time. I call them 'middle notes' because low notes are fine, and belting high notes are my strength. It's that annoying low to middle range that hurts my throat after awhile, especially when covering rock music. I'm guessing my transition from the low notes is all wrong. Does anyone know what I am talking about/have any tips???
@michellekara I had the same problem. I found out that since I could belt high notes and give bottom to the lowest notes, my strain was due to a lack of airflow in the middle range. I used to put a lot of tension on my neck and jaw muscles to compensate for that inconsistency, but in the end it was just a matter of proper breathing. Check if that helps you out. It would be great if you could subscribe to singingsuccess TV anyways, they`ve got lots of extra tips regarding strain release.
@whodwellswithin oh okay, thanks for the reply. i figured it was something to do with breathing since I was finding myself out of breath. I will sign up, thanks.
@True Darkness Didn't she say? She said the muscles below your chin, when it's tight it means you're straining. This video doesn't tell much about that, there's another video I watched that's all about that muscle.
@TrueDarkness Okay no need to get angry....this is a business and they need to make some things cost money first of all and second of all to get rid of the strain look at Chris's video on singing without strain about sitting back in your chair with your chin down everything loosens up and your mind eventually clicks with that. Geesh people need to give these guys more credit see ya'll real soon I'm coming back down for more lessons!
YES that stupid muscle arggh it pisses me off!! I can sing well but my technique is so messed up! I do try my hardest - you know the basics, breathing diaphragm etc.. - but that muscle causes me to feel so much tension that many times I can't even sing through a song properly :( :( :(
I have tried the thumbs in the swallowing muscle and I can never keep it completely pliable when I sing. It always tenses up whether I am singing low or high.
V gd advice really helps with power and range and general well feeling after singing.. What ppl dnt get is tension with strain is bad news and compression come from slowly building the note
"Sing with NO Tension!" hat's has to be the most confusing thing a voice teacher can say! Singing Success is the only place I've ever heard mention that there is a NECESSARY tension (compression)! Before SS I always used to try to yawn when I would sing LOL! Fail....
