Here’s the thing, some of Satie’s music has a haunting quality that is timeless and transcends nationality or perceived ethnicity. As such, it is open (and lends itself) to individual interpretation. Janne performed it masterfully. Let me guess, you are a teacher. … and you know what they say about those who teach…
Hey there “jppmoorea” aka “super downer”. Wow, Satie is French…??? Thanks for clearing that up for us. Ya know, I had heard that his name at birth was “Alexander Satinopov” and that “Erik Satie” was just a stage name that his agent convinced him to adopt.
This music was in the film elegy.I thought it was a bartok folksong.Shocked to discover it's french and Satie. Wonderful here can't wait to hear him in my fave Chopin nocturne.Let's go see.
Ever since Hippie days, I love the Gymnopedies. For me, it was a mood, a pace of life to life by. This music is best listened to with some mellow weed.
Laid back, that's what I'm talking about. It's taking all the rat race, speed and anxiety out of life.
This music is better for people who would rather go through life as a hippo, rather than a lion. Life is more relaxed and aquatic. Much better than the frantic predatory chase.
do play the piano, and a little Sati too but never expertly of course! however, i beleive i do understand and 'feel' Sati perfectly enough to bow to Janne Mertanen's perfect rendition of this great composer's work in here.

Way too much rubato, which puts a pompous feel into the piece. I feel that even though these are emotional and eerie pieces, these aspects should be balanced with a touch of mischeviousness and wit that reflects the genius of Erik Satie, a sublime musical joker.
Satie is technically not very hard, so if you know how to play it you don't need the sheet music anymore. Playing without sheet music is better because then you'll listen much more to what you are playing in stead of watching your sheets. Just like Mertanen does.
I've got this in my grade 6 exam book and it's not that hard. Although the cd you get with it seems like those quick notes shouldn't be played as quick as Mertanen plays them, but then I think Satie's music is open to interpretation.
It's whatever age you are when you get to it? There are 8 grades and then I think it goes on to a diploma and then an honours. I myself am 21 but there are plenty of younger people who are grade 6 at least I'm sure.
What I love about Saties piece, and this man, they both are filled with such emotion. He feels the music. He's not just playing. LIke satie, when he wrote Gnossienne 1-6, he FELT it. Such power, such beautiful work. I'm in love.
The interesting thing is what the listener feels when he listen not some overall judgement that isnt needed. If you like it thats all cant see why people have to argue about if he is a genious or not.
I love the gnossiennes compared to the Gynopedies but i think that his "Crooked danses" were even better and pieces such as Poudre d'or are amazing aswell. He was an underated genius. I love the way most of his pieces have a nice simplicity to them and yet have a haunting quality in them.
WoW!!!Erik Satie was a Twisted Genius....his music sounds so simple and ODD but in a good way, sound so Atmospheric...vey envolving, this piece is much better than the Gymenopedie!!!
No, jrzy12, YOU are the one being judgmental here. Musical appreciation is of course subjective, and many people find Satie peculiar and eerie, however brilliant. You do not have a monopoly on artistic expression.
I played this some time ago. It was fun to read because it doesn't have bars! I was once in a concert where Mertanen played Chopin but I wasn't impressed...
where i can find this one he is payin and what genere exactly is this one,,,,i do have the one with a space vioce mix classic genere but not like he is playing
How about I have a two minute orgasm on your face? Who gives a fuck about what he looks like while he's playing? Simple people like you, that's who. It is a fucking beautiful piece of music, and you're worrying about how he looks? Wow...
The misterious and evanescence of Satie´s music is very well expressed in this Mertanen´s beautiful execution. A perfect sense of balance and introspection...
i played this song at one of my piano recitals. i pretty much rocked the joint. im not gunna lie. this song is off the hook. if only my pedal on my piano didnt squeek, and wasnt so noticable i would post a video.

"many people find Satie peculiar and eerie, however brilliant. "
When many people agree on something (which in this case has not been proven)
they can still all be wrong.
"YOU are the one being judgmental here"
Nope you simply are one of the herd mentality who can't understand that Satie is not odd...saying he is is exactly what I said..judgementality.
"You do not have a monopoly on artistic expression. "
I never said that I do.
