How many here have been to the Pennsic War? For those who do not know what the Pennsic War is. It's the largest Medieval Re-enactment War in the USA. I like to call it the "Valhallah" of the SCA.

(I don't expect kendoigorilla's really interested in the answer to this, but for other folks... :) ) I do historical fencing - rapier and longsword, as well as koryu kenjutsu. I've taken a lot from SCA armoured combat that has added to my understanding and practice of both of these (and vice-versa of course). SCA 'heavy combat ' is a practical fighting art, in the way that boxing is - skill is shown not by academic demonstration, but by measureable performance on the field.

I know of multiple members who are masters in fencing (Olympic class) and many teach. this is representative of middle ages combat NOT renaissance fencing. the group you're watching is WORLDWIDE not just in the states, Brittan included. We are the largest middle ages historical reenactment group in the world. circa 1066 to 1650. If you knew the amount of history uncovered by scholars in this group, you'd realise just how much you need to shut the hell up

@larjman Also, it basically some down to the people participating, if you are hit and you think it was akill shot, your dead... Some people were stronger armor than others, and therefore don't feel some hits as much as others

@calvin950 basically a "kill shot" is any strike to a vital area of the body (head or body) and as larjman explained, it goes by the fighter who receives the blows estimation of the strength of the shot, and they dictate whether the blow was a kill shot. likewise you lose arms/legs when this happens to those areas. sometimes its frustrating because you think your shot was a kill shot and some people protest the shot, but the rules say that if he feels it wasnt a kill shot, it wasnt.

@larjman Not true mate. I do HEMA and we spar with steel Longswords, Claymores, Bastard Swords, Rapier/Parrying Daggers, and Pikes. We were fencing jackets, fencing helmets and a mix of lacrosse gloves, arm and leg guards. Try it, it's pretty awesome.
