I do own an iPod but I don't like the fact that it is so "controlled". I will not be buying the next update because of that.
I will definitely buy the Amazon pad coming out. and I am betting that it will be pose real competition to iPad. I do Like and will be keeping my latest version of iPod Touch. It is small, convenient and I like the facetime.
@JoshuaB1968 if u like moving and just going places, ipod touch, if u like to pay the extra300-600 bucks and want a huge screen and u cant really put anywhere, get the ipad,
do you love wasting money? are you impressed by bright shinny objects whether or not they can actually perform well? are you easily brainwashed by advertising? do you have an emotional need to be seen as trendy by others? then we have the product for you---the iloser. it's $500. it has no camera. it doesn't have Flash. it doesn't run on a real operating system. it runs on that iphone system *%#@ing joke. you have to pay extra for 3G. it's the perfect device for losers. buy your iloser today!
.......(continued) You CAN remotely connect to a computer through apps like LOGMEIN. you Can load files onto the ipad and browse them in a "file system" and share them with apps like Air Sharing HD. You can connect the ipad to a mac and use it as a secondary/extended monitor through apps like iDisplay. so many of the things you (and i) want are actually possible. But dont get me wrong. i agree with you. The experience is still terribly restricted.
you do make good points, and i have to agree with you overall. The device is just to restricted. i want to be able to store/browse/make/downloads files on it and download programs onto it from the internet. You just cant do that normally, only work your way AROUND issues. BUT there are some things are wrong in this. As you know, the ipad will be getting iPhone OS 4 in the fall, which brings MULTITASKING.......(continued)
You do have some good points. Like you said that Flash can't be used on any of the Apple portable divices. Which annoys the HELL out of me by the way, because I have an iTouch and I absolutely hate not being able to use Flash on it's F-ING CRAZY! Aggghhhhh!
The iPad offers nothing new or unique. I can listen to music on an iPod, which is smaller and better. I can browse the Web and watch movies on-the-go on a laptop or at home on a TV. I can read books with books, which I prefer to e-books. I see the iPad, or another tablet, being big in classrooms because they can act as textbooks and what not, but I see no reason to buy one for personal use.
First, this was not meant to be a netbook replacement. Apple would cannibalize MacBook sales if it released a $500 netbook.
Second, from a techie's point of view- we expected it to essentially be a MacBook in a different form.
From the average Joe's point of view (basic usage- i.e. web surfing, youtube vids, checking email) this is a great product or even a netbook replacement for basic usage.
Its great for people who....dont know how to use a pc/mac. its a very basic easy to use interface. BUT its limited in use for the pros like myself. I have a iphone and its great for out and about use for the net but the ipad is just to big for portable use..and i mean if your waiting to see a doc or on the bus etc.. BUT its missing a Flash card slot. I have watched microsoft preview on the dual tablet, that looks awesome. BIG problem is the ipad is no better than the iphone but a bigger screen.
Multitasking will come in a software update later. And why would you want to multitask with push notifications? Have you seen how fast this thins is? Exit out of Safari, go to the other program, and get back on Safari in seconds. By the way, FLASH will lower the battery life from 10 hours to 1.5 hours. Get iWork to do work on it if you think it's not productive enough. Or don't get it if you can't afford it or don't want it, but don't say it sucks.
Think about this. Before I own my first iPhone, I used my personal laptop about 7 days a week and two or more hors every time. Now I'm using my laptop less than three days a week one or two hours each time. If the i´Pad is a bigger iPhone can you imagine what an iPad is?
Just a better way to make those things we do with our iPhone and much, much more.
It´s difficult for many people to understand what Apple iPad is; definitively is not a bigger iPhone although you can use it as one. iPad is a new species that will rise on time like many other Apple products did. But I could tell you it will be a success; why? because Apple have FOCUS and when a company have it, it succeed.
a desktop os belongs on a desktop computer or a laptop, that have keyboards and pointing devices. a touch-based mobile os belongs on touch screen mobile devices. Apple didn't want to recreate a laptop, they wanted to add a third category so people wouldn't have to always carry around their laptops, they could take this for most of the basics tasks we do on the go, that required more screen real estate than an iphone or ipod touch.
Lack78 will you do a talk on the MacBook pro 2.26gh vs the new MacBook pro base model when it comes out , thanks for all the time and effort you put in to help us all.
its an over sized ipod touch with no mic no camara 2 or 3 new features for just 460 dolars more. that's a failure... i rather buy an iphone it haves more features than the an over sized ipod touch. lol
depends how you see it, i dont see the ipad as a replacement for my laptop, im looking at a device so mi mom can sen emails , view videos and photos in a easy way.
besides 10 hours so i can read a book or listen music, is perfect for me cuz i travel a lot
It's not designed for technically-minded people. What Apple didn't say was that it's our parents that will be using these. Think how perfect its simplicity is for the elderly, and then apply the same to children. Huge markets.
This device really is a big let down, what can it do that an ipod touch cannot? iBooks? if i really want an eReader i will go with the nook or the kindle seeing as books for both devices are significantly cheaper. If Apple follows any of the rumours on its products it must have known that not only would this device not shock us, but that it would would disappoint. Who really needs a big ipod touch i just dont see the market for this at all, here's hope iPad 2.0 is everything we hoped for.
Here is the problem as I see it with your view of the iPad. You had certain expectations for the iPad that weren't fulfilled. I too was disappointed initially but now my view is starting to change. I'm still disappointed that it doesn't have a camera. But, if apple put OSX on the tablet, how would you make use of this on a tablet? I don't see flash as a big downfall. I did initially, but when you realize that Adobe's product is CPU intensive. Its a trade off. Flash, 2 hours of use at max
I think it is your mind which is restricted. you want apple to make a netbook. so follow everybody and what you are used to.
I think if they attach a bluetooth little device which could have a microphone and speaker, it would already be a phone of whichever size you want, with your ipad in bag, etc. i think it's good they abstract from everybody
@helunia its just a question of developing the ipad now, really. what they did is they showed it too the world a little bit too son, just as they did with ipod before iphone. but once they develop it it's gonna work.
The device is maybe restrited but the iphone is restricted too. After jailbreaking u discover the amazing capabilities of the phone. So just give some time to the developers/hackers to find a way to make it as usable as a PC.
Just remember how sad is a no-jailbroken iphone and u will be able to predict a good future to this device.
Sure, jailbreak it and add a USB port or more, a microphone, and a webcam. If you're a programer, you can create drivers for each camera model out there.... This is not a PC...
Does it come with some kind of sheath or cover? I would want something to protect the screen when not in use. A cover with a hinge would be nice so it can't be misplaced. Might as well put a keyboard on the cover.... back to a laptop/netbook.
I agree with your review of the Ipad. Question from a not very savvy computer user: Can you use this device as a drawing tablet or does it have writing recognition? It seems to me that a Pad like this should have that capability. Otherwise I would just continue to use a laptop or netbook.
Apple is not developing in this direction, they do not want a stylus to be required.
Stylus is compatible, so the device will be able to be used as a Cintiq replacement, though not with all the features the Cintiq has.
Apple or somebody should partner with Wacom to get their technology into their tablets. Wouldn't hurt!
I agree that typing is this devices weak spot. However. it has compensating strong spots as a media player and a game pad -- stuff like Civilization is going to rock on this.
I'm a techie and I'm only disappointed by the XGA resolution, I was hoping for at least 180DPI.
People complaining about no camera or external card slots are rather clueless techies.
Which way should the camera point? If you can't answer that question, or you think it should swivel, then you're not in a position to be on the iPad design team.
Memory expansion is a bridge too far. Complicates the user experience too much. It's nice if you're a techie, but normal people don't need this.
I agree. Good points and vid. So many talks, so many expectations and what? the same stupid compass app? Apple events once were a miracle to reveal. Always. The last time it happened when MacBook Air was presented. SnowLeo and now this -- obvious fake silly things in a wrap of "Amazing, Incredible, Awesome" mantra, a movie from Apple which talks us in to BUY it no matter what. Do they really think we'll buy everithing with Apple logo on it?
For me what people seem to be missing is that the iPad is going to be all about the Applications developed by 3rd party companies. As far as netbook are concerned, I am guessing that put side by side to an iPad with all the apps you desire, the iPad will out perform. When the first iPhone came out there was so many similar bashing statements made about it and now, after a few years people, including myself who hated the iPhone initially, swear by iPhone. Flash I think is old, HTML 5 is new.
i was expecting more. not having a camera is just horrible. I wish it had flash. I like the battery and ibook. Also, i was hoping to have some sort of typing thing other than the notes app so i could use it for class discussions, even if i had to pay 50$ more for it. All in all, its a let down that i'll probably get since i've wanted a kindle for awhile. Although i might wait for 2nd generation since apple has a way to make awesome 2nd generations (like the ipod touch)
You've hit the nail on the head. Not much point in making such a restrictive device just like the iphone, ipod touch. I think they new this was not what people wanted but put it out there expecting people to like it in the long run. With updates and so on. Something along the lines of a net book would have been far better! Over very disappointed
What you didn't mention is that iBooks is US only at launch which was the biggest dissapointment for me.
Other let downs for me obviously no multitasking, no camera....
Flash for me not a biggy, I've been an iphone user since launch and I think only once in those three years I've thought "damn, if only I had flash".
Other than these small gripes I think the device looks pretty good for what it is and the pricing (assuming of course that the price is converted nicely over to the uk)
You've got to look at the iphone as an example. The first iPhone lacked many many standard features but the firmware upgrades and huge app catalog have made it what a great device it is today.
I think by the 3rd revision of this thing by the time there are a couple of cameras and multitasking etc everyone will have forgotten what a dissapointment this was.
The real disapointment, for me at least, is no stylus. I wanted this thing to work like a digital canvas, with brushes/paints all that stuff built in. That would be sick, maybe it's just me though...
Dave good video but I disagree. This thing is limited no doubt, but really so is the iPhone, yet i don't feel limited at all on it. I don't need flash, and the lack of a camera is kind of disapointing but it's not that bad. Who knows what they'll bring to this in the future. I know the developers/hackers (jail breakers) will come to the rescue. And apple will release alot better features for this thing in the future, they always do
Look, Apple is allowing adobe to make flash based apps. They're just not letting flash run on safari because it's a cpu hog. Most of the internet sites that use flash to display their content will probably do so through their own apps on the ipad, just not through the safari browser. Those flash based apps will run through open GL so it's less of a CPU hog. Also, HTML 5 will soon take over flash as the standard so you won't need flash.
This is going to be THE gaming device of Christmas. I've got 4 games I'm working on for release this year. The 3D performance of this device is phenomenal and the big touch surface opens up an new frontier of gaming.
As I like saying Apple's tablet is a plate not a frying pan. It's to consume, not produce.
Why do people need a better OS for the iPad?? Do they need to run photoshop or full version of other softwares in such a small device? The iPad has limitation but that is what the iPad is for. It will give you a better experience in web browsing, photo sharing, movie, music, book, magazine, etc., than a netbook. If you want more, go for a real laptop!!! I strongly believe that the iPad will not die in the market but will not be a stellar either. It will capture some groups of people.
Yes, a macbook pro is too big to have a camera, other than the PhotoBooth app, which is a novelty that nobody I knows uses as an actual camera.
As for having an iSight, the issue with a handheld tablet camera is initially aiming the camera at the subject and keeping the subject in frame. On a desktop or laptop this isn't an issue given the stability of the platform.
Focus on the god damn product, not the company. I hate when people say they don't want a device simply because they "hate" Apple. That is just a retarded reason why NOT to get any device.
What you have said is all true 110% i was considering of buying it but after seeing this video i have now realised i could get more use out of a new dslr than the ipad
I don't like this iPad, it won't replace any netbook, because it doesn't run normal OS (Snow Leopard), there's no multitasking, no USB input, no CD drive... Though I wouldn't buy a netbook, because they are really slow and made from cheap plastic parts. Better idea is to buy 13inch laptop Vaio from Sony (if you want Windows) or MacBook from Apple. 13 laptop is small, portable device which does it all unlike iPad which is nothing but giant iPod Touch.
is there gonna be any good news about the macbooks, or the iphone? and as for the ipad from where I see its its not a tablet or a netbook at all... IT is a different device altogether... think about the word, PAD... a note pad used to be what we write on, this is basically something to read on, maybe do a little iwork here and there, pass your time... kind of alike an overblown ipod touch if u may, but its sole purpose is NOT music, It seems perfect for my backpack.
with apple its all about the user experiences, and the iPad offers a great one. A Netbook may be able to multitask but it still a bad experiences, cramp keyboard, small trackpad, small screen and crappy parts. If you think of the iPad as a computer then youre going to hate, but if you think of it as new take on computing and embrace it then youll love it. The iPad does everything the average user needs it to do in a new and better way, the iPad is not your grandmothers pentium 2 PC.
I know it's not what most of us wanted apple to provide to us, but this device will be really nice for some people. This is great for people in business who just need the internet with them at all times in a lightweight, thin, no-fuss package. I am interested in seeing how well it types, as it would be a convenient thing for me to have at work and school.
safari always crashes with flash, but thanks to SNOW LEOPARD: CRASH RESISTANCE saves the webpage, flash kils my cpu, ive seen mac pro cpu working hard because of watching a youtube video based on flash...i can go on and on and on about flash. yes flash is going places, but so is html5. i mean vimeo, and youtube now have html5 videos !! so I DONT CARE ABOUT FLASH ONE BIT !
Some valid points here. For me the iPad reminds me of when the iPod touch was first released; soon after the software was upgraded and we saw the iPhone 3G and now 3GS. So I think I will hold out for the next generation iPad. Ebooks wont work for me; I like to pass on books I read. Magazine subs would work however. Oh and I need iChat to work. Otherwise I am happy to use my iPhone and macbook pro as portable devices.
I think the potential is definitely there, whatever they announced on wednesday people were going to be disappointed, I think we will see what developers can do with the device, creating desktop style applications. I also think that by the time this is launched iphone/ipad OS 4.0 will be released and I feel that this will incorporate multitasking and possibly some sort of file management system. with regards to a camera, I have a feeling that the iPad will have an optional external camera
i keep thinking about how to use it directly with my pc.
anyone using protool, logic or any program that uses a mixing board, it would be awesome. anyone who draws or makes comic books will find a use for it. i love my ipod touch not only because of the games, wifi and music, but because of the way itworks WITH my macbook. a big version of that is worth getting for me.
it will be worth it for others as a web-enabled e-book reader with the option of being a picture frame.
you know why i like/love ur videos becoz u say truth not like soldierknowsbest or john4lakers they just talk that apple is best apple is best ........... i m apple fan and i like its hardware, software, new design n eveything but this ipad nothing new for me...........
I believe that apple shouldve compared this tablet with the ereader market. However when you think about it, for this price it is a lot better than the kindle DX. Yes there are many things which it lacks, however it was all this hype that made us think of this device as some sort of mystery tablet which would have everything that one could possibly imagine in a computer.
yes... its a companion device.. not supposed to replace your laptop or desktop, just a gadget to play around with, if it gets an upgrade with a built in cam, ill be getting it for sure.. i love skype, and i love to skype on campus, but its not convenient to pull out the macbook in the student center... i think its nice fun fresh idea that ipod touch users should consider
It's an oversized iPod touch, it has no new features other than Iwork apps, that's it! No camera, no cd drive, same features as iPod touch, it's just dumb and a waist of money. I'd rather get a notebook for the same price with more features. I could buy a cheap laptop for the same price with more features. OMG, what a waist!
It seems to be a product designed for the casual user. Functionality wise, I don't see that it's doing anything that the Macbook Air can't do better. The only neat thing is that it plays apps and has the iBook functionality. *shrug* As someone who uses RAM hogging digital design/film editing programs, it doesn't appeal to me. I'm still waiting for the new Macbooks, if there are any!
Thanks for the update vid Dave. I agree with all your points. This device is a bit of a head scratcher for me. At least there are the MBP updates to look forward to. Cant wait to get my 15" MBP for school.
this would have been a good device if it had done two or three things a mac nor iphone/ipod can do. the bookstore is okay but there should be a camera, where i can flick homescreens by waving my hand to the right, thus far getting rid of more fingerprints. app developers would kill with that feature
I was really disappointed with the ipad what they could have done is bring out what was relesed as a base model and also make a higher spec one with a slimmed down os x and camera and usb,, i would have paid a bit more for a fully usable tablet but not a big ipod touch. They say that 499 is a good price but i cannot justify that much for a device that is only good for reading, email, and web surfing and some games
i am a little disappointed but im still going to buy the ipad wifi+3G 64GB. its missing alot but its still cool and something new to the mac family. im shure that thing can only get better for the ipad in the future. and you dont know how much you like something untill you try it for yourself.
all the ipod apps plus a whole new app store just for ipad means that by the time the 2nd gen one comes out you'll be able to do almost anything with it. Think about running certain apps on it. Think about apps built specifically for it. Think about how many apps you could have with 16 gigs. You can run tge skype app now. As long as it can save anything it's good for anyone not doing processor intensive work, but those people already have macs already
I totally agree with your point of view about the new ipad device. This has to be THE STUPIDEST device ever created on this earth. What a waste of time, production and resources. This device is not practical in anyway possible!
i'm happy that it had so much hype. That pressured pc manufacturers like HP and MSI to come out with some awesome tablet prototypes to steal the ipad's thunder. They run things like android and linux as opposed to iphone OS :P
you are one of the few people here who really knows what what the iPad is . others don't understand. All they see is a giant ipod, but don't understand that this is a hell of a lot faster and more powerful so more graphics intensive and memory intensive apps will be developed.
Dude, if it's ridiculous to type on this then it's ridiculous to type on any tablet. This tablet just happens to have the best keyboard and touchscreen to date. And iPad is $20 more than the high end kindle so it definitely is going to catch on.
Lack - What is the point of tablet PCs anyways? How much can be done with running OSX or Windows 7 on portable computers with such low specifications? I wish that they would have included a camera, and more abilities for the iPad. It just seems too much like a large iPhone... We will just have to see what will be included.
I understand why people are disappointed with the iPad, but I personally love it! Also, I doubt that the iPad that we saw yesterday will be the one that we see in 60 days. Apple didn't talk about everything that the deice does, and the iPad was only running iPhone OS 3.2. I'm sure that Apple will announce iPhone OS 4.0; both for the iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch. One of the very few people that got to try it mentioned that whenintheContactsapp,he tapped the"Add Photo"andtherewasbutton:takepicture
the M11x lowest range model will cost $799 and as they said it would be sub $1000 at CES I presume their highest range model will be $999.99 I know at that price point you could go for a normal laptop but that isn't what I want. (I wanted a powerful netbook and I'm getting my wish) I was hoping for I suppose something similar from apple all in a tablet (excluding the gaming) giving me the ability to multi task etc with absolute ease while running seamlessly. So I think we all expected to much.
Not sure if my last comment showed up but they said this would be the ''netbook killer'' yet the M11x is coming out for cheaper than their higher end and mid range 3G Enabled iPads. The M11x is going to totally blow any claims apple made that is for sure.
It will be a dual core gaming monster that can handle things most mid range pc's can do and then some. If you can afford it that's definitely the way I would go (which I will be) a small netbook that can truly do 3-4 things at a time.
hey dave, you're absolutely right... here some thoughts:
1. the only argument to get the ipad is to use it mainly as an ebook reader
2. newspaper-industries wanted a popular apple-device to start making money with journalism again but i don't see how it works if u can easily browse the web to get the news
3. apple did a good job on the iwork for ipad
4. it really doesn't make sense to carry around or buy the ipad if your owning the ipod touch or a macbook or both
i think when the tablet gets a few ports like sd card, and an os update that allows multitasking, and a camera, it will be a viable replacement for what most use a laptop for. i think a mac or pc at home, an ipad in your backpack, and an iphone in your pocket will be great for alot of people.
i think apple should get up of the lazy asses and stop milking the touch screen device cow and start focusing on the mac again the device that made them who they are. where the fuck is me macbook pro refresh apple where the fuck is it? fuck u apple fuck u
Wrong; The reasoning behind Apple's success is the advancements made in OSX. OSX currently is by far much faster than the Windows family of operating systems and extremely stable, while providing an amazing UI. Boot Camp was introduced with Leopard (10.5) - One of the more amazing operating systems, with a whole new set of computers using intel processors. Boot camp merely attracted those who preferred the Mac operating systems, yet desire PC gaming. It just enlarged its market.
Thus my argument is that people do not want to run Windows on Boot Camp for the operating system itself... but for certain windows exclusive applications. That's all that the Windows operating systems really has over Apple operating systems. As the Apple market share gradually increases, more companies will seek to provide Mac compatibility.
they just released an iMac, no? And that Quad core i7 variant is a real powerhouse, right? What's the problem then? So they didn't announce new MacBook Pros, are you ready to screw Apple over for not adding an LED display to MacBook Pros and maybe a slightly bigger HDD or SDD option
i didn't mean that i hate apple i hated that they didn't update their macbook pro line, that's the product that fit's my needs because i'm about to go to college and i heard they were about to update them and that's why i didn't get one yet
so 60 percent of people don't like it so YOU are changing your mind??? When are you guys gonna get it through your simple heads that an apple netbook would cost 1500 dollars, three times the price.
Just ask yourself ONE question, what do you do while on the road? Surf the web, watch movies, email, word processing...the ipad does all this
I am with the 30 percent of people who are HAPPY with this 500 dollar giant ipod touch
i know that but without the mac the company would have died years ago thats what i was trying to say. even though they own such little market share that doesn't mean they don't have good products they are just over priced and thats why some people don't buy them.
If only some one at Apple had Googled or YT'd this MadTV comedy skit from 2006 maybe they would of called it something better like iTablet or even iSlate.
i think if they were going to go with the iphone OS it would have been great if this screen could also serve as a monitor to say a mac mini, then I would think this is worth it. I'll have to see how this turns out and mayve if I can test it out it might change my mind but I'lll probably be buying a Win7 netbook instead
My mam wants one, and it'd suit her. But all she does is go on eBay and check emails.. some other stuff, and she thinks netbooks are too small. But she won't be getting one for quite a while, she just got an eBook I guess..
I would never buy one for me though, I'd just get a netbook and hackintosh it :D
Apple always does this to make more money. They hold back on key features that they could of included on a first generation device, then they include those features on the second or third generation so people who didn't buy it the first time because of the lack, then go and buy the 2 or 3rd gen. Then the schmucks who already brought the first gen are forced to buy the 2, 3rd gen. If Apple can put a camera on a tiny mini they could of put it on the ipad. Doggonit.
Chris Pirillo (Lockergnome) got it right, don't knock it till you try it. I think that ipad as a lot of potential. Its just another form factor which some might find cumbersome but others might like using the internet like that. How many times surfing the web on my iphone did I wish it were bigger.
If the Courier is what that video showed, watch out Apple.
And Apple says they have been working on this for years my ass! I bet it was made in a couple of days its just a useless device that apple released prematurely and make a quick $. iPad is a horrible name and common iphone OS 3.2 I have a touch i can do all that the damn iPad does.

Good video Dave! A few points...
Just my two cents.

BIG problem is the ipad is no better than the iphone but a bigger screen.
zerolimits456 2 years ago
Multitasking will come in a software update later. And why would you want to multitask with push notifications? Have you seen how fast this thins is? Exit out of Safari, go to the other program, and get back on Safari in seconds. By the way, FLASH will lower the battery life from 10 hours to 1.5 hours. Get iWork to do work on it if you think it's not productive enough. Or don't get it if you can't afford it or don't want it, but don't say it sucks.

This is a new category. CATEGORY. And this will be successful... I bet as successful as the iPod in a few years.

But I could tell you it will be a success; why? because Apple have FOCUS and when a company have it, it succeed.
hernando46 2 years ago
a desktop os belongs on a desktop computer or a laptop, that have keyboards and pointing devices. a touch-based mobile os belongs on touch screen mobile devices. Apple didn't want to recreate a laptop, they wanted to add a third category so people wouldn't have to always carry around their laptops, they could take this for most of the basics tasks we do on the go, that required more screen real estate than an iphone or ipod touch.

besides 10 hours so i can read a book or listen music, is perfect for me cuz i travel a lot

worst device ever. it's utterly useless. if it doesnt support flash then its not a web browser. jobs is losing the plot.
Hoohaaboo 2 years ago
It's not designed for technically-minded people. What Apple didn't say was that it's our parents that will be using these. Think how perfect its simplicity is for the elderly, and then apply the same to children. Huge markets.

the iPad is a disapointment.
wow. It can't even Multitask. That sucks! We need flash so we can view flash whatever.
Its like the iPad is rushed into the market and its forgetting important pieces of it. Like Flash, USB, etc.
Whats the point of this device anyway? Hardly any upgrades.
btw Dave good video!
infinitypark003 2 years ago

I think if they attach a bluetooth little device which could have a microphone and speaker, it would already be a phone of whichever size you want, with your ipad in bag, etc. i think it's good they abstract from everybody
helunia 2 years ago
@helunia its just a question of developing the ipad now, really. what they did is they showed it too the world a little bit too son, just as they did with ipod before iphone. but once they develop it it's gonna work.
helunia 2 years ago
The device is maybe restrited but the iphone is restricted too. After jailbreaking u discover the amazing capabilities of the phone. So just give some time to the developers/hackers to find a way to make it as usable as a PC.
Just remember how sad is a no-jailbroken iphone and u will be able to predict a good future to this device.
kompressor01 2 years ago
Sure, jailbreak it and add a USB port or more, a microphone, and a webcam. If you're a programer, you can create drivers for each camera model out there.... This is not a PC...

Does it come with some kind of sheath or cover? I would want something to protect the screen when not in use. A cover with a hinge would be nice so it can't be misplaced. Might as well put a keyboard on the cover.... back to a laptop/netbook.
takforalt 2 years ago
I agree with your review of the Ipad. Question from a not very savvy computer user: Can you use this device as a drawing tablet or does it have writing recognition? It seems to me that a Pad like this should have that capability. Otherwise I would just continue to use a laptop or netbook.
takforalt 2 years ago
Apple is not developing in this direction, they do not want a stylus to be required.
Stylus is compatible, so the device will be able to be used as a Cintiq replacement, though not with all the features the Cintiq has.
Apple or somebody should partner with Wacom to get their technology into their tablets. Wouldn't hurt!
I agree that typing is this devices weak spot. However. it has compensating strong spots as a media player and a game pad -- stuff like Civilization is going to rock on this.
tachikaze222 2 years ago
Among the tech world, yes it is somewhat of a disappointment- when you truly analyze it. To the average joe- its awesome.
Jferrari427 2 years ago
I'm a techie and I'm only disappointed by the XGA resolution, I was hoping for at least 180DPI.
People complaining about no camera or external card slots are rather clueless techies.
Which way should the camera point? If you can't answer that question, or you think it should swivel, then you're not in a position to be on the iPad design team.
Memory expansion is a bridge too far. Complicates the user experience too much. It's nice if you're a techie, but normal people don't need this.
tachikaze222 2 years ago
Thanks, this is a really great video. And I agree 100%
fleetfeet2004 2 years ago
ZeeYehoo 2 years ago
For me what people seem to be missing is that the iPad is going to be all about the Applications developed by 3rd party companies. As far as netbook are concerned, I am guessing that put side by side to an iPad with all the apps you desire, the iPad will out perform. When the first iPhone came out there was so many similar bashing statements made about it and now, after a few years people, including myself who hated the iPhone initially, swear by iPhone. Flash I think is old, HTML 5 is new.
iharrison30 2 years ago
i was expecting more. not having a camera is just horrible.
Ventghost 2 years ago
You've hit the nail on the head. Not much point in making such a restrictive device just like the iphone, ipod touch. I think they new this was not what people wanted but put it out there expecting people to like it in the long run. With updates and so on. Something along the lines of a net book would have been far better! Over very disappointed
jamaic1aboy2 2 years ago
Why won't they just make a Netbook with OSX...... Its such a simple thing to do and we all know it would sell.....
surferstapleton 2 years ago 2
What you didn't mention is that iBooks is US only at launch which was the biggest dissapointment for me.
Other let downs for me obviously no multitasking, no camera....
Flash for me not a biggy, I've been an iphone user since launch and I think only once in those three years I've thought "damn, if only I had flash".
Other than these small gripes I think the device looks pretty good for what it is and the pricing (assuming of course that the price is converted nicely over to the uk)
joealanjones 2 years ago
You've got to look at the iphone as an example. The first iPhone lacked many many standard features but the firmware upgrades and huge app catalog have made it what a great device it is today.
I think by the 3rd revision of this thing by the time there are a couple of cameras and multitasking etc everyone will have forgotten what a dissapointment this was.
joealanjones 2 years ago
IPAD is great
candyee88 2 years ago
The real disapointment, for me at least, is no stylus. I wanted this thing to work like a digital canvas, with brushes/paints all that stuff built in. That would be sick, maybe it's just me though...
Zombiebrainstew 2 years ago
Dave good video but I disagree. This thing is limited no doubt, but really so is the iPhone, yet i don't feel limited at all on it. I don't need flash, and the lack of a camera is kind of disapointing but it's not that bad. Who knows what they'll bring to this in the future. I know the developers/hackers (jail breakers) will come to the rescue. And apple will release alot better features for this thing in the future, they always do
Zombiebrainstew 2 years ago
Look, Apple is allowing adobe to make flash based apps. They're just not letting flash run on safari because it's a cpu hog. Most of the internet sites that use flash to display their content will probably do so through their own apps on the ipad, just not through the safari browser. Those flash based apps will run through open GL so it's less of a CPU hog. Also, HTML 5 will soon take over flash as the standard so you won't need flash.

"what limited games you ~can~ play"
The HELL?
This is going to be THE gaming device of Christmas. I've got 4 games I'm working on for release this year. The 3D performance of this device is phenomenal and the big touch surface opens up an new frontier of gaming.
As I like saying Apple's tablet is a plate not a frying pan. It's to consume, not produce.
tachikaze222 2 years ago
Why do people need a better OS for the iPad?? Do they need to run photoshop or full version of other softwares in such a small device? The iPad has limitation but that is what the iPad is for. It will give you a better experience in web browsing, photo sharing, movie, music, book, magazine, etc., than a netbook. If you want more, go for a real laptop!!! I strongly believe that the iPad will not die in the market but will not be a stellar either. It will capture some groups of people.

The device is too big for a camera. People wanting a camera don't understand the platform.
tachikaze222 2 years ago
is a macbook pro too big for a camera? whats stopping the iPad having Isight? :)
Dan7aylor 2 years ago
Yes, a macbook pro is too big to have a camera, other than the PhotoBooth app, which is a novelty that nobody I knows uses as an actual camera.
As for having an iSight, the issue with a handheld tablet camera is initially aiming the camera at the subject and keeping the subject in frame. On a desktop or laptop this isn't an issue given the stability of the platform.
Handheld tablet, on the other hand . . .

13 laptop is small, portable device which does it all unlike iPad which is nothing but giant iPod Touch.

okay I NEED TO KNOW...
is there gonna be any good news about the macbooks, or the iphone? and as for the ipad from where I see its its not a tablet or a netbook at all...

Chillash007 2 years ago
I think the potential is definitely there, whatever they announced on wednesday people were going to be disappointed, I think we will see what developers can do with the device, creating desktop style applications. I also think that by the time this is launched iphone/ipad OS 4.0 will be released and I feel that this will incorporate multitasking and possibly some sort of file management system. with regards to a camera, I have a feeling that the iPad will have an optional external camera

anyone using protool, logic or any program that uses a mixing board, it would be awesome. anyone who draws or makes comic books will find a use for it. i love my ipod touch not only because of the games, wifi and music, but because of the way itworks WITH my macbook. a big version of that is worth getting for me.

I believe that apple shouldve compared this tablet with the ereader market. However when you think about it, for this price it is a lot better than the kindle DX. all the ipod apps plus a whole new app store just for ipad means that by the time the 2nd gen one comes out you'll be able to do almost anything with it. Think about running certain apps on it. Think about apps built specifically for it. Think about how many apps you could have with 16 gigs. You can run tge skype app now. As long as it can save anything it's good for anyone not doing processor intensive work, but those people already have macs already

Lack - What is the point of tablet PCs anyways? How much can be done with running OSX or Windows 7 on portable computers with such low specifications? I understand why people are disappointed with the iPad, but I personally love it! Also, I doubt that the iPad that we saw yesterday will be the one that we see in 60 days. Apple didn't talk about everything that the deice does, and the iPad was only running iPhone OS 3.2. I'm sure that Apple will announce iPhone OS 4.0; both for the iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch. the M11x lowest range model will cost $799 and as they said it would be sub $1000 at CES I presume their highest range model will be $999.99 I know at that price point you could go for a normal laptop but that isn't what I want. (I wanted a powerful netbook and I'm getting my wish) I was hoping for I suppose something similar from apple all in a tablet (excluding the gaming) giving me the ability to multi task etc with absolute ease while running seamlessly. So I think we all expected to much.
electronicxbox 2 years ago
Not sure if my last comment showed up but they said this would be the ''netbook killer'' yet the M11x is coming out for cheaper than their higher end and mid range 3G Enabled iPads. The M11x is going to totally blow any claims apple made that is for sure.
It will be a dual core gaming monster that can handle things most mid range pc's can do and then some. If you can afford it that's definitely the way I would go (which I will be) a small netbook that can truly do 3-4 things at a time.

i think when the tablet gets a few ports like sd card, and an os update that allows multitasking, and a camera, it will be a viable replacement for what most use a laptop for. i think a mac or pc at home, an ipad in your backpack, and an iphone in your pocket will be great for alot of people.

i think apple should get up of the lazy asses and stop milking the touch screen device cow and start focusing on the mac again the device that made them who they are. where the fuck is me macbook pro refresh apple where the fuck is it? fuck u apple fuck u

made them who they are? they were nothing before the ipod, they had 3 percent of the market before the ipod came out.
even then they had only 4 percent of the market until the iphone came out, then they had 5 percent.
it was not until they started running windows when they grew into the 7 percent market they now have
so the mac didnt make them, the ipod did
thats why the company is not "apple computers", they changed their name and dropped the "computer"

Dave
so 60 percent of people don't like it so YOU are changing your mind??? When are you guys gonna get it through your simple heads that an apple netbook would cost 1500 dollars, three times the price.
Just ask yourself ONE question, what do you do while on the road? Surf the web, watch movies, email, word processing...the ipad does all this
I am with the 30 percent of people who are HAPPY with this 500 dollar giant ipod touch
johnmonk66 2 years ago 2
i know that but without the mac the company would have died years ago thats what i was trying to say. even though they own such little market share that doesn't mean they don't have good products they are just over priced and thats why some people don't buy them.

Ok people time to make a Linux based tablet lets get going. Lets show the boys in Cupertino how it's done.

Could they not have added a few ports, and a simple OS that can use multiple apps? If they had, it would have been great!

@CloneHat

The only good thing I can imagine coming out of this, is a jailbroken iPad. Although, without the camera, it will still completely suck.
pavornoct 2 years ago
My mam wants one, and it'd suit her. But all she does is go on eBay and check emails.. some other stuff, and she thinks netbooks are too small. But she won't be getting one for quite a while, she just got an eBook I guess..
I would never buy one for me though, I'd just get a netbook and hackintosh it :D

I find the iPad really the best gadget that Apple ever envented.

This has been flagged as spam show
And Apple says they have been working on this for years my ass! I bet it was made in a couple of days its just a useless device that apple released prematurely and make a quick $. iPad is a horrible name and common iphone OS 3.2 I have a touch i can do all that the damn iPad does.
