Jcdyer3 has it right, just cause you have talent doesn't necessarily mean you'll be beloved and heralded as the next big thing. You have to have that certain something that calls to an audience and makes them pay attention to you. Bria obviously has that and more, check out her playing in Glenn Crytzer's Blue Rhythm Band. She's really coming into her own now.
I guess my point is, nobody asks if Jerron Paxton is the next Fats Waller, or Phil Cosentino is the next coming of Artie Shaw. They're great musicians, and people enjoy that. There are great musicians all over who won't make it, male & female, attractive & ugly, b/c they don't know how to book gigs, sell albums, excite audiences. There's more to musical success than raw talent, and Bria's success has less to do with her looks than her ability to captivate audiences, but the talent is there, too.
Sure, she's OK - but is she the next coming of Louis or Bix or Al Hirt? Naw, but she does have assets none of them had, and the old dirty men of the STJS have sure to noticed.
An authority on trad? Could be, hard to tell.
The thing that sticks in my craw is that there are hundreds - maybe thousands - of unbelievably great trumpet players that will never get the attention 'cause they ain't got the looks. If it brings more people to the music, I guess it's OK, it's just not the best...
@ericharoldburger Because being a woman is such an advantage when trying to break into jazz? I mean look at all those underqualified female trumpeters taking jobs away from all the good male trumpeters, like... Hmm. Nope. I got nothing.
This woman's got talent. She doesn't have to be the next Louis Armstrong to deserve the acclaim she's getting. She plays good music. She knows her shit. Enjoy it.
This is classic Jazz with a capital C !! Bria blows me away with her talent, and the Jim Cullum Jazz band is number one in my books! Thanks so much for these postings,,,It sure gives an old gal like me hours of pure enjoyment!
thanks for sharing - what a great trumpet player!
