  • so why cant i facebook this?

  • Correct!!! I joined an Irish band (GaelicMishap) that plays traditional Irish songs and Celtic rock. It is great and the music we put out is super! Glad I retired!!!!

  • Its quite the commonality that after folks retire, they pass on shortly thereafter because they stop working. May I suggest to those of us who will retire to get into a band and play the rest of your life! Its a mighty fine work.

  • It's quite common that when people retire, they pass a short time after that. I would recommend that all of us who retire get into this kind of stuff! Work at its finest!

  • wow that;s the one way's

  • I fished with Poncho and his brother Ben a while back on a six-pak boat, . This is a stand up individual, pure class on or off stage. He was a straight cat, never once brought up the fact that he was big in Latin Jazz. I never knew until about six months later about his fame.. He was just a fisherman as I, no better, no worse. I love him for that..

  • @jesamani75 Yes, that's the "one-ways" in Norwalk, CA... tough area, we had 3 armed cops walking behind us to help keep the crew from being mugged.

    //dc

  • YEAH ! ! !! ! Wow, I like the latin version even better than the funk version, haha. Way to go Poncho.

  • Should this be an average-music band, we'd say "they're really rocking" by the way they sound (actually, they sound just great great).. However, in Spanish we'd say "TIENEN JICAMO, PARNAH!". Man, these cats have really GOT IT! God bless the talent of these folks.

  • Actually it's a Herbie Hancock song

  • Yes, that's a great tune and Poncho plays it well, but it's not his; this song was player first by Mongo Santamaria's (Poncho was his student).

  • I love this song, our jazz band is playin' a different arrangement of it

    5/5

  • 5 estrellas para Don Poncho.

  • good song

    cool!

    this no has name

  • and all that jazz...Poncho Sanchez Riata

  • cool!!!

  • Poncho will be at the Conga Room 8-20!

  • there is a big difference between blues and jazz blues..

  • Excelente!

  • I've loved this one ever since I first heard it! Thanks for posting the performance!

  • wow they lay that back jussssstttttt right.

  • this song always makes me dance. great

  • one of the best live performances to come along in a very long time the best conga player/bands going..........everybody should check out conmigo from i believe the same performance. will somebody please post it.

and thanks for this..............oh and cal tjaders "i showed them"....w/dave samuels on the vibes

  • this is not salsa it is blues i know how to play dis on the saxophone

  • blues? it's not latin jazz?

  • kinda. it is a jazz song, but Poncho puts his Latin twist in it...so yes it is Latin Jazz

  • many refer to this as "boogaloo" - marrying blues with a latin beat. Mongo Santamaria was one of the fathers.

  • así es boogalooo, ¡yeah¡

  • It is both blues and latin jazz. You could call it latin blues if you wanted, blues is a kind of jazz for most people.

These are definitely blues solos though. These guys would be right at home in a traditional blues band.

  • I need to get an organ like that ...is that a b3 hammond..?

  • Yep thats a B3 but you can also get Hammond modules - Dont buy a B3 as they are fricking heavy and you need a Leslie Cab (speaker that spins with a hole in it to make it scream) get the electric Hammond modules - Before anyone slags me of my fathers a full time pro player and on Hero's of Hammond album so whats good for him is good for us.

  • Hey, thanks for the info..

  • omg this is just what i was looking for I wrote a song to this melody in my school and I needed a sorta instrumental and here it is....check it out my song is called shut up!

  • is poncho sanchez the one on congas...i luv the percussionist but i dont kno his name lol

  • i have heard hundreds of versions of watermelon man. but poncho is the only one who tears it up like a pro. if you hear the version on his "latin soul" cd, you get a bigger kick out the the sax and trombone solos.

more ppl should listen to mongo and poncho instead of 50 cent and his stupid self! lovin this!!!

  • cuanto sabor!!!

  • omg i love this song i play it in jazz band and we rock lol its a legand song!!!

  • Lookout, Herbie--Pancho's playing your song and he's playin' it well. I love it!

  • His name is Poncho NOT Pancho.

  • You're WELCOME.

  • No problemo!

  • This song was written by the great Mongo Santamaria. Herbie merely covered it.

  • But that's the same as saying Otis Redding wrote Respect and Aretha *merely* covered it. By no means is it taking anything away from Santamaria.

  • Poncho may be playing it OK but he is copying Mongo lick for lick like most of his stuff :-(

  • Oh come on, Poncho's playing is more than okay on this track. Much more.

  • That is what most musicians do when they have a mentor!! Once they got it, they do their own style.

  • SO ? We learn to speak copying our parents, aren't we ? It's VOCABULARY. Same with music.

  • Absolutely! But from then on you add your own personality to it. The best way to learn to solo is to copy someone's solo that you like, from then on you automatically add your own flavour. Poncho still plays Mongo's solos lick for lick :-(. Look around even youtube, its easy to filter the crap and some REAL conga talent.

  • Cal Tjader didn't think the way you do about Poncho when he hired him in the 70's, and i'm not sure you have the same "ears" he had. But i maybe wrong.

  • You are absolutely correct. I bow to your superior knowledge of Conga drumming, afterall Mongo thought Cal all he knew about afro-cuban music.

  • This is an original tune written by Mongo Santamaria, not Herbie's !!

  • That is my grandma's brother. uncle poncho to us no kiding i swear

  • Cool bro!
