The Doberman is the only dog I will have! I had other breads but the Doberman is the best of them all! They are the smartest and most eager to learn. Even as a puppy they are very attentive and always sharp. But most of all they become part of the family. You never own a Doberman, you Adopt a Doberman or should I say they adopt you. They are very loving and must be part of the family.
As of today, ear cropping is banned in many civilized European countries, Australia, Israel, Singapore, South Africa and New Zealand while it is considered an illegal practice in Newfoundland and Labrador under the 1978 Animal Protection Act. Hopefully, one day such practices will be outlawed from the rest of the world and dogs will finally receive the same unconditional love they have provided humans for centuries...
Both of these procedures cause incredible pain for dogs, but what makes them more relevant, is the fact that in all cases, such surgeries are done when not medically necessary. This means that both practices are somewhat similar to the cosmetic surgery used in humans. This is all perpetuated by a vicious demand. Without a demand for this breed standard. Without people like you, there would be no dogs mutilated. You are ones perpetuating this - for no other reason to feed your ego's...
Ear cropping consists of cutting off up to about two/thirds of the dog's ears when the puppy is between the age of 9 to 12 weeks old. This surgery requires general anesthesia and good follow up care to ensure the dog's ear stand up properly. This also creates unnecessary discomfort for a puppy. Tail docking on the other hand, is the mutilation of a dog's tail and is done when the puppy is only 3 to 5 days old. It is generally done without the use of anesthetics. You can only imagine the pain...
Dog owners must realize what rights are being considered here. The right to make of a dog an object to please the owner's ego? The right to transform an animal into a fashion accessory? The right to perform cosmetic surgery on a defenseless animal? Some will state that in order to show thier dogs in the show ring and make money, they must have their dog's ears cropped and tails docked.
Why are dobermans docked and cropped still? This is mostly fault of breed clubs that have elected for many years to make ear cropping a breed standard. In other words, the practice of ear cropping is perceived as preserving breed character, giving more importance to looks than the animal's wellbeing. This causes in show dog owners the need to get their dogs cropped in order to adhere to the breed standards and win ribbons. Yes, win ribbons...
@AlisonChaines You should mind your own business and not try to dictate what other people can have or like. I don't LIKE the way Dobies look with uncropped ears or undocked tails, so I will get my dog's tail and ears altered because I want it to look a certain way; I don't feel guilty about it at all! Are you also against spaying and neutering?
@jfkjrlover Yes, I am, and if you can't handle the issues that arise with unsterilized dogs - a dog is not for you. Get a goldfish! How would you like it if I chopped your face to my liking? By your standard it is fair game to do this, is it not? Just give me your contact information and I'll get you in contact with a plastic surgeon that'll fix your ugly face up for you. You will look so much better - I promise. I'll pay for it of course...
I find no problem with ear cropping, as long as it's done by a vet who knows what he's doing. As well as an owner who can properly manage the ears afterwards. I think it should be up to the owner however. Who are we to tell someone that they can or can't do something with their dog? Especially since we've been cropping/docking dogs for years. To me it's all about preference. I like Dobes to be cropped/docked. But for other breeds like Rots I like natural. I think they look funny without a tail.
@Eira943 A dog is not a Honda Civic - something you can buy and modify the way you want. It's a living highly intelligent creature with a nervous system just as sensitive as yours. It needs its tail and ears to communicate and for balance. A word to you - If you don't like the looks of a Doberman as they are when they're born, don't get a Doberman. Stop abusing and mutilate these animals to feed your own ego.
@Eira943 I could not agree with you more...some people get really self-righteous about what people should or should not do with their dogs. If you want to get a Dobie's ears cropped, be responsible about who does it. If it's done by an experienced vet, there should not be a problem. It's a matter of personal preference IMO and should be the owner's business. Now if people cannot appreciate these beautiful dogs (cropped ears or not), they should stay the eff off YT. Just sayin'.
@leffehoegaarden Yup, Agree with you there. I think she needs 2 maybe 3 inches to make me happy. It's hard to see exactly how tiny she is though. So that's just my guesstimate.
@Eira943 Makes you wonder, the "experts" are selecting what they see as the epitome of the breed. So the size we all have come to expect from a well bred doberman is not....errr...ideal? These dog show judges are about to disappear up their own posteriors. She still looks like a lovely dog though. Where do you stand on ear cropping?
By the way, even the Dobie isn't that good-looking, because I can't find any American Dobermanns that look as good as a European Dobermann called Vice Versa Baron Brayton. He's a well pigmented, black and rust, lightly built European Dobermann with nice looking ears and tail.
i hate the small american dobermann standard i prefer the muscled europeen dobie like mines im sorry but that is everything that a dobermann not must be no strength no muscle no WORKING abillity and that for a workdog it,s sad what the have made off it in america real sad to see that as a true dobermann fan
Good she is the most beautiful doberman I've ever seen :)))
