  • whats with Australian Riders and Drifting

  • It's not strange but unusual for the wheel to hang in like that for that amount of time. Braking hard on a quick steering bike from speed the back wheel hops in and out a bit when the bike is upright and hangs out when leaned in. It's really unusual in this instance because the bikes never seem that upright from the previous right so Chris must have got the wheel up at the point that he flicked left then turned right on that inside line, the rear wheel touches down sometime later.

    Thats what I

  • What he is doing is braking hard with the front wheel so that the back wheel is just hovering above the surface of the track. So the bike is riding in a straight line towards the corner on the front wheel while the body and back wheel of the bike floats inwards, probably due to where his weight is positioned on the bike.

  • WTF??

  • wwkwk

  • Hes a witch! Burn him at the steak!

  • is this the 2006 season?

  • wtf!

  • 0_o

  • shit i blinked!!

  • absolute fucking bullshit.

  • Here the slowmotion ----> 0:27

  • I have no idea why people are weirded out by this. it's called backing it in. the back wheel steps out and the bike drives in the direction of the front wheel. it's very normal, looks a bit funny in this case because he coming straight towards the camera and for some reason moved to the inside before turning in but thats it.

  • @butcherbloke but they are going 200+ kmph mate, thats why its strange. If loosing traction at that speed doesn't scare you, you're one brave individual.

  • @shadow237666, how does that make it strange? It's perfectly normal to get a bit sideways when braking hard for a slow corner after a long straight. most racers do. The camera angle just doesn't show how far he is traveling forwards and it looks like he is crabbing across the track. and there are other riders in this video doing it too, but sliding towards the outside of the track to get a good line instead of towards the inside and people aren't freaked out by that...

  • @butcherbloke That's the thing - in this vid, the back wheel steps "in". You're right, it's very normal, but usually the back wheel goes towards the outside of the turn, not the inside. Looks weird.

  • @Trey3j he slides that way because of the direction he is traveling. Usually a rider wants to go to the outside of the corner to get a wide line as they turn in and so they slide in that direction. if this was approaching a right hander nobody would think it strange at all. The only strange thing in this video is why Vermulen wanted head towards the inside before turning in. perhaps he had out broke himself and was carrying to much speed so instead of turning in he was still hard on the brakes.

  • Man...that hurts my head just to look at it....it's like Chris was riding along dividing by zero or something. :)

  • HAX!!!!!!!

  • rediculous!

  • high ping

  • WEAK I have seen way better where the bike is on top of the biker DAMN

  • Why do 122 people dislike this? fucking insane I thought...

  • wait... what?

  • unvbeleiveable .. hahahahahah

  • I wanna learn how to change lanes like that !

  • Very Cool....

  • @rapidwardrobe

    STFU FAGGOT

  • if this was a video game i would call it a glitch but this is real

  • i didn't see it

  • Invisible tow cable. Fucking brilliant!

  • Lag drifting ! ahahaha

  • yawn

  • looks like a black hole was sucking him in xD

  • I can't even see it, must not have been that great.

  • @Derreise818 lol ?

  • @Derreise818 wtf?

  • mmmh it seems that his bike made a moonwalkxd

  • That was Guse ...

  • LOL

  • the good drift is the first bike, red and blue one! thats the shit!

  • WOW!!!!!!

  • Rear wheel steering.....

  • WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?

    who can this be O.o

  • Comment removed

  • @Kuderer its chris vermulen. It even says so in the description.

  • @Dravensdmf sry, i meant "how" not who ;)

  • Rearwheel braking with on the edge of locking out :O

  • donde carajo es que esta el slide puto!

  • @nandiz19 OBSERVA AL DE AZUL AL MERO PRINCIPIO YO TAMPOCO LO ENCONTRABA! haha

  • I actually did this at Mid OH coming off the back kink and began braking. Now I only did about 3 ft not 3/4 of the track, but I think weighting the outside peg more than the inside is a key factor.

I remember watching this race live and Chris was doing this almost every other lap.

  • someone said the chain was loose for that race, that'd put more side jolt on the rear when backing off and braking hard.

  • a bit like lift off oversteer in a car, but you'd about 10 times more difficult on the bike because he's under full braking too.

  • He must be chopping the throttle which puts a counter torque on the rear swingarm and sliding/riding the rear brake while using the perfect amount of front brake without causing a mono. Perfect. Hope he goes well this year on the new ZX10R after major surgery last year, he must be keen to get on a superbike again.

  • lol wtf

  • WTF! D:

  • Amazing! I didn't learn that at school in my physics lessons.. :S

  • This guy had a crash course in quantum physics and now he behaves like a particle and wave at the same time

  • shame chris didn`t stay at superbike he would of been champ. instead of riding a second rate gp bike and dozens of injurys.

  • @crazylegs187 That was truely sad. Toseland didn't fair much better.

Then you have Ben, comes to WSBK, rips them a new one, and moves on to MotoGP effertlessly. Now he's on to the factory squad, and looking to do very well.

Lets hope Cal Crutchlow does well too.

  • @HillbillyonaYZ Yea Ben is a great rider . I dont think cal is gonna set the world on fire tbh.And Toseland well i thinkj he`s seen his best days. Maybe chris can do summit next year with the new zx10.

  • i dont get it... what happened?

  • @markdem from 0:01 to 0:04 the blue rider drifts from the right to the left as if he was floating, watch closely and you will see it.

  • @eliassami5

it's so obvious that there's no need to watch closely :D

  • ma tgz???? e' impossibile?? nn ha sensoo!!!

  • Moonwalking on two wheels... :-)

  • if this was a game I would call it a glitch or a bug but this is the real deal

  • How da f...?...Hun?

  • Spetta...XD

  • wow stop modding motogp vermulen!

  • Hax! he's hacking!

  • That looked weeeiird.

  • My life is complete.

  • LOL. GLITCH.

    ps. did he died?

  • thrilleeeeeeeer(8) jajaja

  • vermeulen is badass.

  • Anyone notice his right knee?

Works like Aerobrake, with the surfing of the rear tyre and a lot of experienced control of the steering.

It is Real and a Master!

  • braking drift is not hard to learn really... just fronbrake and switch down and a slide will come! with slipperclutch is really really easy.. im driving the second year now and can do it a bit... and im not a extrem good driver... powerslides!! that are really skills...

  • @eskallito Just that easy hey lol Everyone's a pro here lol.....Post a vid of you 'doing it a bit' and send me the link, then I'll consider believing ur comment.

  • He's fishtailing. The rear tyre is raised 2-3mm off the ground, and with the necessary steering adjustments you can drift like this. Takes a lot of skill though!

  • guys...hes just weighting the outside of the peg instead of the inside..therefore pushing the bike inward...

  • What's most impressive is that he is drifting to the inside of the corner. Incredible.

  • that looked so weird :D

  • Boring

  • i´ve never seen something like this before

  • haha it looks so strange, like a glitch in a video game or something.

  • The screwy thing about this is he's backing it in the "wrong" way. Normally the rear would pivot to the outside, but somehow he wound up with it on the inside and had to chase with the front to keep the bike pointing straight. Bizarre.

  • WTF????

  • to normal riders, this seems like a miracle feat. some people don't even understand what just happened.

to trackday riders and amateur racers, you learn how to start doing it after some years.

To Chris Vermeulen, it's another day at the track.

  • Haha... Crazy!

  • surfing!! xD

  • @DieLocher Vermulen kinda pivoted the rear part of the bike the wrong way and went inwards into the inside of the turn... you only see it once...

  • i dont see it whats happend ?

  • man he has skills

  • When you brake hard the rear wheel can/does come off of the ground a bit. When this happens it can try to pivot around the steering stem and come out to the side. This means the rear is stepping out and all the weight is on hte front tire. He steered the bike to the right to catch the rear stepping out while it was skipping across the pavement. You see this a lot in racing, just not usually of this magnitude.

  • @kurzsbk08 Yeah it actually looks like he is havng a problem with his bike - you would not want to slide to tehinside of teh corner, because it doesn't set you up properly.

  • @Badassbok I agree. I remember watching this race and he did it repeatedly. There's no sense in diagonalling like that normally, so it must have been due to something else.

  • i didnt see it =L

  • His leg is a sail? Doubtful...

I'd love someone more educated to explain that drift to me.

  • a foot full of rear brake cause the rear wheel to slow down and slide, but not so much that the wheel lock, the rest is done with moving his weight slightly - possibly to his left

  • ...I've watched this so many times... holy shit, it's crazy!

  • Lol. Havn't seen this kind before, but i think it's like "Rearwheelslider" says, that hes knee is playing a big role in this.

  • OMG! its like a ghost!

  • there´s something wrong here......

  • ive heard of counter steering but fuck me pink !

  • that's impossible. that's impossible O.O

  • it looks like he's flying

  • DAMN!!!

  • Fucking unbelievable...

  • the crabwalk

  • That motherfucker just divided by zero, didn't he?

  • yes he did wtf incredible

  • @procaralho2 Dude that is the best comment ever!!!

  • @procaralho2 and made a deafening sound in a vacuum at that...

  • @procaralho2

    Best comment ever!!

  • I think this is a bit like 'speedway'?

You know the stuff they do on 'dirt' tracks, if you will pardon the experession, the front wheel is turned away from the direction of turn, and the back wheel is power slide into the direction of the turn. Because it is at such speed it has to be less exagerated and the turn is thus less.

Anymore and you would be going home in an ambulance. Something like that anyway?

  • Looked bizarre, but I think it ultimately slowed him down

  • moonslide lol

  • .....D: w...t...f . Like the wind is pushing him like sailboat lol.

  • it looks more like a stoppie than a drift, rear tyre goes weightless under braking and swings out as he leans, hes done it impossibly smoothly though

  • omg... the first one xD crazy

  • It's at the beginning of the video! I didn't realize it first either. Because it shows the other 2 guys for the rest of the video.

I suppose the back of Vermulen's bike swung to the right (from his view) and he just followed it with the front wheel to straighten it out. To give the rear wheel more grip he had to ease up on the brakes and that's what he wanted to avoid. Because you don't really wanna go to that side. The line is where the other guy was (left side from their view).

  • Yea I think it's similar to a speedway turn which he inadvertantly went into and then had to 'ride it out' to straighten up, had the bend been much wider he could have gone all the way around like that, but he had to get it straight to go into a normal turn as it would be impossible to make the turn tighter without breaking your neck!!

  • blue, white and pink bike slide under braking earliest in the video is far more mind boggling than the one they were making a fuss about!

  • bull shit! i've seen better...

  • randy mamola on the cagiva

  • Michael jackson on a motorbike!

  • @vdelsen14 Yeah, but Vermeulen isn't a Pedophile.

  • @vdelsen14 jajajaj lol ,you comment very fun

  • @vdelsen14 Beautifully put!

  • @vdelsen14 hahaha

  • real riders!

  • it similar to a feint drift

  • Newton was wrong?

  • 0:00---0:05 i cant belive my eyes what i have seen...

  • is this real? :o

  • hahaha

  • LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • amazing, he brakes strongly the front tire and moved the mass to the oposite side of a normal slide, hahaha wow i never seen something like this...

  • That's some artful riding! These men are some of the best riders in the world.

  • howd he do that?

  • its like a side moonwalk

  • nice supermoto trick

  • the first drift is amazing^^

  • He "backs it in" which, if you're not familiar with motorcycling, means to un-weight + "slide" the rear wheel as you slow down with hard front-braking. A fancy, yet prac tical way to help line up your bike for corner entry.

HOWEVER, Vermeulen swings the rear of the bike INWARDS instead of OUTWARDS, which is what you'd expect. Tricky? Very. Do-able? Definitely. Kick-Ass? Uh-HUH!!

AND it's actually very practical when entering a hairpin turn + needing to get inside QUICK, like he did here

  • surely its nto practical at a hairpin....

the most efficient line round a 180 degree bend is making it as smooth and wide as possible, so moving to the inside of the tack before the corner begins is not beneficial.

if he had already turned in he would be going in that direction, but as the front brake is firmly in play, and the back isnt planted, hes not turning in yet.

    therefore - not practical.

  • It does depend on the characteristics of the corner in question. The adelaide hairpin does open up a lot on the exit, and with an increasing radius corner an early apex is a good idea.

However in this vid Chris probably takes the example a bit far... Okay a lot far!

  • Btw i think that ther are different efficent ways to do an hairpin, but depend from the type of your bike.

Wanna see sbk races? look at my channel!

  • Laws a' physics? Sorry mate never heard of 'em...

  • this doesnt defy the laws of physics by any means

  • is that impossible to you? gees rossi done that many many many much times before

  • *am i *

  • i'm i the only one who cant see the drift ? all i can see are there helmets lol

  • is simple....he brakes.... the front gets heavy...the rear get light....and the rear slides following the previos direction(vector) for inhertia(it is so in english? i don't know)

  • what the fudge? i dont just ride a trials bike i ride my bros ntv 650 etc. the way u talk u wud think you were rossi.lol i take it u race bikes? i cnt afford track days an shit.lol p.s theres btr drifters than that.lol

  • calm down. it all boils down to a heavy front brake an you get the stoppie effect.lol

  • and now grammatical correct please

  • i wish i had brakes like that on my bike

  • It looked like he was strafing.

  • cut like a knife...

  • I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you on that. If the chain had fallen off he wouldn't have powered through the rest of the turn.

  • I watched that race @ remember that his chain came off

  • @mbspeed HEHE, thats true!

  • @graham6824 you obviously didnt watch the rest of the video

  • @graham6824 yea dude...if the chain broke the bike would just straighten itself out because there would be no force slowing the tire to induce a slide

  • @xcruzrr6: in this race, the chain was too loose which made the bike slide side ways and later in this race Chris stopped with a DNF when the chain broke. The race was from the 2005 season.

  • lol,sry guys but this is shit lol

there are some way better videos of bike drifting...

  • Ye there are, but if you were a rider like me or some people here you would know that this is impossible.

  • Too bad there are so few Garry McCoy video's here on Yt. He showed some slides that seemed impossible. Even on the 2-stroke Yamaha's in GP500.

  • Thats amazing... It doesn't even look real.

  • el primero de azul si que es brutal!O_o

  • looks like a work with a little of front brakes and the masses of a motorcycle and body.

  • Youd know if the back wheel was locked when he was drifting coz he would be sailing through the air after a high side. The whole secret of drifting a bike is NOT to lock the back wheel. Drifting and sliding under brakes are two totally different animals. Brake slide you lock it, drifting you dont.

  • That slide is the most sexiest thing ever!
