@hotfirecaster I miss him too. About 4 months ago I suffered a huge loss in my life and I've sought and found comfort in all of Chris' recordings. I've listened to every song hundreds of times, looping on Rhapsody, and I still can't get enough of his soul.
If anyone has any doubts (although I can't see why one would) as to his artistic diversity, try to find a video of him on here that is an interview. I can't remember the name of the video, but in it he talks about his experiences as a TECHNO(!!!) dj in germany, as well as his appreciation for rap music. He absorbed influences from all over.
I remember reading a review of his first album in Rolling Stone(before it became aCOMMIE rant rag!) and bought the album on a whim.Needless to say,I became a big fan & saw him live several times, glad I did.He passed away much too soon for his remarkable talent.Narcotic Prayer is where rock & actual ART meld together into a beautiful combustion.Probably good that he wasnt mega popular, didnt fit his style, besides he prob.would have shunned it anyway.Chris Whitley-a true ARTIST !!
Yes sir! Somewhere I think I read (might have been the first RS interview/piece they did on him in 1992) that he was an amateur motocross competitor, but took up music instead,I could be wrong-God 1992 seems so long ago!-but a cool anecdote,if true, nonetheless! CHRIS WHITLEY: the music still lives on!! RIP
Saw him in Austin in 98, he had his daughter with him. The song he played with her was amazing. I'll always feel blessed to have seen him live. it was raw, it was music...
I wish i could send myself in a timemachine... here in finland we never had a chance to meet him in person... but way back -96 Mr. Lanois said after suberb gig that "he'll be around"... he will !! we won't forget about him
One of the many gem thatChris wrote, to me it's amazing that he was so underrated ??? How can one not hear the purity, sincerity and poetry in all of his songs. I would alwaysregret to not have the chance to cross his path :o(
Right you are! I wouldn't use the term underrated though cuz he earned himself great respect and was well known by musicians and music aficionado's (at least in Europe).
But as always when such a talented genuis passes away way too early what remains is the light that shines through their art. And that for sure should already have earned him his place in the Hall'O'Fame. Greets
Underrated?? He ran from the MTV cameras shouting "I'm not worth all this attention" after the Living With The Law album. He might have changed a little on the way, might not, but the music speaks for itself anyway. He'll grow, not fade.
i got to see Chris in Dallas,Tx about 4 months before he left us. The place was packed, the sound was great, the lighting was great, and Chris was outstanding. I'll never forget it was dead silent in the theatre, and I'll yelled out "Wild Country". Chris looked me dead in the eye and started tuning his guitar for the song. When he walked off stage that night the crowd was standing and Chris had some tears in his eyes. I had tears in mine.
thank you completely

Got to shake his hand in Boulder. For a skinny guy you could feel great strength in his grip from years of playing that steel Guitar. God I miss him
