If I understand right from the texts I read, Tchudes should be Estonian people. Because Estonian territory is on the continent and connected to Russia and other countries, I think it is possible for them to have crossbows.
I've heard that the clip with the axe is the directors symbol of the later upcoming story (and film) Kautokeino 1852 (in norwgian "Kautokeino-opprøret")). It had it's premiere in Tromsø, january 2008
