I look after a 916 and do all the work for it myself. I think the thing about Dukes is that they encourage you to be more involved in them. Learning to properly pull one down and rebuild it is an incredibly rewarding experience. I also own old muscle cars that I built as well and having an involved maintenance regime just seems normal to me. Working on your own gear, learning more about it just adds to the experience i think. All things have good and bad points.

ducati brakes are less userfriendly than r1 ones.they are inclined to lock the wheel,specially in street riding and in track too without a good set of tires.both got "monoblock" calipers,6 piston calipers for r1(sumitomo) and 4 pistons caliper for ducati(brembo).morover the handling on ducati is totally different from yamaha,r1 is still the king,ducati is stiffer,too much for my taste and it got not the best ride position cause the longer tank for accomodate the L engine.more money for less!

Bullshit on Ducati brakes not being userfriendly.  Granted they demand respect, but once used to single finger braking, (absolute must on brembo monoblocs) you have unbelievable control over the brakeability of the bike. It's amazing what just your index finger can do. You can blip the throttle easier, and progressively brake and roll on with the throttle coming into turns if your really good.

i bought the bike brand new.

there were many defects in the first prodcution bikes well know from ducati that did many recall for them!

still they didn't solve the issue related to bike stalling often when hot and the not stable idle too.

moreover the bike is completely unable to go under 30 mph without "tearing"in any gear .

i know these bikes are not produced to ride in city but this is one more thing to not choose a ducati.too pushed engines to compete with japs and these are the results!

I have owned this bike for 2 years now without a single problem. My mechanic tells me all the bikes he saw that, "stalled", were the ones that were ridden to Starbucks and back. Every one he ever saw that had been ridden properly( ie: out of town an hard ) didn't have any problems. I think it may have been a combo between bad rider/lemon bike.

yup, my thoughts exactly. that's why I was thinking for a long time about bike sharing in the community. People with different bikes should get together, figure out the legality of the whole thing, and then switch 'em and go riding together for like a day or two. and at the end swap reviews and opinions and post the results on a blog for people read. that way there's no politics involved, and the reviews will be based on no bull shit honest rider responses with varying skills.

HAHA. Not at all, I own a 2006 R1 and having had the privilege of comparing it to a Duke 1098, I can assure you that the Yami eats it. All the swish engineering in the world (dukes are HIDEOUSLY overpriced for their abilities) doesn't amount to anything when a more affordable, and more attractive bike can out-muscle it.

And the two bikes you are comparing were trying to accomplish two different goals. The Ducati is more about cruising and a comfortable power band.

Meanwhile, Yamaha makes most of their motorcycles for purely high rpm torque. I'm sure another bike that focuses on the same principles could give that Yamaha a run for its money.

But I'm not really trying to defend Ducati here. I like Suzuki.
