Most of what you see on televised shows these days is a lush studio track lip-synched. This is the real deal, and a testimony to the tremendous talent Karen had. She was one-of-a-kind.

@bolong The eyebrows are great because they were part of her. It's thoughts - like a persons eyebrows need to be a certain way - that are the problem--NOT the eybrows. im 18 and i really love the carpenters... i wonder what karen would look like if she's still alive now... i wish im alive during 70's, they have such great songs, unlike now...
@Msmonkeyeater maybe a couple of wrinkles in her forehead and cheeks and half turned hair pulled back in a french twist and grayish ring around those golden brown eyes also a few inches shorter in height
I have the utmost admiration and respect for the talent that is Karen Carpenter. What a voice. It is hard to believe that, if she was still with us, she would be 61!
I have the utmost admiration and respect for the talent that is Karen Carpenter. What a voice. It is hard to believe that, if she was still with us, she would be 61!
When it's her who sings the song, the song sounded more beautiful than the original. Her voice and interpretation is phenomenal, she hits the notes perfectly and her low voice is rich and full. She's unmatched and extraordinary.
Really looking forward to the day some of the Carpenters backstage footage is released, of before & after the shows. I've been lucky enough a while back to see some INCREDIBLE footage. Now as far as someones question of who Karen admired as friends most. Karen Loved Debbie & Carol very much & would of Loved to get back to conn. much more. Karen didn't look at herself as famous & these two ladies are down to earth & not out for the celebrity. Only mistake they made was talking to Randy Schmidt.
What a terrible version. Even something as gorgeous as Karen's voice is completely killed by the corny, run-of-the-mill arrangement suitable for the lousiest of Las Vegas joints.
Most beautiful voice of all time. Whoever disagrees with this is in total denial. Her voice quality and interpretation of songs are one of a kind and unmatched. Her low vocal range is extraordinary and she can hit some high notes beautifully. Has very good personality.
Karen is amazing. She might not have had the most "rangy" voice but is was certainly the most soulful and rich. RIP Karen we will cherish your contributions. HOWEVER Richard is a total douche bag. I am tired of seeing interviews where he minimizes him and his parents lack of care for Karen and her illness yet he MAXIMIZES him being the talent behind the Carpenters. Minus Karen this band wouldn't have stood a chance and would have been utterly dismissible.
Do you remember were you were when her death was announced? I was having my Hemorrhoids Cauterised by a catholic heavy weight boxer in a sleazy hotel in Manchester UK
Richard Carpenter would have done a great job performing a song or two at the Royal wedding, however if our own president isen't even invited, well you see what I'm saying. I could see The Carpenters doing We've only just begun, so fitting for a Royal beginning.
Ironically, when I saw Agnetha of ABBA doing this song, I thought she was covering a Carpenters song. I was wrong. It was their original song. So here is Karen Carpenter covering the song that I thought was hers in the first place.
@wcwnumber1fan The Carpenters did not record this song before ABBA. The song's music and lyrics were written by ABBA and the song is an ABBA original. The Carpenters performed a cover of this song.
@lightspeedv yea i believe they have composed the song but seriously the carpenters sing so much better than their version and pwned them. Even MaMa Mia version is better than the ABBA version in my opinion.
@wingwing0404 To say "i believe they have composed the song" meant that there's a chance ABBA did not compose it. FACT: Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus composed this song, released in 1977.
While Karen Carpenter is a phenomenal singer and The Carpenters were amazing, IMO, they do not sing this song as well as Agnetha does. This song was written specifically with Agnetha in mind. "Thank You for the Music" was intended to form part of a "mini-musical" called "The Girl with the Golden Hair".
There was a Little Girl in walmart who look up at me & pointed to a Carpenters CD that I was holding, as I alway like to put the Carpenters CD's on top with today's music (if you want to call it that) that they sell. She was with her Mom, & the Little Girl said to me that "Mommy is taking me to see that group" I smiled trying to hold back alot of sadness, & said to the Little Girl that they put on the greatest concerts you would ever want to see, but the concert is in Heaven now.
RANDY SCHMIDT, (AUTHOR OF LITTLE GIRL BLUE) THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOU & ME IS THAT I RESPECT THE CARPENTER FAMILY, YOU DON'T YOU JUST WANT TO LINE YOUR POCKETS WITH AS MONEY AS YOU CAN. WITH ALL THE TIME THAT YOU PUT INTO A BOOK (THAT BY THE WAY IS MISSING ALOT) HOW DOES IT FEEL TO KNOW THAT THE PEOPLE WHO WERE A PART THE CARPENTERS THE MOST WOULDN'T GIVE YOU JACK SQUAT! This particular studio didn't have the best sound for groups who would come in & play. The Carpenters set their equiptment up very smart & got the most out of thier sound. the preparation was an education alone. Abba sang together like the Beatles would so you'll have that echo stereo sound as I learned through the years. Carpenters singing & music were so much better both on record & Live, believe I know. No disrespect to Abba, love them.
Yes this was an Abba song, and no one could do it better, but Karen did a great job and did not change a word, keeping "golden hair".. It is sad that her voice was lost too soon..but her voice will also live forever in songs like this.
I just can't look at skinny Karen :( She's got the best female voice ever, like often posted, but the abba version is - in my humble opinion - sung with more passion and feeling.
Richard said they recorded "Thank You For the Music," but he felt his arrangement sounded too much like ABBA's. He didn't want to copy anyone, so he gave up on it. (In other news, I have no idea how my last comment got so many negative votes... it wasn't a bad comment, IMO.)
She butchered this song, only an American can possibly appreciate this terrible rendition of an Abba classic,R.I.P anyway i did admire some of her other work, but she will be forgotten long before Abba.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@TheSsmith64 Umm... the Carpenters are immortal, and Karen does NOT butcher it. The normally-perfect band sounds really under-rehearsed, and whoever was the sound engineer on the show really dropped the ball here. Richard was also under the influence of Quaaludes at this point, so that probably didn't help with the arranging. Karen's really the only one who comes across well in this particular recording.
@arfies Ah-ha! Found out why the band sounds under-rehearsed- Fan Club Newsletter #60: "It was one of those last minute decision events . . . Richard and Karen stole time from a recording session to appear as a favor for their friend John Davidson who was hosting for Johnny Carson . . . Karen sang a gorgeous song they discovered on their recent trip to Europe, entitled Thank You for The Music [they met ABBA on "Starparade"]. This is also be incorporated in their new road show."
@TheSsmith64 Couldn't agree with you more. Although Karen had good voice their music was very dated and not of the time, considering to what the rest of the world was producing.
@thatsme1945 One idiot agreeing with another, how very touching. No their music was not dated, they invented a whole new sound in the early 70's ,sold more records than anyone else during that greatest decade for music all within the 1st 4 years of the 70's and their music is still more popular than ever 40 years later.I hate to use an old worn out cliche, but get a life.Sheesh!
I am a huge ABBA fan, and I really love Agnetha Faltskog's and Anni-Frida's voices, but I have to say Karen's voice was better than either one of the ABBA girls. this is how I look at it, after years and years of close listening---Karen Carpenter's voice did the job of both Agnetha's and Frida's voices combined. On their own, Agnetha's voice and Frida's voice was nice, but they achieved a better sound when the two ABBA girls combined their voices. Karen's voice didn't need extra help.
Karen had the voice of an angel but... When I first heard this song on a cassette years ago I thought it was cringeworthy. I thought they were so much better than this debacle. Richard has been quoted as saying he heard the song, liked it and they started work on it before deciding not to finish it off. Essentially he realised what he was doing was copying the song and that, as an arranger, was something he just didn't do.
I always wondered if The Carpenters and ABBA ever met. I know Olivia Newton John was a very good friend of Karen Carpenter, and that ABBA guest starred on Olivia's t.v. special in the late 70s (and were friends with Olivia too). I am guessing that Karen picked this song to sing because of the mutual association with ABBA by Olivia Newton John.
@mrshinyshoes Olivia Newton John and Abba's careers constantly crossed from the early years starting at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, which Abba won.
@mrshinyshoes Yes, the Carpenters met ABBA in Germany during "Starparade." That's where they heard ABBA do this song and liked it. Richard considered releasing it as a single (since ABBA wouldn't until the '80s) but decided not to since he didn't want to copy their version. Apparently the reason the band sounds under-rehearsed is because the Carpenters were a last-minute guest as a favor to host/friend John Davidson.
John Davidson hit the nail on the head when he said "The Carpenters gave us a new sound." They certainly did. It's wonderful to see Karen singing this ABBA song. The Carpenters and ABBA are my two favorite groups of all time.
This is 1978 , 5 years before Karen died. It beggars belief that no one seemed to care about her enough to notice her weight loss and get her help before her tragic end.
i was at the the first two abba concerts in sydney australia when abba performed this song on stage for the first time. it was a one of a kind experience. i think just as highly of the carpenters but why did karen choose to cover a song that was very much abba in 1978 just a year after abba produced it to perfection?
She and even Ric at 3:47 were off their usual best tempo with this song, only happens when doing a cover you haven't played enough. And I notice how her health must have been failing her, even to sing while walking and at her arm jives. Not her best day.So sad she was consumed so early, from the highest star fallen on this earth back to the angels choir from where she came. Her voice, music sensibility,as her borther's were one of a kind.
I love and adore Karen Carpenter and her wonderful voice, but damn, this song sux. Not even her angelic voice can save it. I am not dissing her, they can't ALL be hits. When you write music, some rises to the top and some falls to the bottom where it hopefully it stays. But her voice is still beautiful.
I just came back from putting a bouquet of daisies on the doorstep of her home in Downey. 28 years ago today she left us. It was a soul searching moment to stand in front of her home and be reminded of the pure talent that was and still is Karen Carpenter. You are missed.
@CarpentersFanForLife Abba did this song sooooo much better. The Carpenters packed the stage with musicians yet this performance sounds dull and empty compared to Abba. This is a long way off their best, I think Karen should have stuck to the drums.
Most beautiful voice of all time and whoever disagrees with this is in total denial. Her voice quality and her interpretation of her songs are one of a kind and unmatched. Her low vocal range is extraordinary and she could hit some high notes beautifully. Has very good personality.
@grobanfan2 I totally agree; Karen has the best female voice. Maybe not octave range or hitting epic notes but has x factor; the voice of something cosmic.
@grobanfan2 Amen, couldn't have said it any better. Karen could hit some high & low notes in rehersals that only if people could have heard, it would be easy to see why she was without a doubt one of the finest female vocalist if not thee finest female vocalist of all time. Thanks so much.
@kasra333 You are the child in denial.F.M had an outrageous voice, but to even compare it to Karen's is ridiculous. This is not her best song and a bad time in life for her,but you've surely heard her classics from the early 70's.You are a kook.
@kasra333 Maybe I misunderstood you.If you're saying that F.M. was the greatest male singer,I can respect that and apologize for the kook remark. But if you're actually claiming he had a more beautiful voice than Karen, the kook remark is valid.
if the carpenters had recorded this song in a recording studio with some better music/better instruments, i'm sure it would be just as good as ABBA's version, perhaps better, because karen has a better voice than agnetha :-p
Although she is not among us anymore, Karen has the most beautiful voice of the world, and always will have. She always makes me love her when she starts to sing. Thank you for the music.

I am guessing that Karen picked this song to sing because of the mutual association with ABBA by Olivia Newton John.
mrshinyshoes 11 months ago
@mrshinyshoes Olivia Newton John and Abba's careers constantly crossed from the early years starting at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, which Abba won.
thatsme1945 8 months ago
@thatsme1945 Yes, i know that, but did ABBA ever meet the Carpenters?
mrshinyshoes 8 months ago
@mrshinyshoes Yes, the Carpenters met ABBA in Germany during "Starparade." That's where they heard ABBA do this song and liked it. Richard considered releasing it as a single (since ABBA wouldn't until the '80s) but decided not to since he didn't want to copy their version. Apparently the reason the band sounds under-rehearsed is because the Carpenters were a last-minute guest as a favor to host/friend John Davidson.
arfies 8 months ago
John Davidson hit the nail on the head when he said "The Carpenters gave us a new sound." They certainly did. It's wonderful to see Karen singing this ABBA song. The Carpenters and ABBA are my two favorite groups of all time.

This is 1978 , 5 years before Karen died. It beggars belief that no one seemed to care about her enough to notice her weight loss and get her help before her tragic end.
lovemetu 11 months ago
i was at the the first two abba concerts in sydney australia when abba performed this song on stage for the first time. it was a one of a kind experience. i think just as highly of the carpenters but why did karen choose to cover a song that was very much abba in 1978 just a year after abba produced it to perfection?

Has very good personality.
grobanfan2 1 year ago 43
@grobanfan2 I totally agree; Karen has the best female voice. Maybe not octave range or hitting epic notes but has x factor; the voice of something cosmic.
SuperBingo96 1 year ago 22
@SuperBingo96 3 octaves doesn't count as a good range?

Although Karen carpenter had a good voice the music was very middle of the road, not current of the scene in the seventies outside of America.

if the carpenters had recorded this song in a recording studio with some better music/better instruments, i'm sure it would be just as good as ABBA's version, perhaps better, because karen has a better voice than agnetha :-p
