Completely unnecessary, ignorant, racist statement. I hope you're infertile or something because someone like you shouldn't ever have children of be allowed near them.
Alright you ignorant piece of shit. You are not Australian,
Firstly due to your disgusting comments and giving such a bad image of Australia. God, i hope people don't think every Australian are as mean spirited as you are.
The aboriginal are the real Australians (have an history check). You should go back where you from. It is said that James cook discovered Australia, Well i don't understand how he do someone discover a country where people already live in it?
Not only australians are proud of what this woman achieved. A lot of f'in europeans like me cried like kids after the race. We all knew what it meant.
This for me was one of the two most memorable moments of Sydney 2000. I imagine that the feelings of the Aussie public watching their beloved Cathy win must compare favourably with how I felt, as a Brit, watching Sir Steve Redgrave winning his fifth consecutive Olympic gold.
Twelve years on and this still brings a tear to my eye. This victory by Cathy Freeman is my favorite moment in sporting history. It was truly spectacular in so many ways. For one moment in time Australia was united. Very inspirational.
I always cry when I watch this video, it makes me proud as an Australian to see her do so well. I was also humbled to see this olympic champion turn round and help the photographer who had stumbled - good on you Cathy!!
That Aboriginal flag has got no place representing Australia. If anyone doesn't like Australias flag then fuck off to one of the other 200 nations on this planet this was a country built by WHITE ANGLO-CELTIC people and not by Aboriginal scum.
Amazing video. I love Cathy Freeman - she ran so beautifully - such stride and energy. There is something very beautiful about her too - she has an open and kind of earth-mother look about her. I think that bodysuite was almost like a cocoon for her in the final - to protect her from all of the outside pressure. I imagine it had an effect on other athletes too. This is just one of sport's great iconic moments.
A really great moment of the 2000 Olympics but I thought this moment was a bit overated. I remember the next morning there was papers saying that this was Kathy's games. You win one gold medal, does this make it your games??? Ian Thorpe won more than anyone I think at this Olympics. I'm not a racist either, just think people should have keep things into perpective.
@jc208132 I think Australia's lack of a medal winning tradition (of any colour) in athletics, particularly in sprint events,. puts Cathy Freeman's achievements in perspective more than how many gold medals Ian Thorpe won but there is something in what you say, the media can find a way to exaggerate anything, no matter how amazing it is.
@DwiteTheSpriteKnight Firstly, do you know who Betty Cuthbert is? Or Maureen Strickland? Check your history, BUT I think that the gold of Cathy transcends ALL other Aussie golds as it was achieved in the cauldron of modern media AND it made me proud.
@dasweeney62 I first read about Betty Cuthbert and Shirley Strickland when I was a child. I'm not suggesting that Cathy Freeman was Australia's first successful track and field athlete. I'm just saying that it's not an area in which Australia has had much success overall. I'm glad that her achievement makes you feel so proud.
tbh i think it's a big of a disgrace that you put up the Aboriginal flag instead of the Australian flag. When a white person wins the Olympics they don't parade around with a white power flag or some shit.
@iImplying How is the Aboriginal flag a symbol of a black power movement? The Aboriginal flag represents their culture. The video shows the Australian and Aboriginal flags on it, just like Cathy Freeman holding both the flags together. She stands for Australian and Aboriginal pride- if the video had one without the other it would be a racist statement.
@chesterinoaussie very nicely expressed. AND not reverting to the language that one often finds on youtube. If only there had been more moments since - like the walk across the bridge.
@chesterinoaussie I LOVE your comment, as a white Aussie-nothing wrong with showing respect to both cultures on her part. IMO if Aus becomes a republic the only flag I will respect is the Union Jack removed and the Aboriginal one replaces it-then finally two cultures can have total pride as a country on where we are and in history what made us.
@spider422001 Show some bloody respect to the people who built this damn country. If it was left to the Aboriginals the people of Australia would be living in fucking mud huts with no running water. WHITE ANGLO-CELTIC people built this country and are the reason millions of non-white scum are so desperate to emigrate here.
@spider422001 You're some self-hating white liberal wanker aren't you? People like you are a disgrace. Where's your race card when it comes to the fact Abo scum attack WHITES far more than the other way around? Next to the joker is it?
Fair enough, she is Australian, it may seem pedantic, but she is also Aboriginal. I'm a maori, and whilst I am a New Zealander, it irks me slightly when people imply we are all the same.. whilst I am a kiwi, I also identify as being a maori. Cathy Freeman is Australian, but also identifies as being Aboriginal, hence why she had both flags. If you don't see she is Aboriginal and think she is like all other Aussies..you kind of don't see her if you see what I mean..you don't see her culture..
@hashoish There is no point assuming that someone who didn't run would have won because they ran an amazing race in Atlanta four years previously. Cathy Freeman is not only the Sydney Olympic 400m champion, she is also the 1999 and the 1997 world champion. It seems like not many people are aware of that.
Looking at her reaction initially it was is if she had been well beaten or it was some sort of crushing anti-climax - it puzzled me at the time, now I think sometimes a moment of sporting triumph isn't always what you expect
@darren100905 I think it's the crushing weight of a nation's expectations slowly falling off her. I'm a Brit, but I was glad she won, as she was the poster girl for those Olympics, including lighting the flame. Our own darling Jessica Ennis is already starting to realise what Cathy Freeman went through, but Jess won't have anything to do with the opening ceremony.
WOW. isnt it amazing how this got the whole of australia to put their petty differences and hatred away. For one minute, there was 20 million australians, glued to the tv, watching this, screaming for her to win this for ALL australians. Did the organisers even wildly imagine what was to unfold on this memorable night. Hundreds of millions of australians dollars invested in this one moment. Australias best sporting moment, EVER...
@breadbaker226 stinks a bit???? white men came and fucked over her ancestors she has the fucking right to fly that flag................countires and states are fucking constructs...................we are but grains of sand in a universe at least 500 billion galaxies.....jesus humans are so fucking twatish
@3tangle3 Cathy has the right to fly that flag, but I have the right to dissagree with her actions. Running under 2 flags is like steering a car with 2 steering wheels...
P.S Plenty of blacks "fucked over" plenty of whites too when they had the chance, so its not all just one sided. I believe that the Aboriginals were pretty handy with spears....
@breadbaker226 dont be daft........flags are just constructs of the a few elite minds.......there is no inherent meaning in existence or the universe...so just chill out
terrific win, terrific champion... but what a sprint at the end by the athlete in lane two, came from last to take a very close 4th in hardly any distance at all :P
Love Cathy but what happened to Marie Perec was not right & Cathy should have checked on Marie to see what happened & if she was alright.White Australia got more out of this victory than Aboriginal Australia & its look like they took out insurance for the victory.
Basically, if you can imagine having the entire weight of a nation on your shoulders, and then 400 meters later it's lifted off you ... something along those lines! :)
The opening ceremony light up put enormous pressure on her. The weight of expectation was on her. She just remained focused and ran the race of her life.
Fantastic, love what you have done, & the music with Lisa Gerrard is special! I'm an expat living in NZ.....love it. Cathy deserved her win & she worked for every inch of it.
yes...although we cheer and shout, i can see how nervous she was...her mouth seems dry before thestart and i think the first feeling she felt when she cross the line is RELIEF. With so much burden and pressure on her shoulder, expecting her to win...she did extrmely well. Well Done Cathy. You deserved it.
I get such goosebumps watching this!! This is an unforgettable moment. I'm sure people who watched this race can tell you exactly where they were or what they were doing when it took place!
@mynameisseals Funny you say that ppl remember where they were when Cathy won. I was sitting in the hospital holding my newborn son, so proud of him, so proud of Cathy and so happy to be an aussie and witness such a special event on the birth day of my child.
well, the suit helped her to win, it was a windbreaker. another example: the simers, when the wear the head cap, it is faster to swim....same thing on land
she didn't need the dumb suit , when the french athlete pulled out , she was a certainty to win , the others weren't in the race, sorry it was a non event ,but the press , made it a huge deal
I was 15 when I watched this historic achievement. Until now get emotional. Congratulations Cathy, congratulations Aboriginal people, congratulations Australians.
Full points for showing the aboriginal flag as well as the Australian flag. This and Lisa Gerard's movement moved me to tears. I saw an interview with Catherine (as she insists on being called now) last week on ABC TV Australia, and she was just the nicest person - such a well-balanced and wonderful woman. And now she's using her money and fame to help disadvantaged aboriginal kids in the bush, to try and help them realise their dreams just like she did. So inspiring.
Thanks for posting. This is right up there as one of our greatest sporting moments. Music is awesome... im sitting here with a HUGE smile and full of pride xxxx
It's called "Now We are Free" by Lisa Gerrard. Thanks for the nice comments everyone. I'm just about to post another video. Haven't spent much time on this one, but a similar theme so you might enjoy.
and that this is still happening in this day. and that this is not a well wide known issue.
the aboriginies need more attention from the world !! why dont the aboriginies go the united nations and get them to recognise their own state ?? in the same way the palestinians are now doing, and the lakota native american indians are trying to do in the usa.
a legal aboriginal state entity.
fuck white racists and their system still doing it today !
and that this is still happening in this day. and that this is not a well wide known issue.

I doubt if Cathy Freeman had much doubt she would pull this out, sure she felt pressure..tons and tons of pressure for herself, her country and her aboriginal roots...but she was prepared....She always said to herself at that time that "this is my event" So being behind with a little more than 100 meters to go she just put the pedal to the metal, and you can see the results...she blew the competition away....what a strong athlete
You're right, I changed it for the Australian singer at the last minute because it fits a bit better in tempo and its also Australian. Thanks for pointing this out.
"I don't know whether it's joy or relief." That is 'THE' definition of clutch. To come through with so much overwhelming pressure, where anything short of victory would be counted as a huge failure. What a run.
Not to take anything away from Kathy's great run, but think also on Franz Klammer's downhill win back in 1976. He was the last one to come down and was close to crashing twice before winning the gold medal in front of his home crowd.
was actually there and i still get goosebumps watching this

It's called "Now We are Free" by Lisa Gerrard. Thanks for the nice comments everyone. I'm just about to post another video. Haven't spent much time on this one, but a similar theme so you might enjoy.

i am upset more people haven't seen this video.
and that this is still happening in this day. and that this is not a well wide known issue.
the aboriginies need more attention from the world !! why dont the aboriginies go the united nations and get them to recognise their own state ?? in the same way the palestinians are now doing, and the lakota native american indians are trying to do in the usa.
a legal aboriginal state entity.
fuck white racists and their system still doing it today !

Not Enya, it is Lisa Gerrard, an Australian singer.
Deanot01 2 years ago
You're right, I changed it for the Australian singer at the last minute because it fits a bit better in tempo and its also Australian. Thanks for pointing this out.

"I don't know whether it's joy or relief." That is 'THE' definition of clutch. To come through with so much overwhelming pressure, where anything short of victory would be counted as a huge failure. What a run.
rshinnie 2 years ago
Not to take anything away from Kathy's great run, but think also on Franz Klammer's downhill win back in 1976. He was the last one to come down and was close to crashing twice before winning the gold medal in front of his home crowd.

This is one of those moments in time when you remember what you were doing when it happened.
I was jumping up and down in my living room and screaming at the tv. My favourite athlete, Cathy Freeman. What a legend.
