Also, many of the data and pictures commonly employed relate to an earlier famine occurring across the Soviet Union in 1921-22 which was brought on by the Russian Civil War, the legacy of WWI and by German occupation. Also it could very well have been incompetence, not genocide.

Of course no one died in one day, and it did start gradually. But remember that it lasted for a year. A completely health person can survive about a month without food. Taking into account that back in the days people were not that healthy, and also that a big part of the population were small children, massive dying began about half a month through. In addition to that, death rates were increasing every day. It's a tragedy.
