  • im looking in to careers and i am confused. I want to do x ray tech then i herd about this. A hygienist does plenty of hams on work which i like. someone please me advice.

  • i am oral hygienist ..... just finished bachler degree... and i want to go for master degree .. the question is what are the master programs available for me as oral hygienist ? i love oral medicine and i want to take master degree in oral medicine .. plz can anyone tell me CAN I ?

  • I just passed the NBDHE I am so happy. I have a job waiting for me RDH is one of the best career choices ever!!!!!! Best line of work pay is good and everything. I have a full time job with benefits sick leave retirement and everything! I love being a hygienist. For all the negative comments on here just do your research it's the best!

  • Its a good practice to have proper investigation about your oral hygiene. Thanks for the video.

  • ancientsgate -Has very negative comments and most of them are incorrect. You do not need a Masters to teach. You need a BS. RDH teachers get paid less than tradiational clinical hygienists. Maybe this person couldn't advance in this career becasue they have a bad attitude and didn't like the profession. I have a great career and get amzaing job offers and unique opportunities because of my education all the time.

  • Problem with DH is that they usually work part-time = no benefits

  • @missalyfaye17 70,000$ dollars a year

  • @missalyfaye17 If you're nervous about taking hard classes, I won't persuade you!

  • I'm retired now but was an RDH for many years. The money is good but opportunities for advancement are few.

  • @ancientsgate

    You mean in pay?

  • In expanded duties mostly. About the only way an RDH can "branch out" is to go into teaching, which requires a master's degree, or go into sales.

  • I know I'm going to be chewed out by this, but I would really like to have a male hygienist. I'm a woman, and I'm tired of so many females in the profession. Half of them I've had from many different offices all my life were not very nice, plus, I keep getting the ones who are pregnant. What I mean is that she will keep going on maternity leave. Also, why be pregnant and be around those x-ray machines?

  • I'm a senior high school male student. I wanted to become a dental hygienist but when I visited the college that gave the program I was overwhelmed by the male/female ratio. After that It kinda looked like a female job. like being a nurse. Maybe thats the case for others?

  • none sense....

  • Chics would dig being your client. (;

  • It is a female job in that there is very little if any room for advancement, newbies straight out of school are paid virtually the same as those with many years' experience, and you have to work under the thumb of a (usually male) dentist who only wants to squeeze as much productivity (money collected from patients) out of you for as small of a paycheck to you at the end of each week as possible. Most guys wouldn't stand for any of that crap.

  • Yeah, I have decided to become a dentist since I have the grades and the opportunity, thanks for the info.

  • Hey!!

I'm a 23 year old guy who is about to Graduate from Uconn and I'm Seriously considering transferring in to a Dental Hygiene program! Do you think I have a good chance of getting a job as a hygienist if I'm a guy? I'm kind of in touch with my feminine side haha, so I don't think I would mind working around women a lot.

  • i'm 23/m and graduated from a DH program. i found a job immediately. it's awesome pay, but like the lady above me said, advancement is VERY few

  • @jsin273

Thant's what I'm afraid of. I'm currently going to school as a physical sciences major OT. It's a great career, but I'm going to be in school for ever. "sigh"

  • Go to dental school. Srsly. You'll never truly get ahead in DH.

  • @ancientsgate I would if I was much younger. As a mom of one, I am lucky I got my RDH license in 2 years with minimal debt. Now I make $55 an hour and I choose the days I want to work.

  • @skitch05

You shouldn't have a problem. Employers look at your resume and how caring you might be to your patients once employed.

  • anyone know of any schools in or around Los Angeles?

  • Hey me too!! Im at college on the road to becoming a dental hygienist!!

  • what college are you attending?

  • Cambrian College in Sudbury Ontario!

  • I'm attending Portland Community College...this is in Oregon...Are you doing this also? What school?

  • I'm going to a college to become a Dental Hygienist..It's a 2yr program and you graduate with an associates of applied sciences in Dental Hygiene..It's great..!!!

  • I had really bad oral hygiene when I was younger and I'm paying for it now. As much as I dislike going to the dentist, I'm considering becoming a dental hygienists so I can try to help other kids not make the same mistakes I did. Plus the money is sweeeeet.

  • that is EGZACTLY WHY IM DOING IT TOO LOL

  • @cherrycokewine 60 k a year hell ya

  • SHIT! i wanna be a dental hygienist, it looks cool

  • here in montreal a dental hygienist can be paid up to 30$/hour

  • Ugh and theres those patients that absolutely hate coming to the dentist and you barely touch them and they start sweating and complaining that you're too rough! And their lips and tongue and cheeks are so darn tense that you feel like you're going to break your arm trying to retract them! It's like, what the heck did you come here for if you're not going to let me clean your teeth?

  • I are sorry

  • your teeth must be FUCKED UP!!!!

  • lol

  • Its not as they make it seem. They forget to mention that a dental hygienist has to remove the crap from peoples teeth that havent seen a dentist in 20 years .

its not that enjoyable believe me. im AN RDH MY SELF

  • I used to have patients who I swear to God only brushed twice a year, on Xmas and their birthdays, and their birthdays were in December. And this was November. Not. Fun.

  • @ancientsgate woooow lmfao!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wELL i AGREE! wHO HELPS YOU KEEP YOUR TEETH MORE THAN YOUR DENTAL HYGIENIST. WE DESERVE ALL WE MAKE AND SOME- NOT MANY BENIFITS.

  • this makes dental hygiene seem BORING..but let me tell you...it is awesome! GREAT PAY, great people...and you feel good cuz you can help people!

  • YOU CAN HELP PEOPLE?? come on now be realistic if it wasnt for the money nobody would ever wanted to clean crap.

  • Dental hygienist actually help people. They prevent gum deseases and keep teeth healthy. If you can't understand that it's your loss. People are called to be different things..

  • Noone is "called" to be a dental hygienist. It is a gross job. And we do understand that we keep teeth healthy, but we only see the patients twice a year or so, so it's not up to us to keep their teeth healthy in between their visits. We explain to the patients how they should take care of their teeth, but most of them don't listen. Are you even a hygienist? B/c it looks like you're the one that doesn't understand.

  • heh Yeah, it's kind of like picking out the garbage disposal for a living. Hey, maybe I should call the Dirty Jobs guy. Srsly.

  • officespace. classic line

  • @crazychyc it is boring

  • I've always wanted to be a Dental Hygienist but I'm terrified of the dentist! i don't know what it is about the chair that makes me squirm. When I was there the last time I had 4 cavities! My appointment to get them filled is tomorrow, can anyone show me there's nothing to be afraid of??

  • mind you, that pay scale is dependant on ability to do restorative procedures as well...

  • $40-50/hour in the seattle area

  • @liquiddna as long as you can find a position or job.

  • THey make a lot in Ny I make 70K

  • how much they earn in a month or annual as a dental hydienist? =]

  • How much hygienists earn varies WIDELY depending on what part of the country you live in. The West Coast is the best paying with best conditions. WA State has some of the strictest licensure req's and is the only one that req's restorative exam. East Coast states like Alabama, Florida, etc. IMO is the worst in terms of pay, working conds, etc.

  • Wow i wanna be a dental hydienist
