I meant all of Small Faces - and Faces, oddly - were inducted into the Hall of Fame: Steve, Ronnie, Kenney & Mac plus Rod & Woody. I think that's odd and I'm sure Rod will upstage them all, but at least they are in! I agree with you about Small Faces being rock n roll at its best!
The funny thing is that the guitar Frampton's playing is a 61' Les Paul Custom (yes, it IS a Les Paul Custom, even though it looks like an SG, search for it and you'll see!).
@roaringwaterbay The great Steve Marriott died in a house fire in England in 1991, just after returning from recording two songs with Frampton in LA. Ronnie Lane died of MS in 1997. Ian "Mac" McLagen is alive and well and living in Austin, TX. He plays in the Bump Band and also tours with the Faces (minus Rod Stewart & Ronnie Lane), along with drummer Kenney Jones. They were just inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame.
@lkmits just Ian McLagen and Kenny Jones made it into the Hall of Fame? The Small Faces as a whole should be in it. Thanks for the info. I live about 80 miles from where Ronny Lane is buried. Rock -n- roll at some of its best as done by the Small Faces.
@lkmits you know that reminds me that a version of "Canned Heat" is on the oldies touring circuit, but the only original member in the band is the drummer. i really don't consider these re-tread versions much like the original version of the band at all. maybe the bump band is more in line with the original Faces, i don't know. i haven't seen or heard them. the original Small Faces really do belong in the Hall of Fame.
@roaringwaterbay The Bump Band is Ian's own band -no relation to the Faces. Mark Andes (Spirit, Heart) played bass in it at one point. The Faces had a European tour last year and 3 of the 5 were included: Mac on keyboards, Kenney on drums, Woody on guitar. Obviously Ronnie Lane is no longer with us, so they had Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols) on bass. The biggest difference was the singer since Rod wasn't interested. They had Mick Hucknall from Simply Red.
The reason Humble Pie is not there, the R& R Hall of fame is a click started by writters from Rolling Stone Magazine if they don't like you, you don't get in!!!
Awesome band what a sound and the best thing about them was when live they sounded as just as good. Saw them three time Rainbow and the Sundown in Edmonton Those guys could really play and had the true passion for the music they performed, miss them so much Rock On Steve Greg for ever!!!!!!!
@icecreamforcrowhurst Actually, the bass player in this video is Greg Ridley; he was in a band called Spooky Tooth. They had a song called, "Better By You, Better Than Me", which was later cover by Judas Priest. But I do see a similarity between him and Aerosmith's bassist, Tom Hamilton.
The late Steve Marriott was one of the best live performers I had the good fortune of seeing....These guys were as good as anyone from that period....One of the two most under-rated bands of the sixties and seventies...the other being Free....and by the way...It is the Ballad of Shakey Jake...not the BAG of Shakey Jake.
@ashillbeige loved your comments! To me NO ONE will EVER top Marriott!! He was the consumate rock musician PERIOD.He could could play any style, sing any style & had a natural raw crazy grace & charm like none else ever. Even at the end when the suits & hanger's on helped destroy him Marriott NEVER COMPRISED his music or spirit. He lived breathed & died for his music at his detrement.. Disrespected, betrayed by peers & walked on he never lost his love for the music! I will ALWAYS miss him
The fact that neither of Steve Marriott's band is not in the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" shows just what a sham that particular organization is. Music critics, the absolute scum of the earth! I rate them them right down there with sportswriters, politicians, and used car salesmen...
Loved this raunchy crunchy version. The combination of Marriot's harp and Frampton's solo in the last minute are quintessential Humble Pie. Amazing how mature Frampton's playing is at such a young age. Marriot as usual shows his passion for the music as his body language tells the whole story. Always a treat watching this band doing what they love.
i saw steve marriot's packet of three band a year or so before his death, playing small pubs, he still put on a great show - such a talented man - such a loss.
This honestly might be the best 4 piece rock act of all time. No lip synching in this performance either, this is the real deal.
AshillaBeige love your comment, you are right every other musician who was anybody gave Marriott his due. I saw a recent interview with Frampton who said " I will always be Steve Marriott's biggest fan, everytime he opened his mouth, gold dust came out.
Just found this. Vintage Humble Pie. Steve Marriott on Vocals. Greg Ridley on bass. Frampton on the side doin the jazz thing on guitar. Jerry Shirly on drums. Great!
I was lucky enough to see Humble Pie blow Grand Funk Railroad off stage in 1971 at the Hyde Park free festival. And I'd only gone that day just to see GRF play. Marriott and Co. changed my life that day
Whatever Clapton says about Blind Faith,I'm absolutely convinced that the first time I ever heard the tag 'super group' was in reference to Humble Pie.
@AshillaBeige Steve was a gifted one of a kind dude . Charisma flowed out of that guy . I really hated to see that brilliant bright light that was Marriott dim and burn out like he did . The drugs were robbing him of that wonderful personality and we could nt help . I saw him in a barroom in Myrtle Beach in the 80s and he was so cool and played so hard for us all .I don't think he really understood how much some of us looked up to him . And not just hacks like me but established stars also .
Frampton's gift is that he always knew how to underscore a vocal line with the right guitar incentives when he wasn't solo'ing. Interesting you can hear his trade mark riff's in this song that you can hear in later solo tracks. Beautiful stuff. Thanks muchly for posting.
@wouldntyoulike2know All kudos and respect to Steve too (LOVE your background by the way!), but it's always been about the beautiful man-angel Peter for me......

@Evoken13 Those are Orange/Matamps, not Oranges. Very big difference in sound although neither of them are anything special. They are very cool looking. They were used as the backline for this show.
@shanestt I know bro.....i've owned a Matamp era and a Gibson reissue from the mid 90's. They say "Orange" on the front; so I call em Oranges. Nothing special? well bro, that's your opinion and you're certainly entitled to it. I'd take my old Orange 120 back in a heartbeat !!!!!
Hmmm. Three humbucking pick-ups on a white Gibson SG. Wonderful gritty sound. Part of the reason this is such a great performance by Frampton. I can't remember - did Frampton initially experiment with the triple pick-ups on the SG? What's the tail-piece below the pick-ups?
And Greg Ridley is so friggin solid! His runs during Marriot's harp solo and Frampton's solo are classic Ridley. Thanks to 12stringsforme for posting this and the Say No More video (my all time favorite).
Thats actually a early sixties Les Paul Custom or a mid sixties SG Custom. Gibson changed the shape of the les paul in 1960 but Les didn't like it so they changed the name to SG in 63 . they didn't start making normal Les Pauls again until 68. the tail piece is the gibson vibrato bar and judging by the style of it I would say this is a 1962 or 63. this is a great clip.
I love Pie's sound, too, especially live. Thanks for more info. Which interview? I used to sneak off with my brother's Guitar Player magazines in the 70s, but I can't remember the details.
That interview was from the net, it was quite recent Peter's interview. I stumbled on it when I was searching some information about The Pie and Marriott.
Oh man in the 70's I wasn't even born :'(
I remember that he was also talking about his later Black Beauty which he got from the fan in 1970 so after that he switched from SG to 1954 LP Custom.
Don't feel bad about missing the 70s. The music in the early half was amazing, but by the mid-70s when I got to go to a few concerts, most were in huge arenas with lousy sound. Don't get me wrong - I'm grateful for the experiences I had and envy people who saw Humble Pie or the Who in 1971. But don't forget, the 70s also gave us Abba and Barry Manilow!!! Every generation has it's musical dark side as well as sincere tunage from the gut. Thanks for the additional info on the guitars.
Found the interview and enjoyed it. Especially reading that this SG is back in Frampton's hands. Also visited your site and it's very tasteful. And don't worry about your English - it's fine and I admire you for being able to communicate in more than one language. What is your first language?
I'm glad you found and enjoyed that interview, sometimes you can read interesting stuff on the net. I remember that I also read that Marriott bought his 1959 Gibson Les Paul in US and later he discovered that it was the same guitar which had been stolen from his mate Keith Richards. :-)
Thanks for setting me straight. I really appreciate it. Not sure why I care, but the details fascinate me. Wish I could've heard that guitar in person.
@madmexarts Hey, man, I'm not saying that people who know better underrate the band. Steve Marriott's one of the best rock singers ever. But there are a lot of people who -should- know better that don't talk enough about how good these guys were or give them the props they should get. They were that fucking good.
You Brits had it made with so many great performances on t.v. Sure we had some in the states too but, lets face it, you guys had the Pie, Zep, the Faces, Purple, Slade, Quo, Mott, UFO, Free, SAHB, on and on, on the telly almost nightly. All we had was Midnight Special and DK's Rock Concert.
yeah but you had the doors, the beach boys(pet sounds) crosby stills and nash young(i know young was canadian)sly stone .but yeah the brits showed the world how to rock and roll
Tx for posting. We have to thank German & French TV for not hitting the wipe button after edit. The Beeb has mislaid and wiped so much. I could list a shedfull of performances sent up the swanee.

Tx for posting. We have to thank German & French TV for not hitting the wipe button after edit. The Beeb has mislaid and wiped so much. I could list a shedfull of performances sent up the swanee.
