This is how the world is, but on class grounds, justified by the idea of different ability as innate, this film was just saying that the idea of genetic differences of ability is a new justification for what is an effect of social organisation realised via such ideas. Reality is as this film portrays it but the rich buy credentials that prove their merit. Remember the Wizard of Oz where the Scarecrow wants a brain and they give him a certificate.
I loved the movie the first time I saw it, but always wondered why Vincent's parents didn't get him a heart operation/transplant? If he had a 99% chance of having a heart condition, surgery or a transplant seems like a logical solution. Of course they might not have had the money, but they looked like they lived pretty well, so someone should've had insurance to cover it. Of course then there would be no inspiring story... :)
The Exchange Between Vincent and Anton at GATTACA is one of the most powerful scenes...that and Jerome and Vincents scenes were phenomenal, although, the whole movie is masterful really...
you forgot my personal favorite line that goes to something like "you work so hard to get away from a place, but when you finally get a chance to leave, you find a reason to stay"
about human beings and their essence, which is to achieve their dreams no matter what, even if they seem unreachable: it is we who decide what we can or what we can't do. Maybe Gattaca hasn't touched everyone, but I'm sure it has changed some lives.
I remember when I bought the movie a few years ago, it was completely random but I felt attracted by it, though the jacket was not particularly beautiful, and though I hadn't even read what the story was about. I watched it as soon as I came home and... there is not a single word to describe how I felt at the end, my face was all covered in tears. Gattaca is not only a movie, it is a poem about life and its beauties, -
@Quyhm Well said. Even over the years, still remained as my favorite movie of all time, which somewhat compelled me to make this video. Just glad people have an appreciation of this movie as I do.
@ahmettopacoglu45hotm I understand the symbolism, but I'm just wondering how the genetically-modified-to-perfection brother couldn't beat his imperfect brother.
@FlentOrbix1138 because my friend, life and human staff don't consist only of maths. there are things in the world stronger than physical advantages. if you do some research about history, you'll see what I mean. to be more specific just look into the war history. there are many wars that ended in favour of the (seemingly) weaker side. it's this inspirational theme that make people follow their hopes I guess, at least for me ;)
For memorable reasons I guess, in contrast to the motif of single stands of hair throughout the movie (in relation to one's DNA profile), this one is a keepsake for Jerome/Vincent and the whole 'dream' they shared in those years.
the music really supports the emotional lines at some parts. Like "I was never more certain how far away I was from my goal when I was standing right beside it."
I can't watch the ending of this movie without crying. It's an amazing movie in so many ways and I don't care how many times I see it,I watch it with the same enthusiasm I had the first time I saw it.
Utopia: Humans are colonising (or at least visiting) Titan, electric cars, the elimination of genetic diseases and the Human genome is so well understood you can get a genetic 'score'.
i find certain things more moving than other people i dont think there any one else that nearlyy lost my self when he said "your going to miss your flight Vincent" iunno its just perfect to me, kinds for personal reason of always feeling people wont ever trust i can do or achieve any thing, without me batteling for it every step just knowing some one else believes in what you can do no matter what every one else says, iunno just the only other time i almost lost it more was in schindlers list
@nohj1000000 Interesting. I can definitely relate, so much that I'd have to say that anyone who has the ability to appreciate good art doesn't just so for the things which revolve around it; the underlying components, including (especially) what it takes to make those components a reality.
@nohj1000000 Interesting. I can definitely relate, so much that I'd have to say that anyone who has the ability to appreciate good art does typically so for the things which revolve around it; the underlying components, including (especially) what it takes to make those components a reality.
"For future reference: right handed men don't hold it with their left. Just one of those things." There will never be a better line of dialogue than that.
Gattaca and Bladrunner seem to get more recognized as time goes by which is a testament that story and vision are the true qualities of a great Sci-Fi movie.
Jerome is freaking hilarious lol I love it when the investigator and him were at the parking lot and the investigator was looking at him weird cause he's crippled. And he was like "I'm not crippled! I just got done exercising! What's your number?! -follows him- WHAT'S YOUR NUMBER?!" He said something like that haha
One of the best Sci-fi movies I have ever seen. I wouldn't mind seeing Gattaca a second time, or a third time. I'm glad that there wasn't a second Gattaca, or a third, because some of the best movies are left alone. The morals of this movie is hidden between these "Memorable Lines".
Dude, you left out one of the best lines, and it would have been in there if you had just let the "legs wouldn't matter" clip go another 5 seconds. "I'm afraid of heights"
I'd say that's the second-best line in the whole movie!
"So... What's Titan this time of year?" -"They found my eyelash." -"Where?" -"In the corridor." -"Oh, but that could be worse: they could have found it in your eye." "Two samples, two days. Either the suspect went back to the scene of the crime to get a drink of water -but I don't know anybody that thirsty- or he still works there." -"What was he like? -"Who, the cop?" -"Yeah." -"He was just a cop." -"Did you get his name?" -"Actually MY name was the topic of conversation."
This movie is a masterpiece!! It's beautiful and heartbreaking...
Other great quotes:
"Ten fingers, ten toes. That's all that used to matter. Not now."
"Jerome Morrow was never meant to be one step down on the podium. With all I had going for me I was still second best. Me. So how do YOU expect to pull this off?"
"No one exceeds his potential."
"If he did?"
"It would simply mean that we did not accurately gauged his potential in the first place."
"It's funny: you work so hard, you do everything you can to get away from a place and when you finally get your chance to leave... You find a reason to stay." And a couple of funny quotes: "Who lives up there?" "Well, I certainly don't." "How tall are you?" "4'46"." "How tall were you before the accident?" "How are you, Jerome?" "Not bad, Jerome." "How the hell did you get up here?" "Oh, I could always walk: I was faking it."
"Of course they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe Im not leaving; maybe Im going home." Great quote! And it definitely true!
I live this movie and I KNOW what he feels. Genetics still screws with us and even when I touch my dream, I some how feel it's going to be taken away from me. I wish someone could understand me....except only a movie can.
@Ricks550 This is a human condition nearly all have experienced...recommend, though certainly less cerebral, youtub'ing "Rocky Balboa it ain't how hard you can hit" speech. You can only succeed by failing...no one walks and stands on their first attempt.
My biggest aversion to allowing genetic engineering, the type shown in this film, is it will just become another tool of rich people to further distance themselves from the poor or middle class.
My two favourites would be the "I was never more certain of how far away I was from my goal, then when I was standing right beside it" and the "You wanna know how I did it?! This is how I did it! I never saved anything for the swim back!"
"It's funny, you work so hard, you do everything you can to get away from a place, and when you finally get your chance to leave, you find a reason to stay."
