When I first read The Watchmen what got to me was that the entire way through I was rooting for Ozymandias/Veidt, in retrospect. But there's that last moment, right before Rorschach has to be killed, where you just feel like complete and utter shit because you know that the final act for good must be to utterly destroy this uncompromising avatar of truth and justice.
What's one more body in the foundation indeed, but the truth is you can tell that this one body was different.
Didn't see the movie or comic but all I know from the commericals was that I f**king hate Dr. whoever! Rorschach seemed to be the only good guy :( fucking blue man die in a hole!!! >.<
The term "good" is certainly up to interpretation.
In the end, Manhattan and Ozymandias averted catastrophe in the form of another World War, which surely would have resulted in loss of life on a much larger scale.
"The desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy," does it not? Would the destruction of our species as a whole be a preferable alternative to the deaths of a select few? I should hardly think so.
It's easy to hate Dr Manhattan for killing Rorschach to preserve the lies needed for peace - but also consider this - Rorschach telling the -truth- would actually -exonerate- him of all those deaths. Keeping the lie alive - which is his choice - makes the world believe that HE killed those people. He barely cares for humanity, but he does care for them more than he cares for his own -good name-, unlike Veidt.
They're both heroes - just that the viewer is made to identify with Rorschach more.
@Feitan3DS a little girl of six being hacked to bits by a phyco who then threw the remains to his dogs and burned hers clothes in a furnace. Worked for rochach.
@ninjawraith17 You are using the term hero in a bad context around a bad argument. In actuality, Dr. Manhattan is the only superhero. The term hero (which you never used correctly in any respect) is used to show someone who has admirable or noble qualities, and superhero has to do with having powers. Just because Rorschach stuck to his belief of truth doesn't mean the rest of them are "piss-ants." Yes, Veidt's way of protecting humanity was not justice, but sometimes the end justifies the means.
@juli1100 That isn't necessarily true. American troops sacrificed their lives every day in Iraq, but they didn't do that for a truth. Dr. Manhattan sacrificed his own reputation and other's perceptions of him by killing Rorschach, and he did that so humanity as a whole would survive together in harmony without the threat of nuclear war. The definition of hero can be different to every person.
@iFoxdie Lol, yeah I did but i didnt understand it, cus I didnt care actually too much
I was watching this movie with my little brother so I didnt care that much xD but im going to watch it again anywas what did he want to tell the people ?
Yes, he was going to tell the people that it was Ozymandias that killed millions. F*ck every single one of those "heroes," Rorschach was the only true hero. Nite Owl=impotent little piss-ant, Silk Spectre=a teary-eyed waste of oxygen, Dr. Manhattan=a clueless quasi-celestial mess spouting a broken philosophy, and Ozymandias=sat upon an ill constructed throne of 'Holier-than-thou' complexity and insecurity.
@Dropdeadjimi he wanted to show the world that this "invasion" was all just a preochestrated plan by Veidt. Veidt thought by bringing the world to the brink of extinction, he would stop all wars and unite the world againts one common enemy. Rosharch had a problem with that because Veidt just killed around a million people in the name of the greater good, and nobody will know the truth. The comics make it a little bit more easier to undestand =p, though the movie is good too.
you just know this is how batman &supermans last meeting would go down... supes would then leave earth &most likely commit suicide via solar over - exposure or sumthin
"Never compromise, even in the face of Armageddon"
Rorschach wanted to tell the truth, 100%. If we have any respect for the human condition- then Justice must matter. Sure the world may have been destroyed, but mankind has to have its own story - and that element of choice has to be there. Ozzy took away that choice, and thats how he mutated humanity. Rorschach saw through this.
They actually get something right in this movie adaptation and then they make the entire audience laugh when we see the ridiculous rorschach pattern of blood and guts...
Then they add Nite Owl II in there to watch it all, to make it more dramatic.
Rorschach is the most coolest bad-ass hero that the Watchmen's fans ever seen. but since Rorschach never want to live in a world of crime and insanity... he wants to end it all by ending himself. if only Dr. Manhattan didn't kill Rorschach so that he can tell him that the world may be a cruel world... but he can still live it through if he knows the deep truth. but instead, he annihilated Rorschach for good and now Night Owl is depressed. :P
I admire Rorshach's determination to stick to what he believes in. Earlier he says that he must never comprimise or surrender even in the face of armagedon. In the verry end he stuck to that. It wasn't that he didn't want to live in a worldd built around a lie. It was the fact that when he saw Dr Manhattan outside he knew that he couldn't leave without agreeing to what the others were doing. He believed so heavily in justice that he knowingly sealed his own fate in the name of justice.
@EmpathicMimicry For one thing his code wouldn't let him. For another, Dr. Manhattan knows everything that will happen in his own timeline, so, even if Rorschach had kept his mouth shut intending to later reveal the truth, the Dr. would almost certainly know and kill him anyway.
@robirdsfilmmaker I'm a plumber and I agree. Everyday people try to screw me over when I work my butt off to fix their issues. There is more selfishness and evil in people than selflessness and good.
Why would they kill rorschach off he is was probably one of the most complex and well thought through characters ever I think they could've developed his character more, anyone agree?
@TheMightyGub Well he kind of had to. He was going to tell the world the truth of the attack upon New York. That would have started WWIII again and the world would have been reduced to radioactive Ash. He was an interesting character, I prefer Adrian and Dr. Manhattan myself, but his death has its reasons.

I have not seen this movie; however, I have a feeling that Rorschach might be depressed. Those who have seen this movie, am I right? what happened to him?
@MyFluffypenguin It's not really that he was depressed, it's jsut that he sees for the good of the world he needed to die. I'm trying not to spoil too much here, but if you read the book/watch the film, you will see that the death is truly epic because he's not afraid to do waht he has to do.
I love the movies where the ending is so convoluted. Other movies have choppy plots that make everyone hate the bad guy and love the good guy. But this movie played on our ideologies and perspectives; nothing is ever black or white. Do we live in peace driven by fear and lies? Or do we live in conflict driven by truth and understanding? Very powerful message, and one that will haunt me for quite awhile.
@MyFluffypenguin Very much so. However, be ready for violence, gore, and rather blatant images, especially Rorschach's stories. If you watch closely, every character's story takes place in an environment of how they see the world. Rorschach sees the reality of humanity and its ugliness, and his setting mirrors that. The beginning credits are genius, but scene has something to question. Everything is controversial, nothing is good and nothing is bad. I recommend it strongly, but be ready.
I just wached the movie and it was good but the ending was disapointing... The whole character dr manhatan was a big dissonance.... he was 'all knowing' but he changed his mind every 5 minutes... and the plan he realize 5 minutes before he blow up Rorschach was a prior not his friend. Mr know-it-all was going away anyway he just needed to scare the public himself and then who's going to listen to a prison runaway ? ...ow yeah and the main bad-guy was unpunished uh at least there was sex scene;)
I hate Dr. Manhattan just because he's an adulterer, a murderer and a cold SOB! Of course, that's what the story was going for I just wish he got what he deserved for what he did.
oooh so now he screams in pain that his best freind has died? oh ok so from 0:00-1:29 he stands there watching and he never though to have like stood by him?
@TheNitarn@CovertPolitics Rorsach was going to tell the world that Ozymandias destroyed the city's, this would cause nuclear war. killing him prevented nuclear war.
So.... am I the only person here who thought that Ozymandias had the right idea? That in order to save the world from its own self destructive tendencies, that everyone has to band together?
It seems as though everyone is voting for Rorschach, but he'd rather have the world die in nuclear fire with for the right reasons, rather than the world being saved via darker means.
His beliefs would've caused the extinction of the human race.
@herofromthedark The extinction of the human race is the right idea....Earth got along fine before we got here and it would do a lot better with us out of the picture. Rorschach, knowing the full extent of human cruelty, not only for each other but their environment, saw that if humanity were to be saved at all, it needed to be for the right reasons. Yes it is dark, but its the truth. We are a virus and Earth is the body.
@herofromthedark In the movie yeah, but in the book I heard that what actually happened was the east and west decided to start peace talks on their own, realizing that war wasn`t worth the risk of annihilation, but Ozy didn`t know because he was busy with his plan, so millions died for no reason.
I like how after Rorschach says "whats one more body amongst foundations?" Dr. Manhattan has to contemplate his words for a second. I know its a very small, almost meaningless tell but to have a being who can see the future have his motives and decision shaken by the words of a human is pretty powerful and meaningful.
and the ending of this movie is basically religion...making the world afraid of the everpresent destruction of some allmighty being.....*puts tinfoil hat off*
also the character Ozymandias was ranked 25th best villain of all times by the magazine " Wizard "...he was also ranked in other magazines but for some reason Wizard is written in cursiv on wikipedia...maeh
just noticed...Adrian aka Ozymandias...Oz.....The wizard of Oz.....and him and the wizard of Oz are kinda similar...basically pranksters oO...I don't know...the more shit you watch of hollywood movies the weirder it gets...all of it pointing towards ancient egyptian shit
Something I wished the clip would have included was that Rorschach's "body" was in the shape of a Rorschach pattern, which was interesting. Intensely-sad, but interesting.
I like this much better than what happened in the comic. I agree that it was much better showing that someone cared about whether he lived or died. Much more dramatic. One of my favorite scenes and one of the best in the movie.
@MoTherfucKerPsYcho I read the novel before seeing the movie and the movie more than captured the feel of the book, it actually enhanced a lot of what the graphic novel did. The only criticism I have of the movie is that they didn't put shorts on Dr. Manhattan, that probably would have staved off a lot of the criticism.
I'm beginning to think that it was actually a good theing that Rorschach got killed, otherwise if Dan and Laurie had kids he would have been a really creepy uncle figure.
Kids: Hey Uncle Rorschach!
Rorschach: Hello there kids. Wanna hear a joke?
Dan: Hold on a sec Rorschach, last time you told them a joke they wouldn't stop cryin for 3 hours.
Rorschach: No this one's good I promise.
Dan: Alright, if you insist.
Rorschach; Alright kids, a man goes to the doctor, says he's depressed...
I cried at this part, in both the comic and movie... was the first graphic novel/comic i ever read, and by far the very best, with the Long Halloween at a close second.
@wallaceincorporated coz rorschach asked him to get some pants! "What are you waiting for?!! GET SOME PANTS!" hahahahahaha! I HATE DR.MANHATTAN GIANT BLUE DICK! RORSCHACH FOREVER!!
the sad bit is that John knew he would kill Walter an yet he could not stop himself. an Dan in the comic did not know his partner is dead or tat John killed him. i think it was more powerful that he saw Walters death because in the end he was not Rorscach he was Walter Kovacs. i ended up doing a phyc paper on him 4 school his peronality and relationsips alone r vary complicated
any of u trying to understand why this is so powerful is because of the different views adrian killed millions with a nuclear blast that was reminiscent to manhattens killing people round the world because this might resolve the tension between the powers, improbable but logical. despite the need of the many out way the need of the few rorschach thought that millions was still significant, irony is rorschach was the most human, having exposed adrian could lead to war again, but the journal lives

Of course, that's what the story was going for I just wish he got what he deserved for what he did.

in good stories it's usually the best character that gets killed off

Rorschach didn't want to live in a world/society built around a lie.

Rorschach was the only man of integrity in this movie. But that's the way truth dies also in reality... very poetic.
CovertPolitics 2 months ago 7
why did he kill him? i´m not a smart guy.....
TheNitarn 2 months ago
@TheNitarn @CovertPolitics Rorsach was going to tell the world that Ozymandias destroyed the city's, this would cause nuclear war. killing him prevented nuclear war.
Aizsaule 2 months ago
So.... am I the only person here who thought that Ozymandias had the right idea? That in order to save the world from its own self destructive tendencies, that everyone has to band together?
It seems as though everyone is voting for Rorschach, but he'd rather have the world die in nuclear fire with for the right reasons, rather than the world being saved via darker means.
His beliefs would've caused the extinction of the human race.
I think Ozy made the right call.
herofromthedark 2 months ago
@herofromthedark The extinction of the human race is the right idea....Earth got along fine before we got here and it would do a lot better with us out of the picture. Rorschach, knowing the full extent of human cruelty, not only for each other but their environment, saw that if humanity were to be saved at all, it needed to be for the right reasons. Yes it is dark, but its the truth. We are a virus and Earth is the body.
vhhsairsoft 2 months ago
@vhhsairsoft
Wait... if we're the virus... then does that make Agent Smith the cure? :3
herofromthedark 2 months ago
@herofromthedark In the movie yeah, but in the book I heard that what actually happened was the east and west decided to start peace talks on their own, realizing that war wasn`t worth the risk of annihilation, but Ozy didn`t know because he was busy with his plan, so millions died for no reason.

dr.manhattan: i can change almost anything but i can't change human nature.

Slockry 2 months ago
I like how after Rorschach says "whats one more body amongst foundations?" Dr. Manhattan has to contemplate his words for a second. I know its a very small, almost meaningless tell but to have a being who can see the future have his motives and decision shaken by the words of a human is pretty powerful and meaningful.

This is one of the few truly well done scenes in this otherwise mediocre film. Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach was inspired casting.
redrabbitjohnson 3 months ago
@redrabbitjohnson is it mediocre? I actually never read the comics, probably that's why I think is good.
MoTherfucKerPsYcho 2 months ago
@MoTherfucKerPsYcho I read the novel before seeing the movie and the movie more than captured the feel of the book, it actually enhanced a lot of what the graphic novel did. The only criticism I have of the movie is that they didn't put shorts on Dr. Manhattan, that probably would have staved off a lot of the criticism.
halvor311 2 months ago
I'm beginning to think that it was actually a good theing that Rorschach got killed, otherwise if Dan and Laurie had kids he would have been a really creepy uncle figure.
Kids: Hey Uncle Rorschach!
Rorschach: Hello there kids. Wanna hear a joke?
Dan: Hold on a sec Rorschach, last time you told them a joke they wouldn't stop cryin for 3 hours.
Rorschach: No this one's good I promise.
Dan: Alright, if you insist.
Rorschach; Alright kids, a man goes to the doctor, says he's depressed...

the sad bit is that John knew he would kill Walter an yet he could not stop himself. an Dan in the comic did not know his partner is dead or tat John killed him. i think it was more powerful that he saw Walters death because in the end he was not Rorscach he was Walter Kovacs. i ended up doing a phyc paper on him 4 school his peronality and relationsips alone r vary complicated

any of u trying to understand why this is so powerful is because of the different views adrian killed millions with a nuclear blast that was reminiscent to manhattens killing people round the world because this might resolve the tension between the powers, improbable but logical. despite the need of the many out way the need of the few rorschach thought that millions was still significant, irony is rorschach was the most human, having exposed adrian could lead to war again, but the journal lives
