GDP is a less useful tool for analysing the effect of politics on the people (the basis of democracy is meant to be the people rather than the aristocracy, right?) than average lifespan, which receded in Russia by about 8 years since the collapse of Communism.
kasparov talking about democracy is laughable.. He is just mad Putin kicked out Berezovsky and Khorodovsky out of political influence and replaced the fool Yeltsin.
I only believe in democracy if it's democracy of all species on planet earth.
I was watching a documentary yesterday, and it was trying to be eco-friendly. But they showed a woman at one point complaining about aggressive "gangs" attacking her.
It turns out, the gangs were monkeys, and she was trying to hit them with sticks to keep them off "her" fruit stall. But how should she say it is HER stall and her property? Why is it not the monkeys just as much? Why can the monkeys not own property?
Democracy on a national level is overrated IMO, it just descends in2 farce - tho there shud b sum way of the populous removing bad leaders. Democracy on a local level is much more important - the issues dealt with on a federal level shud be approached thru sumting mor akin 2 the scientific method - 2 vote on a national level, it is my opinion that one shud have 2 pass a test showing a min. level of understanding of relevant issues. That brings with it problems, but it wud clean things up some.
This is a terrible idea. As if one test could encompass the entire political spectrum of opinions? Who would even write such a test? In the past, such tests have been used to deny black people the right to vote by proxy, because if they were permitted to attend education it was inferior to the education enjoyed by the whites - "Jim Crow" laws. When politicians say that their political theory is inerrant (that of Gobineau or Marx, for example)... the results are apparent.
bigthink should make a television program, and Mark Zuckerberg should pay for it ^^

All good, but his party advocates the first past the post system which doesn't strike me as very democratic.

Putin admires and openly models himself after Stalin - and is MORE popular for it in Russia.

Most nations are oligarchies - some more overt than others is all.
Everyones thinking short-term profits and positioning themselves for the next election.

@LazarusCato Agreed.
People should have to past a mental exam, and a political[or history] class to vote.
