look at the M15. great little boat that sails as good as an M17 or Sage 17.
the M15 weights about 850lbs so need to reduce sail before M17 or Sage 17.
when i had a M15, i sailed full main and working jib until about 12-13knots. then single reef main up to 15-17 knots. double reefed main to 20 or so knots. above 20kts need a storm jib. with small jib can sail up to 25 kts.
don't sail the M15 with only a jib or main going to weather. this does not work well with the 3/4 rig.
only about 20 montgomery 23s were built. i've sailed with seven of these boats.
about one or two come on the market every year ... but about 10 have changed hands in the past five years so i don't know how many more will appear for a while.
most of those sold in the last few years have needed some TLC.
the seven i've sailed with are loved and will likely sell for $30K-$40K if/when they come onto the market.
the montgomery is a great boat designed by lyle hess and built by jerry montgomery. i also suggest you look at jerry's latest design - internet search for sage 17
i had the honor of sailing with jerry m. february 2011. he is a great man and great sailer.
wind was about 15-18 into a usual chop you get on rosario strait when the wind is against the tide. had a 110 jib with full main set a out to dump some wind (traveler was set leeward side). fully under control and a great run!
I am deciding that the next boat for me is the Monty, either 17 or if I get rich, the 23. I have never had a trailerable sailboat before, but after researching the web and watching videos of your 17 sailing around my cruising grounds I am pretty sure it will be a good match. Thank you for posting the video, but I have one question for you.... don't you ever reef?
