I grew up in Mar Vista, made my way to Venice every weekend from 1963 on to surf next to the Santa Monica Pier. Back then Venice boardwalk was a foot pathway along the sand, no concrete back then, only the locals infront of old homes lining the beach. I remember the old "Gas House" where all the old left over beatnicks would lay around outside the place and say "cool daddy oh" as we passed by with our big gun surfboards 10' 6" was mine Dewey Weber Great Memories from back then...............
@neoshoman There's a scene in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" where Hunter S Thimpson is remenising over the late 60's... You just reminded me of it... Was a special time that no amount of books or documentaries could sum up of what it was like to actually be there in that very special time and place.
i think a lot about planting seeds in the night and growing huge trees and then it being a dream but in the morning tiny plants have sprouted there, so it wasn't a dream! it was only a dream!
Oh, thank you for posting this...'An American Prayer' is my favourite Doors album and this is one of the best song's. Also combined with the scenes from Venice Beach in the 60's is really neat, almost dreamy :). I love Jim so much, :( he was a wonderful poet
Jim said that poetry should have no true meaning, but should be left up to interpretation. Thats just what he said, although I believe he had specific meanings for his writings if for noone else than himself, but written loosely and open for interpretation- he also said it should make you think
birdman is birdman of alcatraz, robert stroud. prisoner to jim morrison would be anyone enjoying the quaint and imprisoning rudiments of daily working class life and ideals. a wordman is exempt from these laborious and monotonous lifestyles.
The song's called "Curses, Invocations," dude - the clue's in the title. Some great verse from Morrison in this one.. "I'll always be a word man, better than a word man"? Nice
I think a lot of jims words are more truthful now then when he wrote them

@misestrelka. there's a saying that "nobody knows what poetry means, it just makes sense in time".
for some reason i can hear jims voice delivering that line!
i'll spare you the rest of my rambling :-) peace.

"i'll always be a word man, better than a birdman".
Meaning: He'll always be a poet, better than a singer.
bainsgate 3 years ago 11

I like the last part of the poem about words.
I just don't get the line:
"I will always be a word man,
Better than a birdman"
What does that mean? I don't get it. Is it cause he's high as a bird? Anyone know?
