After watching this video a number of times I want to revise my comments. This is absolutely brilliant! The way you have mixed the pictures with the song is very moving. The photgraph at the end with the actual General Custer was a great touch. Bravo to you and to all the men and women who have served and are currently serving our great country.
@25FIREBALL He said that during the Civil War at the battle of Gettysburgh, leading a bunch of soldiers from Michigan against Confederate soldiers commanded by Jubal Early. It was a pretty decisive action that is overlooked from that particular battle that did much to change the course of the battle and ultimately history.
And all he said was "c'mon you Wolverines" or something to that effect.
The 7th Cavalry was entrapped the day after the Wounded Knee Massacre. The 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers rescued the 7th Cavalry.
Read the novel, Rescue at Pine ridge, the story of the rescue of the famed 7th Cavalry by the Buffalo Soldiers, and visit website; rescue at pine ridge. com. The novel embodies Native Americans, Outlaws and Buffalo Soldiers, in the days of the Native American Wars with the approach USA. Story is about, brutality, compassion, reprisal, bravery, heroism and gallantry.
"Gary Owen" also has a long musical history with the old Irish 69th New York ---- which gained fame in the Civil War as part of the Irish Brigade, in both World War as the 165th Infantry, On Sept. 11, 2001, the now 1st Bn. 69tth Inf., was the first military unit to respond to the attack on the World Trade Center and later in Iraq, it conduct under fire earned a special congressional resolution in salute of the unit's bravery.
Did anyone know that the 1st of the 7th Air Cav would say " Gary Owen" as greeting when Enlisted and Officers would meet each other in place of the daily morning - afternoon or evening greeting. Anyone else know what W.O.C. class was the only warrant officer class allowed to use in during flight training at Ft Walters TX in 1968?
Actually I think his last words were "Oh well off we go to the Fiddler's Green!" When anyone tangles with the Cav they find out what an expensive cut of meat we are. An Iraqi Republican Guards Armored Brigade faced a Troop of Armored Cavalry and were used for a live fire excercise. A hint to who have to face U.S. Cavalry on the battle. Run like hell or pay tje price!!!
@ronaldweasleyfan55 LOL and to think I thought it was "OMG were the bloody hell did all them darn indians come from". Nice tune and vid mate ty for posting
@ronaldweasleyfan55 I believe that the last song Custer heard was Garry Owen since it was played at the Little Big Horn. Custer led the 7th US cavalry there. During his time in the Civil War he led the Michigan Cavalry Brigade from Gettysburg through 1864. It was only in the Civil War that Custer would have called his troops Wolverines since they were mostly from Michigan.
@wemonk The Crowe scouts that thought Custer was crazy for attacking a village that size, and refused to go with him. Later told Reno's command that those were the last words spoken by "Yellow Hair". Did you know that all the scouts were sent to Florida to resorvations AND most of them died within a month from yellow fevor or maleria? They also had their ranks and millitary pay revoked. I'm not trying to stir-up anything but it IS a little known fact.
@ginko27 not to mess with you, but didn't everyone die at this battle? i could be wrong about that. if so, how would anyone know what his or anyone at that battle said last?
@Gekmdal Well, to answer you question: Yes, and No. All of the men who rode into battle with Custer died, but Reno's men, men who were left behind with Custer's supplies, and the Crowe scouts that followed him right up to the point he charged all lived. The Crowe scouts were going to follow him into battle, but they predicted their own death and had their funerals. Custer decided that they were unnerving his men and discharged them. As they left they remembered Custer's words.
@Gekmdal Until recently the Indian side has been overlooked. Archeologists digging at the site just couldn't piece together the exact rout of retreat Custer and his men took, now by asking the descendants of the Sioux to repeat stories passed down they found the EXACT rout, and even found out that the soldiers held together FAR longer than thought before they broke! Custer rammed a small unequipped detachment of his men into a hornet's nest of Sioux warriors. He had more guts than brains
The ONLY survivor of the battle was a horse. Members of the 7th that did not go to the Little Bighorn do NOT qualify as "survivors" by any objective standard!
How about the thousands of Indians? I do believe they survived. in fact, this became a big issue in the early 70's. Custer's horse is on display at the Kansan University museum, and was signed as the Sole Survivor. There is Haskell Indian College there in town, and they raised a BIG STINK about it. The sign was changed to the Sole White Survivor.
Of course, the context of my comments was referring to the 7th Cav....duhhhh! Of course the Indians survived...winners of battles usually do.
People get read anal about things like this. The thing about the horse is ridiculous, but that's what people do in a "politically correct" society such as ours.
@misiekszuper Those were his last KNOWN words. They were told by his Crow scouts that he dismissed from battle and who watched him ride off. As to what he said after that, who knows? BTW his Indian scouts were the last people to see him alive before he decided to attack the village and they were all but ignored until recent times when old interviews were re-published. Lastly, many young braves remembered an officer who they thought was "Curley Hair", yell out an order to shoot the horses.
Oh, yea there is a chance he DIDN't say that but that's what his Crowe scouts said he said right before they got the heck outta there. Oh, and if you haven't read about his one sided fight at Gettysburg, you should read it! It was a kind of preveiw of Littlebighorn only he won! I belive it was 3 to 1 odds in Stewart's favor? If Jeb had won Longstreet's troops were to be diverted to take Culp's Hill and Pickett's charge would never had happened! In a way Custer WON GETTYSBURG!
