LA BARTOLI SE ATREVE CON TODO, ES UN HORROR ESCUCHAR SU INTERPRETACIÓN, TACONEO INCLUIDO. ESTO TAMBIÉN LO HA APRENDIDO DE LA MALIBRAN Ó DE SU HERMANA LA VIARDOT ?
I quite like it .. she wld turn Carmen into an opera buffa and it'd be brilliant. No she wouldn't really make a good Carmen but in a recital you can sing whatever you want! :)
è un mezzosoprano e ha bisogno del microfono per cantare carmen al teatro olimpionico di vicenza accompagnata dal pianoforte... Dai cavolo, lei è adorabile e tutto, ma la voce se la mangia via.
Simply the most complete female operatic voice at the moment. I tend to shy away from classical vocal works but her 2010 "Sacrificium" CD is mind-bogglingly beautiful and engaging. Not just her range & technique but specifically what distinguishes an artist: Passion and integrity.
I love Ceci, and who cares if she's not really suited for the role of Carmen? It's nice when opera singers sing arias in concert which they can't sing the whole role of, because they get to put their own spin on them. Renee Fleming's voice can't take on Tosca or Butterfly, but she sings a heart-rending "Vissi d'Arte" and "Un Bel Di." Some purists can't appreciate a beautiful voice singing beautiful music because it isn't exactly the way they're used to hearing it, but I say Brava Bartoli!
@carminacat93 THANK YOU! I could not agree more completely. That's what concert performances are about- it's a chance for a singer to step outside their wheelhouse and have a bit of fun, to enjoy things (s)he doesn't get the chance to do in the stage career. I think too often people forget that singers are people, not public property. We don't necessarily want to do the same thing over and over again just because it's what people want- we have the right to use OUR voices in the way WE want to!
She should show more respect for this music! She sang this aria as she was singing Rosina and nothing to do with that! This is Carmen not Carclown. CHE SCHIFO!
@Egreco26 She can sing the way she wants first of all for who she is. And second because music is a subjective and free art, actually any kind of art is meant to free people not to restrict them. The issue is whether you like her art interpretation or not, though i assure you that you're one of the very few persons that don't.
I think that Maria Callas plays Carmen too naively and she doesn't bring out the real character of Carmen as a Gitana in her freedom to do whatever she likes in her changing moods...I also admit that the voice of Callas from her nature is more Carmenlike than Bartoli's, but Bartoli is a wonderful actress in this role. Most of all I prefer the Carmen of Grace Bumbry under Karajan, a really wonderful scenery....
voce e emozione fuori repertorio, Bartoli si immagina la Carmen senza voce, con aria nella voce, ignora che esiste uno stile da rispettare ...per me una "interpretazione"con poco gusto.
@rlee1976 Yeah, and she sounds like she's saying "Mon Caire (my Cairo!) est libre comme l'air" What's worse is: "Ch'irai danser la séguedille, ch'irai chez mon ami Lilas Pastia". All her J's sound like CH's! It makes her sound Swiss!!!
But what an amazing stage presence and I love that she's not afraid to use all the colours in her palette, to the point where it's almost Sprechgesang! I love her chutzpah!
kooky...i don't like the quality of her voice or her half assed effort here, but I think this stands out for its quirkiness alone...Carmen is probably nuts so this might be a good interpretation in that regard
This is Cecilia, but surely NOT Carmen. What's up with the crooning? Ok, she's got the flamenco steps, yes-- but there's this consistent thread of breathy vocalism that characterizes Bartoli's singing. I don't get it, that's the sort of singing that works well with a microphone, but how does that work live with a piano in a big room? With an orchestra? Back in the early 90's, I was sold. Not so sure about now. Some folks screamed "Brava!!!" so I guess she'll have an audience for a while yet.
She has to be one of the best mezzos ever! Besides, she's so adorable and charismatic, qualities that not every singer posses but every single one desires.
I LOVE Bartoli. Whether she could sustain this role in a large theater is an open question. But here she is delightful -- she is both sexy and sweet, and that combination is irresistible:) --
I like that she is actually singing the meaning of the words- she's playing the character, rather than just making a pretty sound. That takes a whole lot more work than just standing and thinking about vocal production. Whether or not I agree with her interpretation, Brava- she's keeping it real, alive, and fresh for herself and for those who appreciate the art.
Attn: Haters of Ms. Bartoli - you're wanted in the HAS-BEEN department!
The Lovely Lady is the BEST EVER - and a genuinely nice person, ta boot!
I met her in Rome, at an after-concert fete @Teatro dell'Opera. She signed my progamme - which now is framed & displayed proudly in my trumpet-practise room (only temp-controlled room in the house) - she also encouraged me to "keep practising your trpt"!!!
BTW - she's right - the more I practise, the better it sounds... & vice-versa.
In my view, the true essence of Carmen captures the earthy coquettish sexual allure of Julia Migenes combined with the magnetic dominance of Maria Callas/Agnes Baltsa in the final act. Carmen is a fully dimensional, multi faceted character who is able to control others thru light hearted flirtation, fully illicit behaviour and a blatant refusal to yield. I adore listening to Cecelia and she is a true vocal genius in 18th cent music but she is too girl next door for Carmen.
Interesting. Don't know if I quite agree with her choice of breath. Wonderful performance, though. Very fun to watch! She really became the character.
you really are ignorant if all you can do is suggest listening to Callas!
I suppose you dislike Bartoli sing casta diva too?
They have different voices, different personalities and different interpretations of this song! This was an encore... not totally planned, you expect some mistakes!
The disagreement is primarily centered on sense of life. I will explain. I expect a strong, proud, victorious woman singing this..and a little coquetishly I might add. She gave me nothing; sloppy, underperfomed, terrible. Callas on the other hand was IT. Also, when you start "expecting mistakes" why listen to this perfomance.
Callas was all; actress and singer. Many dispute that she was more of an actress than a singer, this is not so. Listen to Callas' earlier recordings and admire the greatness and power of her voice; unmistakable, unique and legendary. Bartoli is what modern life can (unfortunately) give at the moment.
@freezzertime Absolute bollocks. Callas was a great actress for sure. But a great singer? No. No. No. Too much wobble in the upper register, and too much throat. She often sounded as if she was gargling mouthwash. Bartoli on the other hand is impressive vocally, and can sing Callas out of another continent, after all there're not many singers with Bartoli's range or passion! I've heard many recordings of Callas, and I find that throaty fault time and again which I find hugely off-putting.
@freezzertime i disagree. I love Maria Callas but keep in mind that this was a rather close up version of a much larger event. Her little nuances are meant to communicate to the back of the house, so they look sloppier those of us right in her face. Even with some sloppiness, Carmen is not supposed to be a model. The opera was based in romantic exoticism, and at the time gypsies were alluring because of their lifestyle and how different they were from the rest of European culture. I liked it.

Oh my god! She is wonderful! I love her voice! She´s one of the best mezzo voices I´ve ever heard! =) Thank´s for the video! And Carmen!!! Excelent Opera!
I have to tell the truth. The beginning of this was OK but at the end she made the ugliest face and looked really, really mad. My friend laughed uncontrollably the last 30seconds of this clip. So not sexy. She can sing very well, but she should never play a mad Carmen.
I know the difference between a recital and and an actual role in an opera.I am sure you are an advid fan of this lady so your opinion will be tainted. Although the singing was good, my opinion still stands. This is a funny clip.
Wow! It feels so alive and spontaneous. I think Callas did the same thing in a different way. It's just amazing how many different styles emerge when artists stumble upon the perfect synthesis of music and drama.
you may say what you want about her facial expressions, but she really is the greatest female opera singer of our times :-)) i love her singing to bits!!
Most of the time, I have been put off by her exaggerated facial expressions....but here they just add to her complete artistry. I Can't wait to see her do Carmen. I think this will be the role of her life and she will be one of the best...sexy, flamenco dancing, crazy gypsy woman.
Actually "bravo" is an interjection and has no gender. Bravisimo(a) is and adjetive and has, therefore, gender. I second what AlejandraDark said. Bravo Bartoli!
In English, yes, it is an interjection. In Italian we decline it, and we say "Brav(issim)a" referred to a woman. Going back to this interpretation, it is not bad, but very average. What's all this whispering about (at the beginning)? Every note, soft or loud, has to be placed, no whispering is allowed in serious singing.

I concur...she looks sloppy and well...unsuited for this...I suggest you listen to the TRUE interpretation of this and type in Maria Callas
freezzertime 3 years ago
actually I don't like Maria Callas. Sorry! :-)
mrouxie 3 years ago 7
@mrouxie Thank you! I thought I was the only one. I just don't like her voice...I've tried and tried to like it, but I just don't.

you really are ignorant if all you can do is suggest listening to Callas!
I suppose you dislike Bartoli sing casta diva too?
They have different voices, different personalities and different interpretations of this song! This was an encore... not totally planned, you expect some mistakes!
MissLimLam 3 years ago 3
The disagreement is primarily centered on sense of life. I will explain. I expect a strong, proud, victorious woman singing this..and a little coquetishly I might add. She gave me nothing; sloppy, underperfomed, terrible. Callas on the other hand was IT. Also, when you start "expecting mistakes" why listen to this perfomance.
freezzertime 3 years ago
Yes... Callas certainly was a better actress, but Bartoli is ok, not terribly suited to the song but a good singer nevertheless.
MissLimLam 3 years ago
Callas was all; actress and singer. Many dispute that she was more of an actress than a singer, this is not so. Listen to Callas' earlier recordings and admire the greatness and power of her voice; unmistakable, unique and legendary. Bartoli is what modern life can (unfortunately) give at the moment.
freezzertime 3 years ago
@freezzertime Absolute bollocks. Callas was a great actress for sure. But a great singer? No. No. No. Too much wobble in the upper register, and too much throat. She often sounded as if she was gargling mouthwash. Bartoli on the other hand is impressive vocally, and can sing Callas out of another continent, after all there're not many singers with Bartoli's range or passion! I've heard many recordings of Callas, and I find that throaty fault time and again which I find hugely off-putting.

@freezzertime

I liked it.

I'd love to see her do a little more af that flamenco dancing. A book about her says she's actually pretty good at it, so, show it!!

I have to tell the truth. The beginning of this was OK but at the end she made the ugliest face and looked really, really mad. My friend laughed uncontrollably the last 30seconds of this clip. So not sexy. She can sing very well, but she should never play a mad Carmen.
calisouthqueen 3 years ago
she's not palying carmen.... she's singing an aria in a recital...... people can't make any difference.... narrow sights , sorry
peace and love
nicosupersex 3 years ago
I know the difference between a recital and and an actual role in an opera.I am sure you are an advid fan of this lady so your opinion will be tainted. Although the singing was good, my opinion still stands. This is a funny clip.

I love Cecilia, but this excerpt her french pronunciation is very poor. Could not understand a word of what she sang.

At the end,one guy is really exited in the public !!!
tchebinai71 3 years ago 2
Man! Bummer she wouldn't (and probably shouldn't) ever play Carmen.
I'd love to see her in a tragic character (cause she always Rosina, Angelina, you know, the happy bel canto kids).
g4thz 3 years ago
Wow! It feels so alive and spontaneous. I think Callas did the same thing in a different way. It's just amazing how many different styles emerge when artists stumble upon the perfect synthesis of music and drama.

you may say what you want about her facial expressions, but she really is the greatest female opera singer of our times :-)) i love her singing to bits!!
goldengreen73 3 years ago 4
Most of the time, I have been put off by her exaggerated facial expressions....but here they just add to her complete artistry. I Can't wait to see her do Carmen. I think this will be the role of her life and she will be one of the best...sexy, flamenco dancing, crazy gypsy woman.
boomchuckaboom 3 years ago
My god! I was ready to post how she should stick to the baroque, but now I think she would be a nice carmen!

BRAVO BARTOLIIIIIIIIII!!!!
AlejandraDark 3 years ago
You mean Brava! ;)
giuseppeaw 3 years ago 2
Actually "bravo" is an interjection and has no gender. Bravisimo(a) is and adjetive and has, therefore, gender. I second what AlejandraDark said. Bravo Bartoli!
AulendilElessar 3 years ago
In English, yes, it is an interjection. In Italian we decline it, and we say "Brav(issim)a" referred to a woman. Going back to this interpretation, it is not bad, but very average. What's all this whispering about (at the beginning)? Every note, soft or loud, has to be placed, no whispering is allowed in serious singing.
