@fallenspirit123 Awesomeness of linux? this is just beryl wasting half of the precious CPU resources..Sure, it looks cool, but it's practically useless, and NOWHERE close to showing the awesomeness of linux...
I admin a small network some distance from my house, so I was using XP to remote desktop into XP clients on said network. I'm using a nice little app called rdesktop for that purpose now. Vmware server is still pretty awesome though.
Thanks so much for the information! I'm a mac user myself-I only keep a windows box for Guild Wars and Half-Life 2 and many other games. I want to put ubuntu on my mac admittedly but I'm a bit nervous to get my hands dirty so to speak. I'm familiar with both Wine and Gimp as I have been nearly obsessed with the linux community for awhile but it's a good reminder nonetheless. Thanks so much for your time!
Fantastic! I'm really interested in Ubuntu but so far I'm too chicken to actually load it up..I do have a silly question regarding the vmware server though-would it be easy for me to run photoshop cs2 on it without it dragging along?
Sorry about the length of time without a reply. I don't imagine that photoshop would lag the vm up too badly, provided that you have some substantial hardware. I really don't use my vm for any resource intensive tasks, as I have found Linux alternatives for all of my tasks.
The only thing that I really use it for is Remote Desktop. Of course I feel obligated to tell you about The Gimp, which you may or may not know is a native Linux app that provides some of the same functionality as photoshop. Another alternative would be Wine which stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator(recursive acronym). Wine allows you to use some windows apps on linux, but it is in some cases buggy.
I use wine for Counter Strike and Counter Strike: Source and get better frame rates than in Vista. You might also consider setting up a dual boot (if you have the hard drive space to spare) so as to get comfortable with Ubuntu and find Linux apps that suite your needs while all the while reserving the ability to reboot the machine into Windows.
This is how I started my journey into the world of Linux and I'm happy to report that I've become comfortable enough with Ubuntu to delete Vista from my hard drive. I don't know anything about virtualbox so that'll be something to research, but VMWare works fine for me, although it's worth mentioning that my vm is pretty vanilla so I wouldn't be the one to talk to about performance benchmarks. Hope that gets you started.
also hope that you decide to leave the Windows world behind and switch to Linux. It really is great, and provided you have drivers for all of your hardware I think that you're able to get more out of your system. Good luck.
my friend i am thinking on moving to linux, but please tell me are there any problems with skype?.one site said there's bad skype connection on linux.

do you use steam on ubuntu, if you do-do u work it with wine? if you are doing all of them i am so switching to ubuntu ultimate

Yes, I use wine to run steam. The trick is finding the steam installer in ".exe" format rather than ".msi" format.
