I have never seen one of these dogs in Australia but this breed of dog is so wonderful. I would do any thing to have one but I couldn't put a Canadian dog through Australian summers it makes me a little sad though. I have heard these dogs are naturally protective of and patient with young children if socialized correctly is this your experience?

My guy isn't a newfie (supposedly), at all. He's a lab/retriever. but he LOOKS like a newfie! Not in size, but his face , and "hooves" ha ha.. I've always called him my little "Clydesdale", not knowing anything, other than his paws are GIANT, and so is his head! I think he has a grandparent that was a BEAUTIFUL newfie!! Love him no matter!!

@ralphyization They think Newf's and Lab's are both descended from the St. John's Dog. My boy is mostly Rottie & German Shepard with a touch of Australian Shepherd, but... He looks and acts like a Newf! Black, fluffy, lean 127lbs, webbed paws, and the most gentle boy you could imagine.

Our family had a newfoundland named Bear (i know original) but we were little. He used to play football with us in our backyard and we played boys against girls, he would be on the girls team and would line up with us and go after the person with the football....it was a great time and a wonderful memory of our beautiful BEAR!!

Almost certainly. Newfoundlands and Saint Bernards are both very kind breeds so I cannot imagine why they would not get along.

They are just so willing to please that they basically train themselves, just need to put time in and have as part of the family and the training just comes.

About to get a puppy Newfie, and we had a black lab for about 17 years and he died this summer. And I love both breeds, but frankly they are completely different. Trust me, I have been around labs and newfies for a while now, but to each their own.
