Turn the key off? and slow the car with the e brake? there's a reason it's called e brake.. it's for emergencies and if for some reason your fluid front and rear brakes malfunction.. use the ebrake! slowly ease it on.. and coast to a stop.

Turning the ignition off even for less than a second and then turning it back on would reset the Cruise Control back to it's 'off' setting. I suppose it's easier to keep your cool while making scathing comments from a computer than when this is acutally happening.

What an idiot. Just slip it into neutral and hit the brakes. Hell, any teenager who has ever done a brake stand in his mom's car knows the brakes are far more powerful than the engine. Car and driver did a test with an automatic 5.0 Mustang where they kept full throttle and applied the brakes from 100mph. It barely lengthened the stop by about 20' or so. Why oh why do we have to share the road with these fools?

@Freiheitvlc. Actually thats incorrect. My Golf MKV R32 ran at of fuel when driving at 155mph (uses electric power steering) and I was able to coast all the way to zero. If anything electric power steering is safer that fluid power steering as the PAS pump on a fluid system is powered by the Alternator belt. As long as you don't switch the ignition off you're fine.

You CAN just turn the ignition off but you mush be careful not to lock the steering at that speed. On a motorway, 1/2 degrees on the steering can send you off the road

If you're ever caught in a situation like this, shift to neutral. It is a different system, seperate from the cruise control/throttle control, and so not likely to be affected. In fact, every driver should practice putting their car into neutral, as in slippery conditions, that is the third thing you should do (the first two are to take your feet off the pedals and steer into the skid), while you also need to look at where you want the car to go.

This happened right around the corner from my house, he did try everything to stop the car even trying to turn it off to no avail. He was able to slow the car down to 80kms however thats all... When he did this the brake pads were wearing also... So lucky he was able to eventually stop it.

Did he try everything? brakes, hand brake, shift it into neutral, park (shifting into park in my automatic vehicle would ruin the tranny, but stop the car - so would the e-brake)

He did try the foot brake, apparently that jammed, he didn't try the hand brake because at high speed applying it could result in the car flipping, however if u apply the foot brakes and the hand brakes simultaneously, then this should limit the danger of flipping, which he did (as advised by cop) bringing his car to a screeching halt. Several fail-safe mechanisms could've stopped the car, but police said, ALL of them failed, they're looking at the black box now as we speak.
