As for the road at the start. It's probably one-way, that's why it's so narrow.

Though I'm not sure why there was a barrier on only part of the road instead of all the way. A car could easily swerve and fall off it.

Here's what i don't get, if the whole town was their 'special place' surely James would have been so many times that he'd know the way to Silent Hill by heart.

@skittleboy15 I'm quite sure at the very start after Mary reads her letter, James remarks "Our special place? What could she mean? This whole town was our special place..." which is what led me to the belief that if the whole town was special to them, they must have been lots of times before. Though i'm not sure the town would look all that different while it's in the Fog World stage. Of course it's different in the Otherworld, but the Fog World is supposed to more or less mirror the real one.

@RedundancyCoin Ah maybe he does say that and I missed it. However, James's memory is quite selective throughout the whole game as I'm almost positive that by the end of the game he remembers which specific "special place" she means. As far as him not knowing his way around his memory is a factor but also the town itself looks a lot different. I don't think there were giant sheet metal walls cutting off streets and stalled cars and other dead ends all over. It's safe to say it's different.

@liongun123456789 Yes, for me at least. The camera angles are really disorienting and there are lots of hallways with tons of doors, so you need to in order to check which doors you've already opened for example.
