Then the owner ships the dog into space and the dog thinks he'll be back someday to see his owners smile, when truly, his owner just through him into space to die. Its sad irony..

@silversification i can actually agree to this. usually I don't cry over stuff like this ('small animals dying' etc.) but the fact that it was for the Space Race between the Soviets and Americans, it tugs at my heart. Man's best friend getting dragged into the fight to prove international supremacy. It could be any animal, as matter of fact, and it would still be heart breaking when put into the light that this song provided.

From what I know, weren't they going to use another animal instead? I'm not saying it was horrid to send a dog, but I think why people get more emotional over the song is because dogs are so close to humans, hence "mans best friend". They didn't know what was going to happen to the dog, which is why it was regretted when the shuttle and Laika disintegrated. That dog had to be a strong and brave one.

@XxRavePandaxX Actually, Laika was sent to space with full knowledge of her fate. The ship was not equipped with the equipment required for safe atmospheric re-entry. It has been said, I'm not sure if it's true, that some of her rations were poisoned to give Laika a calm, quick death instead of slow asphyxiation or starving when oxygen or food ran out. However, the air conditioning system was damaged shortly after the launch and overheating was the cause of Laika's death.

I've now seen three of these (the Miku/Japanese version of this, and a different Miku version). It's almost more than I can take to hear these songs. They are heartbreaking. I am overcome. I remember some of the space race, and the U.S./Soviet rivalry, and I know it was a desperate time when both men and animals were put to risk and sacrifice for reasons neither could fully fathom. I am amazed at the depth of feeling evoked by this video and its counterpart.

@5gaa5 It was real. Laika is female, FYI. You can look her up on Wikipedia. She was a stray brought in with 2 others to be trained to go into space. She went up, was never met to come down. There is alot of arguing about how she died. Overheating, purposely poisoned food, lack of oxygen are just the three main ones. Soviet Russia launched Spudnik 2 with her on it. Americans and Russians were outraged. There are books about her as well.
