I have a 1962 pressing of the stereo Dorati recording ( on the Phillips label ) and it is mixed differently to the 2007 cd pressing ( Decca ); the bells are reverse-channel and the cannon sound has been 'doctored' and stereo phase-enhanced.
I notice that much many times when old recordings are remastered...Sometimes it works great, other times it flops...Thank you for checking out this vintage track...Friends, Lloyd.
I heard of this record before along time ago, and finally got a copy from a yard sale for 25 cents!!, I was amazed by the dynamic range between the cannon shots and the dialogs from the presenter, and military chants in background!
I vaguely remember reading about the master tapes being made a year prior to the stereo lp, so that sounds correct. I read that many of the master tapes were made in stereo long before the stereo record format came out in 1958.
Ampex made a 3 channel studio recorder in the early to mid 50's in the model 300 series of there recorder line, and the 350 series had full track, and two track recorder model as well in addition to other notable recorder makers at the time.

That may have been the 1958 stereo issue of that record, but I remember seeing that very record jacket in a Mercury catalog in 1957.
